I mean don't get me wrong, I like character development but this is a martial arts fighting game and all I see are people posting a lot of nonsense about inane storylines. Hardly anyone is talking about the game itself. Does anyone actually care how Mokap fathered Blaze's children if the actual game we are given is not up to snuff? You can't just call it Mortal Kombat, throw in a bunch of ludicrous fatalities and blood, a couple of ninjas and scantily clad babes and expect it to ride soley on those things. Deadly Alliance was enjoyable but did not quite meet the standards of a modern top tier fighter. The production was overall quite good, but the meat of the game was a little slim. I look forward to a top quality product with Deception, as there has always been a place in my heart for Mortal Kombat, despite such lackluster offerings as MK4. I know that the father of modern fighting games is poised to reclaim a place at the top of the fighting game genre, along with other quality fighters like VF4, Soul Calibur 2 and DOA3; I just hope Boon's team made more improvements to the core fighting system over silly things like more blood or over the top fatalities that aren't really that good (you know what I mean Quan Chi).

Yes the story is important to those of us who truly consider ourselves Mortal Kombat fans. If you're just a fighter fan you don't have to care for the story but leave it for those of us who it does matter to.

No need for hostility, I was only trying to get some discussion going about a GAME. For you to infer that I am not a true Mortal Kombat fan is offensive to me. It was pretty much the first game of its kind that I really liked. Yes, I am generally into fighting games but MK was the first really good one. I do care about the story development, but I also care about the actual game that we will be playing, afterall, you cannot play the story now can you?
The fighting it self is what I care about the most.

The story is not too important to me.

But I still like to have it anyway just to give the game some life.

actually yes it is important, and should be mortal kombat wouldn't be so kick ass if it didn't have a story i mean yea the fighting and fatalities have alot to do with the success of the game but if they took the story away it wouldn't be half is good

Still, MK would be nothing without "FINSH HIM". It would not even exist without those words. It would have been the crappiest fighting game of all time. Good story and all.

Gameplay is deffintly important to me, but I believe why most of us "MK nuts" care so much about the story is because, this story is one of the major elements that set's itself apart from many other if not nearly all fighters out there.

Trust me, myself along with many other members on this board care very much about fighting, but MK has brought such a compelling story with it, it fits in hand and hand. Obviously I think what we all want is a game with oustanding gameplay, grusome fatalites, cool secrets, and of course compelling storylines. I believe in MK6 we will get this very wish.

It's what's great about MK, people can like the game for different reasons.

The gameplay is extremely important but the story is just as important to me because:

1- I'm a die-hard fan
2- The story determines which characters can and will return.
3- The elaborate story of MK sets it apart from most if not all fighters.

Gameplay was the most important part at one time. At least for me. But now I just love the character designs. And because I love the characters, I love their stories as well. Just the way it works for me.

Gameplay is the most important aspect, but the storyline is a staple for a good MK game. So many fighters have lame storylines, but MK always seems to have thorough character backgrounds and a strong main plot. Gameplay is the #1 factor in a fighting game, but MK is not MK without an envolving story..........

The story is part of what makes Mortal Kombat so great. Why else would there be movies, TV series, cartoon series, comics, and books made about it? Without the story it's just like any other fighting game out there. Please note, I said the story is only part not the only reason Mortal Kombat is great. Gameplay is important as well. As for the gore/violence...it wouldn't be Mortal Kombat without it. Its a combination of these things that makes the series so great. Would we be here making theories as to who the girl in Raiden's clothes is if the story didn't interest us? Would the story even interest us if the gameplay was crappy? Mortal Kombat has brought to us some of the most unique characters seen in any game, fighting or otherwise.

How many other games can you actually be a Thunder God who just can't seem get along with his Elders or next-realm neighbors. Or a ninja that just can't stay dead. How about an actor that can't seem to get his act together or a army lady who kicks butt? Better yet they're all in one game!

Alot of fighting games rely on Storie and gameplay.

Tekken

King of Fighters

Soul Calibur

and others.......

For me a fighting game with no storie isnt very good. I couldnt get into Virtua Fighter 4 because of the lack of storie for the characters.

And a storie gives reason for the things that happen. Imagine MKDA without backstories for the characters. There will be too many questions.

Why does Scorpion hate Quan Chi?

Why is Sub-Zero old?

Wheres Liu Kang?

Why is Reptile more of Lizard than in past games?

Mortal Kombat needs its storie.

How many of these other games have been able to keep the story going for as long as Mortal Kombat. Think about it, how many other fighting games have been around for 12 years and keep such a popularity! True many fighting games have a story, but how many actual keeps us guessing as to what is coming up next in the story of the next game? I will admit, I haven't played many of the games you listed but mainly due to the fact that I just don't have the time and must choose what games to play. I kept with Mortal Kombat because of story.

Mortal kombat a lot. If the game had no story it would just suck. Gameplay is definetly important, but the story makes it much more interesting.

The gameplay is important. but to me, the story is one of the most important aspects of MK. I dont like a game where your introduced to a whole bunch of characters and you dont know diddly fiddly widdly squiddly about them.

MK's characters have story, and have good development.
