MK: Deception Wins Best Fighting Game at Spike TV Video Game Awards!

Unexpected, No?

Tonight Snoop Dogg hosted the Spike TV Video Game Awards in Los Angeles, where Mortal Kombat: Deception beat out the competition and took home the award for best fighting game! Beating out such games like Dead or Alive: Ultimate and Def Jam: Fight for NY, this is a very prestigious accomplishment for Ed Boon, John Podlasek, and the rest of the Mortal Kombat development team. After following the development of this title since May, none of us had any doubt MK: Deception would come through victorious! Unlike other genres, SpikeTV did not formally present the award for best fighting game. Instead, on air was a short clip announcing Mortal Kombat: Deception as the winner for the best fighting game category. Shown below are a few clips from the segment:

...Thats really getting old now. That was in back when we were getting our first glimpses of MK:D.

Anywho, that is great news. Congrats to everyone that worked on it, they deserve it more than anyone else IMO. Maybe this will rejuvinate competition online.

this isnt a big deal. any real gamer knows that the awards from the VGA's show is crap. not even real gamers make the show. its totally mainstream.

any ways i think MKD should be fighting game of the year for sure but getting that award from VGA doesnt mean a thing. and it beating out DOAU is no surprise. that game is mediocre at best.

basically the awards given at the VGA show dont actually count. its jsut so mainstream its stupid.

I knew it was going to win... I dont think this game deserves to be the game of the year, and if it was released last year it probably would have lost.

They don't take it seriously, it's just pr for big name celebs. Also Gamespot apparently won best fan site, and they were sponsoring the show.

Well the competition it had wasn't exactly great. I don't think any of the games in the category were all that good. I havent played a DOA in quite awhile but the last time I did it was nothing more than a pretty fighter with a simplistic rock/paper/scissors fighting system. Sadly now boon might think that deception was good and won't bother to try to make the next game have superior gameplay.

An american game wins an award over other games from non-american countries in an american awards show, did see that coming...

How was that decided?

Voting? I guess that was for the american public

or was it a bunch of mainstream judges who don't actually know that much about fighting games.

I know Dead or Alive is one of the more crappier beat-em up series but with competition like that it should've easily won, o well.

It was to the public – not just the American public, but the world. And honestly, MKD was the best fighting game of the year, like someone said it was no contest (because all the other ones sucked). But talking trash about the American people will do little to change this.

*sigh* Deception won "Best Fighting Game?" ...I don't know if I should laugh or cry at that sentence, honestly. Maybe I'm still bitter about how dissappointed I was In Deception, but I don't think that game should be considered the best at anything except being the best trade-in game of 2004.

It is a great and fun game. No one can deny that. MKD obviously lacks depth in the gameplay department. But due to it's target audience being the general public. Who would like this game more than say DOA because of it's gimmics and fun factor. It won and it deserved this award.

Whyw as mkd the best trade in of the year?? Seriously mkd was always going to win. Doau is not really a good game. It has always been more bout the females.. the rest simply didnt stand a chance. Let me jsut say that even with its flaws, mkd was a damn fun game, and it deserves the award, with or without the naysayers.. Good work guys but shaolin monks had better live up to its potential and mk7 had better have a better engine. but for now i will wallow in the victory.

1) whether it's the german public, french public, british pubic, american public or any other country - public = mainstrean rubbish

2) I dare you to say MK:D is a better game and fighting game than Street Fighter Anniversary Collection.

3) The point of the post was to point out the biasedness of awards shows towards their own countries games, eg. Def Jam and MK being nominated before SF:AC, it wasn't about hating the America, you can put "insert country X" instead of america for all i care, because other countries will do the same, they're all mainstream.

One last time, the point was about mainstreamness, not america as a country, america just happened to be the country responsible in this case.

With that said you'll hopefully drop the patriotism act now, it's not needed.

I don't think the street fighter Anniversary edition should win because it's not even a 2004 game, it's just old games being sold again. The only difference was the street fighter 2 game, that you can choose your play style. That's not enough still.

Best overall fighting game of 2004 would be MKD because of all the extra stuff. It makes up for the ton of mistakes it has to the general public.

Best fighter IMO would be DOAU. Maybe guilty gear X2 but I always play DOAU instead.
