I dont have scans of this, but anyone in Ireland or the UK can also confirm this. In their latest issue, Nov 08, they run a preview of the near complete version of MK vs DC Universe. Firstly they comment on how vicous the jokers gun fatality is, so i assume they have their copy before Midway had to tone it down.
They said that in an age of such precision fighting like soul calibur, tekken, virtua fighter, there is really no excuse for this game. They say its clunky, unresponsive. Its also the most unfairly balanced fighting game they have ever played. They say that its just bland button bashing with no pay off.
It gets so bad that they run out of things to bash the title with so they instead find it funny to quote lines from "Dude!, wheres my car?! (what does my tattoo say etc).
They finish by saying that they have absolutely no hopes for this title after playing it, and that the crossover could be the biggest mistake in MK history bar Special Forces.
Now while everyone certainly isnt a mortal kombat fan, it should be noted that they rated Ultimate MK 9.1 on live. Gave Deception 8.8 . Cant find what they gave DA or Armageddon. But its certainly not a good sign. These arent a silly flash in the pan website, 360 is the highest selling unoffical mag in the UK.

The reality seems to be that it's slightly better. Yes, having stringed combos and a replenishable breaker does make it less broken, but that doesn't stop it being a clunky mess. A lot of moves I can see are directly ripped from MKDA/MKD/MKA.
Don't any of you tell me I should wait to play it. It's quite clear it's a mess from just seeing the gameplay in action, and a scathing review only lends credence to what I suspect.
If you want proper impressions, ask people on forums who have actually played the game.

You have to wonder why the last gen MK's got such good reviews when they were really awful to play though. What does this say, if an MK game with significantly improved gameplay gets such a terrible review? Plus. if they're saying it's clunky and stiff and I can see it's clunky and stiff...
I trust my own opinion, and I'm not happy with it so far. You can't know from just a review, but if ten games mags come out and say it's abominable I'd err stronger towards the side that says it's bad. My expectations would rightly be lowered, and the MK team have a track record for that.
If I turn out to be right, some of you are going to be disappointed after such optimism. I really, really, really, hope I and this magazine are wrong though.

Nintendo is comprised of three Japanese words. Nin, Ten, Dou, and when combined it means we kicked the holy shit outta Atari.
Exactly. In this day and age of the Tekken and Soul calibur fans, if it doesn't play like either title, the reviewer will rate it low. The MK Team has already stated that this game has gone back to a 2D style of game play. The Soul Calibur and Tekken fan will easily scoff at the idea. These same reviewers will no doubt give Street Fighter IV a bad review because it too is a 2D based fighter. I for one am not a huge fan of the Soul Calibur or Tekken series. I perfer the more streamlined 2D fighters to be honest, though I will play the 3D games.

You have to admit that this is still confusing. I've read through that thread on Shoryuken.com and on one hand I'm seeing a few people saying it's very very good (and converting a few naysayers in the process) while on the other hand we've got people saying it's terrible. They both can't be right and it's pretty uncommon for a game to be lauded on one hand and slammed on the other. You might have one or two rogue reviewers but in general there's usually a "consensus."

I hear what you're saying. To me, from what I've experienced and read on the Street Fighter IV threads at SRK, some reviewers said the same thing. Once the majority of the players got first hand experience on the game, the general concensus was that the game was very good, although it felt clunky at first.
Now, I hear nothing but good things about the game and I have seen plenty of gameplay vids that say SFIV is a great game. I see the same thing happening with this new MKvsDC. Sure, you can't please everyone, but I certainly am pleased that the old combo system is gone, replaced by a free combo system.
The second thing I'm happy about is the fact that special moves are no longer just stand alone moves and can now be included as part of a combo chain like DarkStalkers. The pro moves just add a bit more depth to the game, requiring a bit more skill and timing to pull off. These changes to the core engine will separate the men from the boys online and at future tournaments. Yes, there is a tournament sheduled for early next year for this game. The guy who's writing the guidehas already mentioned where it will be held on SRK.
Honestly, MKD and MKA got 8's and 9's because of the sheer amount of content that they had. Cetainly, it was not the fighting engine that deserved those scores. This game has shifted it's focus to apeal to the hardcore and the casual gamer, meaning no mini-game gimicks to entice customers.
If you feel that you can trust these reviewers, that's your decision. You're entitled to that. I for one will form my own opinion once I play it. If the recent videos are any indication, I'd say that I'm going to enjoy the hell out of this game.
Peace
Don't listen to magazine reviews, you never know what kind of fanboy is hiding behind them. I'm sure they called it unresponsive cause they were trying out soul calibur combos.

Agreed. They're the FIRST bad review. Not to be trusted in my opinion.

I don't know. Having a lot of good previews/reviews doesn't necessarily mean that it is indeed good. Spider-Man Web of Shadows came out recently and it got practically everywhere a good score. Then IGN reviewed it and smashed it with a score of 5.5.
Then I got to play it and boy were they right with many of the things they had to say.

anywho, button masher...ya i dont think so, and if you do lets play and we'll see where that button mashin gets ya
which is sad but i don't base wether i buy a game or not or how much i enjoy it based off of another persons review. really i just read those to know some what what to expect from the game so i won't be throwing my controller around in shocking dissapointment.

When some wild-eyed, eight-foot-tall maniac grabs your neck, taps the back of your favorite head up against the barroom wall, and he looks you crooked in the eye and he asks you if ya paid your dues, you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye, and you remember what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like that: "Have ya paid your dues, Jack?" "Yes sir, the check is in the mail."

Jack Burton was kind of wondering whether or not the reviewer got accustomed to the new system. If this reviewer gave MKDA, MKD, and possibly MKA good reviews, it could have been because they were used to that fighting system, but perhaps this new one for MK vs. DC is just too different for them...could be a viable theory on my part...
And THAT'S what Jack Burton has to say at this time.

the review fails at "gave Deception 8.8," I'm sorry this game looks worlds better than that flaming turd

Maybe this game will just be like the previous 3D MKs. Where more casual players will pick it up and enjoy the game for what it is and more "hardcore" players will slam it for being a fuck up. Time will tell.
But this time we can punch Superman in the face. And it isn't Create a Fighter. Awesome.

One of two things is happening. Either the people slamming the game are finding it too different and thus had trouble learning to play and so are feeling that they just can't do anything. Or people who are praising the game are so enamored by a few bells and whistles they're being blinded and can't see that there are major problems. I am sincerely hoping for the former.
Silent Hill: Homecoming got a scathing review from IGN, while I think it is a perfectly fine installment in the franchise. Meanwhile, I think Metal Gear Solid 4 really does not deserve the perfect 10 they awarded it.
That being said, I'll wait for a general consensus. If the majority agree it's a shot product, I'll hold back. If it gets universal praise, I'll reconsider giving it just a rental. If it gets mixed reviews, like I expect, I'll borrow a copy and give it a run through myself.
