I just wanted to know what MK character(s) is helping keep alive. For me I have to say Scorpion and Sub Zero. These two have always been apart of MK, except for MK3 which was minus Scorpion. So many people I know were very unhappy and disappointed. But then out come Ultimate and Scorpion(along with a few others) is back.
I'm a big Scorpion fan, but I didn't add him for that reason, it just seems obvious. I see alot of post asking whose better Scorpion or Sub Zero. Alot of people are using their names or images for their profiles. But that's just me, what do the rest of you think.

All the hype surrounding it from the 'activist groups'. All that crap about how it was too violent and and should be banned etc. They were telling everyone not to buy / play MK, so what is the natural reaction of people? To go out and play it / buy it! Kids who probably wouldnt have bought the game did, because they wanted to see what all the hype was about. MK woulda been popular, but I don't think it would have reached the heights it did in the mid-90's had it not been for all the buzz surrounding it at the time...

Hmmm, that's a pretty good point too. But I think all the hype is what helped launched the game, but once the shock value wore off, what kept the series going.
The Success was because of:
Digitalized Fighters, Complete different look and feel than Street Fighter, Gore, Fatalitys, Mystic flair, easy but not bad gameplay, Cool Fighters like Scorpion and Sub-Zero.
And simply a different gameplay than Street Fighter.

The downfall was because: MK4, to different look and some weak Character designs in MK3, other Fighting games that were simply better from the gameplay aspect, and in general a bad image like "Only gore no gameplay" wich was not true but many people think like that.

Well, most people had already knew what MK had offered them in previous games, they liked it, so they wanted to see what MK had to offer them in the upcoming games.

The succes in my opinion is because of the fatalities, characters, and overall easy gameplay.

Fatalities and rumors kept it going. Tons of lookie lews played just for fatalities and bunches of people rumored all sorts of crazy stuff about every game.

The gameplay aspect died a long time ago in reality. There is a handful of fans of the gameplay but compared to how many people have considered themselves fans its practically nothing.
