Deception's gameplay = BULLSHIT (universal combo breakers? Juggling? Its DA 2.0!)
Taken straight from the GamePro article:
Deadly Alliance already featured a solid 3D fighting engine, and Deception retains the core elements while adding some key techniques. "One of the comments that we got from the last game was that the role of combos is kinda high," says Boon. "So we added ways to break or get out of combos." When fighting on the ground, you can knock an attacker away in the middle of a combo by simultaneously pressing into them and pressing the block button.
Wait wait FUCKING WAIT! Deadly Alliance featured a HALF-ASSED fighting engine, not a solid one. So Deception has taken an already sucky fighting engine and adds more sucky features? Wow! I'm impressed!
That is BULLSHIT. Dial-a-combos + universal breakers = TOTAL SHIT. Wow, long matches of NOTHING. Its an endless cycle of crap! Pu-BREAK-Pun-BREAK! Do you people learn anything?!
The jury's out on countering air juggles, though. "We're still toying with the idea of making juggles uncounterable," says Boon, "as our juggles are more elaborate here than they were in Deadly Alliance.
Mr. Boon, your juggle system in Deadly Alliance was shit too. The opponent FLOPPED after three hits. That SHOULDN'T happen. Juggles shouldn't even be counterable!
Fucking A! I am so pissed about this. This game truly IS Deadly Alliance 2.0. God-fucking-DAMNIT! *waits in corner for Tekken 5*
EDIT: Here's something else in the article:
"We didn't have to spend as much time building a fighting engine -- we enhanced it, but we spent a majority of our time on content this time."
*grumbles*

Ew, the last thing we need is Deadly Alliance 2.0. Well, hopefully other features in the game will be enough to balance it out if they botch it up with this.

You didn't like MK DA, so why were you awaiting or even interested in Deception, since it was crystal clear since the beginning that it would be based on the DA engine, with just additions and improvements.
It's like hating chocolate cake, but wanting to buy or showing interest in a chocolate cake with frosting and sprinkles and expecting it to be different, it's still chocolate cake.

Correction: Its like hating chocolate cake, and wanting chocolate CARROT cake. Turns out, its still the same chocolate cake with sprinkles now.

well...despite the fact that i myself have no real problem with the D.A. engine or combo system which i believe to be inventive yet still very much in it's infancy...the combo/juggle system was alright...it sucked that you couldn't juggle someone more than 3 times...but...we can't always have what we want...
bottom line...while unversal combo breakers isn't probubly the most welcome piece of news i've heard...it does in fact add an element of realism to it....i mean honestly...is anyone in the real world gonna stand there and let someone beat the shit out of em with a devastating combo and not do anything...hell no!!!... you're gonna try to block, counter..anything...and before anyone goes "it's m.k. anything is possible even standing there and getting beat up"...while i do agree that it's m.k. and anything is in fact possible..the fighting is very much grounded in reality...fighting styles, weapons, blocking, countering....to me the fighting is gonna be awesome...but that's just to me i guess

Well, it was pretty much obvious that if you didnt like MKDA, you wouldnt like MKD.
The gameplay may have been tweaked a LITTLE, but overall, there was no clear improvement...
I think they said "we want to make Mortal Kombat much more than just a fighting game". That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. So they want to back up the disappointing gameplay with extra modes? Meh.
It's supposed to BE a fighting game! Why waste energy, time and money on, like you said, the icing of the actual cake, if the cake itself isnt good? They really should have concentrated more on the fighting engine, since it's going to be playable online!
I wouldnt have cared if they didnt add any of the extra modes, characters, stages or fatalities... if only they made the fighting satisfying.

What I don't understand is how you can hate the previous game but actually care to check out the next game...

very true wanderer...but did the core fighting engine change? ? ?...no...high punch, low punch, high kick, low kick....it was all the same through mortal kombat 4...then it changes and you complain???....
Actually, yes. MK3 did change the core engine. It introduced the Run button and Dial-a-combos. I knew Deception would have the DA engine, but I was hoping that Midway would look at what needs to be done in order to improve it. A universal breaker system is terrible. Look at Killer Instinct, it knew how to use dial-a-combos PERFECTLY.

In regards to the universal combo breakers, the way he describes them makes it sound very very similiar to counters in DOA, in which case I think they would be fine. (even in DOA you still had to master the timing) Character specific combo breakers would be a little too much, if they did indeed take out a good amount of the emphasis on the combos, which it would seem they did with all the special moves that the characters are suppossed to have. You should DEFINITELY not be able to break a juggle comobo, that would be fairly retarded I agree. There should be a cap on the amount of times you can juggle, not necessarily set to 3 constantly however. In regards to dial-a-combo's I honestly dont mind them much, as my fighting game history leans more towards killer instinct and mk I've for the most part grown comfortable with them, but if your an SF, Tekken or VF guy I can see how this would probably be very frustrating. My main gripe about mk:da was the fact that many if not most of the moves were fairly useless and you mainly relied on a few key moves, combos and special moves, which i hope has been corrected. This is probably shitty news indeed for some mk fans while it really affect others, I'm personally still looking forward to the game. Good thread though, this is actual productive conversation, im going to shoot myself if theres another Rain thread, its why i havent posted much!

True, especially in KI2, I realllllllly wish they would use that system in MK.

I don't care about "dial" combos.. as they are present in every fighting game..
But all we have to do to break a combo is "F, BLK"?
Completely rediculous.

I think he's talking about a DOA style counter personally. for instance if its a direct punch, then you have to hit forward and block on a timed basis when the punch would hit you. If its a low hit, probably down and block at the moment the move would strike you. I really doubt that when someone starts a combo on you that you can just jam on forward and block to break out of it. Although im sure the computer players will be a bitch with counters on the higher difficulties.

I knew this was going to be a problem Boon cares more about the mini games then the fighting.WTF i truly feel this is the last chance for mk to redeem its self after mk4 and mkda both slow and boring mkda was better then 4 but still had alot of problems.I really hope theres a option to turn off combos breakers i mean its so fun learning new combos over 50 percent damage ect.The only thing change about the gameplay is the combo breakers iv said this in the past too.And it appears im right. If this game bombs mk is dead.

You know, I was REALLY starting to believe Deception could be a real improvement over DA in the gameplay department. Now I read this... I honestly feel like somebody just sucker punched me.
Thank you sir, may I have another?

I think you've been wanting to display your disgust for this subject for a while now wanderer
I was hoping some game of good improvements would be made to the current engine
I cannot stress enough how I hate the juggle system.
On DA's you did a pop up move and you had to do 2 move pop-up moves just to keep them aloft and then they fall whether you like it or not.
I was playing on Tekken 4 earlier and I did a pop-up move, then I started a 10-hit string while they were still airbourne .... 7 HITS while they were airbourne, not 7 pop-up moves, 7 of your average move linked into a string.
Now I'm not asking for gameplay at Tekken's standard but come on, surely some kind of good improvements.
Looks like I'll be geting Deception for the sake of being a fan, because I've no other reason to get it

Pathetic. THE FIGHTING ENGINE WAS TRASH IN MKDA! But can you blame them when 99% of the MK fans are scrubs and cry about fatalities and secrets? I remember a poll on here asking what the MK team should focus on more for MK6: fatalities, secrets, or gameplay. Fatalities won the poll with ease while gameplay got the least amount of votes. Face it old school MK fans, MK isn't a fighting game anymore. Time to move on. It's time to usher in the new era of scrubs who don't play fighting games to be the new staple of MK fans. It's already apparent that's who the majority of MK fans are.
As for combo breakers, LOL! There's just no hope for MK as a fighting series anymore. It's already on thin ice in the fighting game community with UMK3 being it's ice. MKD will surely bury the series completely.
"MKDA was their first real 3D fighter! That's why there's complaints. But MKD will fix them and put MK back on top of the fighting game world! What? You think they haven't been working on the fighting engine in the last 2 years?" - What's been said for the last 2 years.
R.I.P MK

My God.
I'm far to livid to even show it right now. You know with this cheap combo breaker that probably took no longer than 5 minutes to think of that the timing will be totally putrid too. So who knows what kind of broken crap can be done.
