I mean, I don't think that we need to wait until the game comes out to come to this conclusion. We know some stances will be extremely broken and some will suck. It's just how MK is, so here's the real question. Since you have the ability to give your character ANY special and ANY stance, do you think custom characters should be fair game in tournaments?

I for one say no. It simply isn't fair that your character will MOST LIKELY have the 3 best stances and it makes for some lop sided fights. In casual play sure, but I don't think it should count towards your online record. What do you guys think?

I say yes, because we can all make our characters our own way to fit our needs. Like for instance, my guy will have 2 weapon stances instead of 2 hand to hand kombat fighting stances. You may think thats unfair, but we all get to choose the same options, so it doesnt mean we are cheating, we are just being wise.

I'd say no. Even if the game did end up super balanced I'd say no simply because it's not fair to introduce unfamiliar characters to people during a tournament. It's not fair if someone is playing Scorpion and I'm playing a custom and I end up winning because I'm familiar with how Scorpion works but my opponent isn't familiar with how my custom is designed. If he gets hit by something it may likely be because he didn't know my guy had it rather than him not being able to avoid taking the damage.

So what? It just makes it all the more fun. And I am sure we will have some sort of Bio info on our characters like Moves and weapons etc.

I would also tend to say no, BUT... you can construct your tournaments so that you are not allowed to pick the same character over and over (which, imho, proves nothing).

A similar system also prevented the two MKDA tourneys I participated in to turn into a random cheese death match.

So what? It's a tournament..tournaments are NOT just "all the more fun" in tournaments you want to win, and you dont want lopsided shit like that.

I see no problem with the idea of using custom characters in tournaments. If you're a good MK player you can win no matter what, it's not like they're cheating with infinite health.

i say should be able to use em.... if your good you can overcome anyway.... they arn't cheating .... and even if you don't know what the person is capable of that makes it more interesting and realistic... in a real tournament you dont know your openants styles.. you know your own and you win byw hat you can do not what he can or cant do.... and you all have the options to customize a character... and they will all still have disadvantages... just like every character has pros and cons... so i say it's fair....

i agree w/ this guy. but it would be fun to have a tourney w/ only custom. and if one guy uses custom, the other guy should know in advance so that he can use custom if he wants.

I play in FPS shooter "leagues" all the time. These leagues are basically big tournaments that pit clans together on a schedule... sort of like a big tournament. In these leagues its all about configing and tweaking your weapons loadout and team strategy to win. There are also leagues that strive for realism, fun, competition.

What am i getting at here? Mortal Kombat Custom characters are not cheap and should be allowed in tournaments. What i think you will eventually see is everyone using the same "Whore" configuration which will eventually lead to a ban of that config. I think customs only tournaments and normal char only tournaments would be nice too... adding to the diversity of head to head play.

yes, ban them. there's going to be xbox players and ps2 players. that alone will fuck it up. i play xbox. i won't be able to bring my custom character to a ps2 tournament. vice versa to ps2 players.

why ban them? I mean its your choice as to what styles go in the character. If you put shitty styles into the char its your own fault he sucks.

I can see a problem with ppl including the best three styles in a character however... maybe impose a ban on combinations of the best styles?

If you start banning combinations eventually it's going to get to the point that playing as custom characters is pointless in tournaments anyway. So you can use your custom but if you have Pi Gua you must pair it with Ninjitsu. Those aren't rules a tournament should include. They are reasons customs shouldn't be allowed at all. You'll eventually end up with a bunch of customs that can't compete with the normal cast. What's the point?

you don't understand. how are xbox owners going to be able to play their custom characters at a ps2 tournament? how are ps2 owners going to play their custom characters at an xbox tournament? they can't.

only use universal characters at tournaments. plain and simple.

Legit tourny format.
A seperate CC/free for all tourny. Hell, lets get this shizzle uber broke with glitches and infinates legal. WOOT! grin

All CC's banned from legit tourny, though. I'm sure it will just come down to host preferance, however.

I say let the customs play. It's about the player not the character. Just because your custom has 3 fantastic styles doesn't mean they can use them well. It's a more realistic environment if there are random characters thrown in. It's only lopsided if you can't handle it. Besides, due to this argument, the tournaments, if possible, will be seperated into three groups. The main character only tourneys, those with customs only, and then the anything goes.

I thought I was the only one who believed that custom characters were retarded... I never liked this idea.

I think custom characters will have this "generic" feeling once you'll realize that you are somewhat limited in
a) Appeareance
b) Moves (that will be taken from known characters)
c) stances

But hey if people are excited about this idea its cool

Wow...forget having fun with a game right? Shesh... I'm so glad I grew out of that stage where winning was the most important thing when playing a video game against someone.

Good point Vers, but we'll have to wait and see when MKD comes out.I hope it's not like some sports games are when you Create a Person. In those kind of games everyone is running at normal speed but you look like your running for your life.

It would be better if you could decide what type of charcter you want to build. So you can be limited in some areas for example

Grappler:You can't be super fast and you have to have alot of strength and throw moves kind of like Zangift and Raiden(Kings Of Fighters).

Speedy:To explain this better this is Scorpion's area. He's fast and has alot of good defensive and Offensive attacks.

There are more but I just covered the basics.

i believe that there should be seperate tourneys for custom characters and normal characters, aswell as tourneys for all types of characters. This way, there will be fairness for all without banning custom characters because most people "will" use the 3 most powerful fighting styles for their character.
