Agreed.

Liu Kang as an icon is debatable. but is he more an icon than Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Kitana, or Raiden? My ass.
The key thing here is what would/does Liu Kang represent as an icon of Mortal Kombat? As Bezou pointed out: "a cheesey homage to old kung fu movies" with some elements of Star Wars thrown in. That's what Mortal Kombat originally was when it was first concieved.
There's nothing wrong with basing something on old ideas and archetypes. However, what creators are then supposed to do is expand those ideas and concepts and make them their own. This is why many fans, myself included, regard characters like Sub-Zero, Kitana, Raiden, and some others as greater icons of MK than Liu Kang.
Sub-Zero started out as a ninja stereotype who shot ice. Since then, he's grown into one of MK's most developed characters with one of the best storylines. He's now more than merely some "ninja who shoots ice," he's a worth-while and distinct character wothy, in my opinion, of being considered a "face" of Mortal Kombat.
Yeah, Raiden was clearly taken from the lightning guy from Big Trouble in Little China...but the MK team made him their own. I would make the same case with Kitana, Reptile, and...before they turned him into a marketing tool...Scorpion.
Liu Kang, on the other hand, remains what he was when he was first created: the archetypical "pure chosen hero" based on Bruce Lee.
Liu Kang as an icon represents what Mortal Kombat was: a homage to kung fu movies & Star Wars...with him as the Luke Skywalker, Johnny Cage as the Han Solo, and Sonya Blade as the Princess Leia. Personally, I've outgrown that. I outgrew that back in MK2. Just one of the reasons I was never satisfied with the Mortal Kombat movie.
I want Mortal Kombat to be Mortal Kombat. Something that started as a simple and basic idea and grew into something...I won't say original or unique...but something worth-while and memorable.
With that said, I wouldn't be surprised if Liu Kang was in MK vs. DC...if not due so much to his iconic value, but due to his role as the pure, noble, main hero. As said, he is more-or-less what Superman is to DC. The guy who saves the day in the end. And with that in mind, I wouldn't be surprised if Liu appears in his normal living form and not a zombie. Further, I wouln't be surprised if Raiden returns in his "light" form.
More reason why I'm hoping the story to this game is non-canon.

The only time I ever started liking Lui Kang was when I saw the movie.
Before that he was just the character who made funny noises that it made me laugh so hard I fell to the flore,
but when I watch the movie it usualy helps me regain my respect for the actual character of Lui and over look his turkey gobbles. Aside from me liking Lui Kang I do think he will be in this game and I hope they bring him back to life because the Zombie thing is getting old. They have had two chances to bring him back to life now. One was missed because they kind of ignored everything that happend in Decpetion due to time and them not wanting to make new character modles for Armageddon (or that is how I see it) so with them doing that I gues it canceld out Lui's ending, because they did not want to take the time to come up with another outfit for him ,so they just slapped him with the Zombie one again and gave him the living form as his alternate again. Now we come to opportunity two where they can bring him back to life and possibly have him ascend to god status and perhaps be battling Raiden, but then again....we're not sure how canon this game is yet......and neither is Boon .......hmmm.

Maybe the game is non-canon. More like a what-if story because the game doesn't make since. I mean which DC character would be parallel to Liu Kang?

The game wouldn't be cannon, otherwise there might be more sequels to the crossover series and I know how much people would hate if the game after this one is a crossover as well.
I though do not wish to have Liu Kang return at all. It was pathetic to bring him back to life in Deception after they killed him. But yet, we all know that every MK character doesn't really die in its universe. But if Liu does somehow make a re-appearance in this game, I too hope that Liu doesn't return at a lame-looking zombie. They could have done better designing him...
(I wanted to use the chains wrapped around his wrists at a weapon, not a lame sword that makes no sense to have if he has chains with hooks on them to use instead.)

Considering that there isn't a legion or even a relatively large amount of people defending the need for Liu's return, I'd say Kung Lao is a better choice. He may not be as iconic, but his own level of iconic status mixed with his number of fans is reason enough to pick him over Kang.
The "iconic" standard is a reasonable one, but there's no reason to be dogmatic about it.

I want to see Zombie Liu...in a burning pit of Hell never to return to future MK games. God I hate Zombie Liu.

Agreed. Wouldn't mind seeing Ghost Liu, though. I mean, he was ACTUALLY Liu Kang, and not mindless walking flesh.

He'd be a ghost how the hell could you hit him? XD then again it is MK so you never know.

I can't deny he's iconic, but I'd really wish they'd pass the torch. They almost did it in MKDA, but still fucked that one up nicely with MKD. Liu Kang is a boring character, keep him dead.

you know since Scorpion became the champion of the Elder Gods, wouldn't he start to be the main hero?

If you teamed up with Hillary, it'd be a dream ticket.
At this point I think they'd be absolute morons not to try to sync this up with the forward direction of the series, so in that respect, I say leave Liu Kang resting in peace. If we have to have him though, I say buck the trend, and keep consistent with the zombie situation.
There might be a contingency of fan who doesn't want the game to be "canon," but let's face it. They don't really lose out by an isolated game having connections to the surrounding instalments.
Kung Lao all the way for the vanilla hero, though.
I think a lot of people are at least familiar with the hat guy, and it's a great opportunity to finally commit to that step forward.
I was Kung Lao in a parade in '95 and a little kid had a photo with me during one of the parade stops. THEREFORE -- kids love Kung Lao! It's science.

I was against the whole thing from the start. He was killed off in DA and should have stayed that way! I don't hate Kang but if there's a character whose story has really gotten stale it's him. MK1-MK4 Same old thing over and over and would you look at what midway did to "improve" it. He became a zombie for no reason at all and lost the little importance as a character he had left. Lets take a look at his role in Deception shall we. HE HAD NONE! He was just there! For no reason at all. By the time we reached MKA he had become just another hidious result of another of Boon's "great" ideas.
I am seriously afraid to see what they are gonna think of to screw him over in MK VS DC.
-conclusion-
NO MORE #%$@!*^ ZOMBIE KANG!

Well, that would have been logical, but in the Konquest mode of MKA, it turns out that Scorpion sought retribution against the Elder deities for reviving his clan half-way into zombies instead of a full revival he had bargained for.
But I'm glad. I think Scorpion needed something new and original to keep his story fresh, like another revenge quest.

i don't see why we can't have a primary outfit where Liu is alive and a secondary attire where he is in his zombie form.we can have both.
