I played it mildly and thought it was ok. What reasons do most of you members think that made it one of the less popular MK's (from what i have heard).

I remember when I was playing MK4 in the arcade and some kid who was watching said " It's cool but it's still the same thing". The fighting system has been the same until MKDA. That was probably the problem and why the MK team decided to to work feverishly on the Kombat System more than anything else on MKDA. They wanted to give us something new.

Another problem was that every characters combos were the same too. I think a lot of people didn't like that once you master one character, you've pretty much mastered them all.
The roster was another thing that bothered people. Jarek was a rip-off of Kano, Tanya replaced Kitana and Mileena, and Reiko replaced Noob Saibot and had no story.
I personally liked MK4. I thought it was very fast paced and fun, although it was very easy and not the deepest game. And I didn't mind Reiko or Tanya, I thought they were cool.

Yeah MK always had a certain style to it, and the 3D graphics of that game were too primitive to capture that style in any way. And as others pointed out, the characters were a problem. Many people didn't care for MK3's selection of characters, but the reaction to the MK4 roster was probably ten times worse. Add some questionable gameplay into the equation, and you have a game that turns many people off, despite a few of the innovations that it did bring to the table. Working special moves into autocombos was cool (kind of expanded on that MK3 nightwolf combo with the hatchet), and I still think the weapon system was great. MK:DA fleshed out the weapon moves more, but I preferred how it was in MK4, where you could knock a weapon out of someone's hand, then pick it up and use it yourself. A combination of MK4 and MK:DA's weapon systems would be perfect. But anyway, these cool aspects of MK4 were not enough to win the masses over.

Yeah nothing beats the classics.Im still looking forward to mkd but i dont think its possible to bring back the excitement like the old games had its just not the same.
The reason why I didn't like MK4 was because I wanted the combo system to be a little more advanced than UMK3, but everyone had the same combos. That sucked. I didn't mind the graphics, I thought the music was good, and the fatalities were cool, but the gameplay makes the game, and the gameplay sucked.

The graphics were absolutely horrid, and there were a lot better 3-D fighting games to play.. like Tekken, Soul Calibur, and the Virtua Fighter's.

I really liked where they were going with MK4 to start with. The realisticly proportioned character models appealed to me.
But, I also expected them to focus on the gameplay more. The game ended up being almost completely 2D in gameplay. This would have been fine if they had taken 2D gameplay to a new level, but they didn't, it was 2D gameplay that was not on par with MK3.
I disliked it because they didn't do either of the following:
1. They did not make a 2D fighter with 3D graphics that had a more advanced and more well designed gameplay engine then the previous MK games.
2. They did not make a completely 3D fighter with a new and innovative gameplay engine that succeeded in being entertaining and well balanced.
If they had done either of those I would have liked it.

I didn't like MK4 either. It didn't seem as fast as MK3 but they tried to make it like that. The weapons were kind of stupid, and I don't really like Quan Chi at all.

Okay, now unlike everyone else in the MK Universe I enjoyed the game. They DID make the 3d graphics with 2d gameplay and they made the game characters, as far as looks go and moves go, ORIGINAL. Kai for example, was original(someone has to agree with that), not liked, but original. C'mon give this game a chance since it doesnt have Smoke or Ermac!

The game is a giant glorified pallet swap, with even less individuality because everyone can use everyone's weapon if dropped, and everyone has identical combos. There are 3 different models, if you count Tanya's as different because she is smaller, however she still follows one of the *2* individualized move sets. One move set has standing HKs and LKs that turn almost like a half roundhouse, and sweeps inward etc, where the other version is straight and sweeps go outward, or vice versa, it really doesn't matter. There's virtually nothing seperating giant chunks of characters except specials, not even combos.
Examples of individuality for the normals would be something like the difference in priority and easiness of connecting Liu Kang's roundhouse for an anti air in UMK3 vs Sindels, and then even still in the middle you have the male ninjas. Everyone in MK4 has the same jump punch and jump kick, the most different jump punch and jump kick in all the MK games is Baraka's, but then you have ones like Liu Kang's and Kung Lao's, which have a much different collision than anyone else's. In essence, everyone's attacks can be timed to counter anyone else's in any game, but in MK4, it's the exact same timing for everyone, whereas if you're using Sheeva, and you want to anti air roundhouse someone, you would only attempt it if they jump from 3/4 screen distance. Another example is the identical uppercuts. A good example of a shitty uppercut is Kung Lao's in MK3 and even MK2 Kung Lao's in Trilogy. They have the smallest collision box for any uppercut, even smaller than the robot ninjas, while Sub-zero has some extra height, Jax has extra range, and Sheeva is way out there, like her roundhouse.
Aside from all the ridiculously boring attacks, the graphics are a piece of fat Hell. I was entirely unimpressed with the graphics, but not the look. The look was definitely decent, but that doesn't make the game. I don't think I've done more than 5 fatalities in the game because I simply do not care about fatalities enough. The only time I use them really is when I'm playing against a person who likes seeing them, otherwise I generally do something neat. The sound effects were pretty cool, definitely MK in style, but they did start getting a little silly with them, even by MK standards. Raiden's superman it almost sounds like he yells "Alakazam!"
They added one interesting thing to the gameplay, and that was the jump kick that floors the person instead of making them fly back a bit. Other than that, the sidestepping is virtually worthless. It's also extremely easy to anti air HP someone out of an air attack, and you can throw knees in to cancel jabs instantly, and there's no push back. The game just seemed incomplete at best. There are a lot of weak characters as well. A lot of people don't like Nightwolf and Stryker, but they are seriously deadly characters. Jarek and Kai are the drizzling shits. I don't know what they were thinking. I also don't know what they were thinking when the implimented Maximum Damage. Another example of incompleteness. Tanya runs rampant in the game because she's smaller than everyone else, and has really broken fast moves. Imagine if they made characters with big damage chain combos, and not like a maximum of 25%. This way you catch the little bitch with one combo and she has to change her strategy. Someone like Sheeva, Kung Lao, or Jax, who can deliver 40% - 50% with one ground combo is something that a character like her would fear, but there's nothing to fear, because the game isn't worth a minute of anyone's time.
MK4 is a joke.

I didn't like MK4 because of the chunky graphics, but when they released MK Gold on the Dreamcast with its far better graphics I realised that it was a good game just let down by the graphics.

I did like MK4 because it was a game that any average MK fan could play without being beaten in 5 seconds by the opposition.
A lot of moves were cool(for example Quan Chi weapon stealer), the music was great and the FMV endings were well done.
I have appreciated MK4 as much as MK3, maybe even more.
