What was the idea behind Blaze in MK2?
I know he wasn't even considered to be Blaze yet, but I always thought that the other guy had done a fatality to the Blaze character, and it included catching him on fire. But does anyone know what the MK team was thinking when putting this character in the pit 2 background?

what about hornbuckle
Hornbuckle was just the name given to the other guy on the bridge with Blaze. It's pretty obvious if you look good enough, that this guy who fans started calling Hornbuckle, looks too much like Liu Kang, to be anyone else.
But my question was simply if anyone knows what the idea behind Blaze was at the time. Was he actually just a warrior who had gotten a fatality done on them? Or was it supposed to be an actual warrior who had flames around his body?

I'm not sure.
After seeing the movie, it reminded me of the Cage vs. Scorpion fight. When Scorpion caught fire, before he exploded.

I was always sure that Liu Kang was simply standing in front of a fire before all that Blaze crap came out

No.
It's just something that the MK team does: They like to screw with us. That is all.

The simple truth.
I will give you all a rare glimpse into the minds of the MK team. This is a portion of a transcript from the design brainstorming session where Blaze was born.
"hey wouldn't it be cool to have this dude on fire in the background"
"yeah, that'd be cool. He could be fighting some other dude"
"yep very cool, let's do it"
"ok"
"but wait do we have the capibility to animate something like that"
"we could reuse Liu Kang's sprite and have them just stand there"
"brilliant!"
and the rest his history.

How the hell did people come up with the name "Hornbuckle" anyway? I always just thought it was Liu Kang in green pants. I mean if I was lured into an Outworld tournament, I know I would want to bring some extra pants.

I did see this in Shaolin Monks. It could be Blaze in the back but it could be be something that Midway put in just to give the game some controversal. Hmmm...........MK: Mythologies............was there a fire element in that game............nah, that game came later..........I think.

They probably just put Blaze in MK2 to make the Pit II background look cool, and to make it really distinct from the Pit 1. Then in later games they gave him a name and retractively wrote a story for him and stuff.
I used to think it would be pretty cool if they took those floating wizards from The Tower and The Portal and made them in to a playable character. But you got to fight a lot of them in Shaolin Monks which was pretty cool.

Actually I think Hornbuckle is actually Liu Kang's brother Chow, from Liu's MK1 bio and the MK comics. His whereabouts have been unknown.

Yep. The reason I say its Liu's bro, is because back then every character looked alike, and were separated by colors (palette swaps).

The idea was just to have it look cool and to be mysterious.
Also, Ed Boon stated in an interview (and looking carefully at the sprites it's now obvious) that BOTH of them are Liu Kang sprites, just one happens to be on fire.
