1st of all, no, I don't think they'll ever make a Mortal Kombat Trilogy 2, because trilogy would indicate a grouping of 3, and as we currently have 6 Mortal Kombats, that title would make very little sense. :P
In any event though, If they made a game on the PS3 with all the characters using Deadly Alliance/Deception style graphics, I'd have a heart attack and die of excitement. My day, would be friggin' made. Seriously.
Mortal Kombat being my favorite game series throughout my life, I nearly died of excitement when Trilogy came out. It's lost some of its thunder since then since the newer games have added new characters, obviously, but I still love that game.
So, though I would love it if they did that, I find it very very unlikely that they will.
Trilogy was an easy game to make in that it didn't really take much work. All they added were the Male Ninjas, The Female Ninjas, Baraka, Cage, Raiden, Kintaro, & Goro. Now an even smaller percentage of those characters that they added actually had new models. Raiden, Baraka, Kintaro & Goro were all just direct graphical imports from the older games. And though the ninjas made up about 12 different characters so they seemed like alot of work, consider the fact that after pallette swapping, the most the new artwork would have taken was 3 sessions in an image capture studio. 1 each for Cage, The Female Ninjas, & The Male Ninjas. After that it was just a simple matter of importing some player graphics and old backgrounds. Programming some new moves, and they were good to go. Not an easy task true, but a hell of a lot more easy then building a whole game from the ground up.
Now, if they tried the same thing in the 3D context of the newer games, it twould not be so easy. Adding new characters to the old game was easy. A few days of Cosplaying and some cameras and they were good to go. But now, to graphically meet peoples expectations, they'd have to draw brand new 3D models for every character not yet featured in one of those previous games. Now if ma' math is correct, that's 16 characters. (17 if you don't count pallette swapped Sektor from tournament edition) 16 characters that would have to be drawn, animated, and all around made from the ground up, to the same quality that the previous characters were made, not just some rough "Konquest" models. 3 of which are our massive buddies Motaro, Kintaro, & Goro. And this time pallette swaps aren't an option. Not an impossible task, true, but speaking as a graphic artist myself, (which I forgot to mention) still a tough one.
Now don't get me wrong, I believe that with some work, of course this is is posssible, but I think that its still more work then Midway would want to put into a generic compilation game whose purpose is mostly to cater to fanboys, rather then drive the series forward with things like new characters and a forward moving story. They want to build on the franchise, not backtrack. Now you're saying, but they did it with Trilogy, but as I already explained, Trilogy was a much easier task, comparitively.
So, in conclusion, though I more then anyone hope I'm wrong, I don't see it happening. I'd love it if it did, but I don't think it will.
EDIT: Damn! Did I type all that? Time flies when your hacking away at these things. Sorry... hehe... didn't feel the length as I went along.

Maybe instead of alternate costumes, they should have alternate characters. I htink what we all want is to be able to play as EVERY single character in 3-D and with the new engine, MK4 was pathetic, can't call THAT real 3-D, right?

That would be cool, but then again, we'd have to be damn sure that the only costumes that some people have are winners. Possibley the main MK site can have a poll of people's favorite costumes and put that one in. For all we know, it could be 7 or 8 pallete swaps still.

Mk was rumored to be dead back in 96,then poof.....mk4 arrived in the arcades w/ virtually nobody even knowing about it.
after the failure of mk4,did any of us think we would see an MK prt 5?
not only did we get part 5,but we got the craptacular Jax game on the ps1 along w/ it
Boon wants to milk this franchise for all it's worth, that's why he made trilogy half assed and not even containing many of the most popular fatalities...the money got to his head
w/ Mk5 he wanted to start over again, but slowly.
the ps3 will be powerful enough, and have enough memory to be able to handle an "mk trilogy 2".....it would most likely be called something like Mortal Kombat Legends though, which would be perfect for a name in my opinion
There's no need to have a compilation version of mk with 50+ characters, and it's really stupid to do this and make another half assed compilation mk game.I'd be just fine w/ a combination of all the mk's so far,but w/ only 35-40 characters at the most
I don't need another mk compilation though,I'd prefer the mk team to continue focusing on one full game at a time w/ a fresh approach and inventive features!

It would be the sweetest MK game ever if they actually made it with every single character every made or concieved of in state of the art 3d. You would hear no one bitching about this and that character not being in their and that would be refreshing. The select fighter screen would be a little crazy to look at. Can it be done? Sure. Will they do it? Maybe but doubtful.

Seriously speaking, i'd love it if such a game came out.. All the MK characters in 3D!! Wow, that would rock! Then they can give fresh stories to ppl like Kai, Fujin and such.. I think it's possible but i dun know whether they'd do it.. I dun want it to happen with MK7 but maybe after that they can make a trilogy like wat u say, with MK5,6, and 7.. And like you said, the PS3 should be able to support such a thing.. Who knows, by then VR games might come out, and we could be playing as MK characters in VR and do all the special moves! I wanna do Reiko's 360 kick! That's d be a ball splitter! haha... Sorry, dumbass idea..
But i do hope such a game would be made 1 day...
Cheers bro

Never say never. If the MK team was smart they'd know what's good for them.
