After seeing Raidens look, I started thinking up reasons as to why he could be that way. The following are some of the ideas I’ve had. I’d like to thank Crow for his assistance and input.

To me, Raiden appears diminished. Kind of like a shadow of his former self. He may be mortal, still a god, dead or even possessed.

Raiden has red eyes now. Despite these, I still believe Raiden is good. As such a strong essence of good, even with the removal of his godly essence, I do not think he could become evil unwillingly. He could be evil and these eyes and the other features are signs of this and the evil is taking over his body.

As for the eyes, I was thinking that these were a sign of anger. Maybe they change colour dependant on his mood. We’ve known Raiden to be a happy but serious person, but his eyes have always remained white. Maybe they are now red because he’s angry. Maybe the red eyes are a sign of a power surge or a power loss. In this case, the removal of his essence. We could be looking at a severely weakened Raiden and the red eyes are the sign of a dying god maybe. Or he has somehow had a power boost and his eyes are more alive than ever. The black and ripped clothing could be a result of the release of the essence as many have already stated.

LadyRaiden mentioned a possible possession. This got me thinking. I was thinking that maybe upon the release of his essence, Raiden had an evil soul transferred into his body by the Dragon King. Although he may have not have been able to do this, so what if Shang Tsung did it, and is now using Raiden as means of fighting or fooling the Earth warriors. I also had thought he could’ve become apart of the DK’s army, only their eyes glow green, not red and he is still in his own body.

Unfortunately, I do not believe these theories could be true because of the following reasons.

As a god, and a strong essence of good, I do not believe another soul, good or bad could co exist inside his body. Any soul entering his body and staying there could possibly be destroyed as it would not be able to handle Raidens essence. Also, as Crow pointed out, Li Mei does not have this trait. Her eyes do not glow and it seems pretty clear that she is apart of the DK’s army. Also, if it was someone else, they most likely would not possess Raidens powers. His powers would be gone.

If Raiden was possessed, why use his name on screen? It would be stupid saying ‘Raiden wins’ when it’s not really him.

Also, Raiden still has Nan Chuan. You can see this clearly on the videos.

Since Raiden has his powers, I believe that he still is a god. As a mortal he most likely would not have them still. My theory here is that Raiden became an Elder god again as he knew he’d need extra power in order to destroy the DK. As we know, this did not succeed. The essence I believe Raiden to have released is his Elder God essence, not his godly essence. This would leave Raiden as a thunder god still and he can still have his powers. As above, the release of this essence causes his eyes to go red because of the severe power loss. Raidens thunder god powers however have kept him alive, or maybe even brought him back from a certain death and this is why his eyes are red.

Now going back to the possession theory and the thought of no soul being able to exist in Raidens body, what if it was another gods soul within Raidens body. Namely, Shinnok.

Shinnok is mentioned on Raidens bio as one of his foes. What if Shinnok were to have been released from the Netherealm and his soul transferred into Raidens body or what if it took it over somehow. Raiden, after releasing his essence would have been powerless to stop this. Shinnok, as a god would have been able to withstand Raidens good essence, despite being evil. In this way, he may have been powerful enough to take over Raidens body and merge with Raidens essence. This would give Shinnok Raidens powers and complete control over Raidens body. Crow mentioned that Shang Tsung could have assisted here. He would give Shinnok his amulet back if he has it and Shinnok could give Shang eternal life. However, again this probably couldn’t happen as Shinnok would exist in the Netherealm in his own body. I doubt anyone would want to free him other than Noob Saibot.

If any of this happened, his story would be too much like Kangs, and as said, why say his name if it isn’t him. I believe Raiden is still good, still has his own body and powers and is still a god.

Your thoughts?

My thoughts are you could've posted this in the Raiden is evil thread instead of making another separate one when there's so many raiden threads already up tongue

Raiden has always been the same old same old. In hearing his Bio I was hoping to shake up his story and give him a new direction, DEATH. But no, here he is, just Like Kang and Johnny Cage not dead. Irritated beyond belief I am. So Raiden does this huge power blast that per his bio was him "Sacrificing himself". Sacrific being to give something up. It didn't specify Sacrificing his godly powers it said himself which to me and many others meant his life. Damn that it didn't mean that. So to my dissmay we now have a "rough" looking Raiden in the game that has all his same powers as some have now said. If he has all his same powers then what has he given up? His Elder God Status? A cute costume? pretty skin? nice hair? Who Care's? If he has all his same old powers he's given up NOTHING. It's never made a difference in the game whether Raiden was an Elder god or a Thunder god. He had the same powers and was still almost always in the game with no real significant change in his story or powers. The only thing they ever change is his "Status"....WHOOPIE!
He is one of the greatest characters who, to me, has become a bore. I was hoping that this storyline does really change the Raiden story and that he isn't just a really worn out Raiden that still has his powers. Because again what would be the point. It's about as significant as the costume change in MK: Annihilation. And the red eyes? Is he sleepy? Take a damn nap grandpa. A dirt nap.

Thanks for letting me vent everybody. Sorry for being so pissy I'm just sick of some charaters being brought back just cause. They didn't bring back Rain or Sheeva and I like them better.

Ok I promise I'm done......for now.

If other people's ideas in threads that have a lot of people posting in don't get DP's but these ideas do because they were made in a separate thread I'll be making a complaint or 2 about the DP system wink

I think Boon wanted to put in Raiden but didn't want him looking the same. Someone came up with the idea of having him look burned up & they went with it. Thye dont' care what they said "sacrifice himself"'s logical meaning be damned. The story is and always has been secondary to their desire to fulfill their graphical wishes & character selection roster, based upon fan appreciation and feedback. The story they end up creating will be hoaky & full of holes, but I think Raiden looks cool right now, so I dont' care too much.

I, too, thought Raiden was dead for sure, and I hope this doesn't translate to someone possessing him. Dear god, that would suck. If they do this multiple times in the same game, I'm going to cancel my pre-orders on principle. I don't care if this is Deception, I'm frankly tired of seeing all these, Liu Kang had an orgy with Shinnok in the Netherbelly & then transported into Raiden's butt via the Void and that's why Raiden has "Angry Eyes!" (like Mr. Potato Head in Toy Story, no doubt. :|)

These theories are silly, far-fetched and must be stopped. And, I have to stop them.

I like this, an awesome theory and well thought through. A good reason to bring back the former Elder God Shinnok, plus that will give Noob Saibot a good role at last smile

This is basically a rewrite of a post I made in another thread. There is a few modifications to explain a few details that I overlooked. Posted it hear since tgrant mentioned it and I would like to add a few things to it he has mentioned....My theory:

Raiden did sacrifice himself, but when he 'died' the Dragon King imprisoned Raiden's soul (or it fled) and infused his body with a soul of a demon or similiar. Hence the red eyes. The reason why the possessed Raiden has the same powers and fighting skill is that like a certain demon sorcerer, the demon not inhabiting Raiden's corpse is able to copy the thundergod's abilites. Liu Kang may be in a similiar situation, but his was started because of the Deadly Alliance but either the Dragon King or someone gave his body an evil soul. Who else would Earth's defenders least likely want to fight? Raiden and Liu Kang have been their leaders, advisors, brother-at-arms/father-figure since the first game. Even if Earth's fighters knew of the evil souls, their sub-conscious would not want to fight them and the sub-conscious is a difficult thing to control and/or overcome.

Now comes Scorpion's deal with the Elder Gods. He himself once being a 'lost soul' would be the most likely canidate to locate the true souls of Raiden and/or Liu Kang. His job is to find the missing souls and help return them to their proper place. Either in the Heavens or their bodies I have no idea. Why the Elder God would do this is they finally saw what a threat the Dragon King truely is. If one of their own could not even scratch him with a kamikaze attack, they finally took notice. Perhaps they either started to feel a little guilty for not listening to Raiden in the first place or they finally saw what a true leader he was and seek to have him back.

Ashra (sp?) is supposely a demon huntress, perhaps her job is to take care of the demons inhabiting Raiden's and/or Liu Kang's forms. In the process she may end of 'killing' Raiden and Liu Kang again, but not being one of Earth's warriors who have fought beside/for them, she would/should have no hesitation in fighting or killing them.

Now Nightwolf, yes I believe he is also involved in this somehow. Supposely he is a shaman, someone who deals with spirits and/or souls. Maybe he is there to aid either/both Scorpion and Ashra in their jobs. Also, it seems strange that Nightwolf seems to have acquired the power of lighting all of a sudden. Someone help me here, did he have the lighting bolt move in MK3, I remember Rain having it but not Nightwolf? Perhaps Raiden's soul was not captured only weaken. Now Nightwolf holds Raiden soul (and therefore some of his power) in protective custody until there is a way to return it to it proper home.

There is another possiblity, instead of Raiden's soul being just weakened it was torn to shreds like the Egyptian myth of Osirius (sp? right god? I know it was Osirius's body and not soul buy you get the idea). The torn pieces would need to be recovered and reunitied to bring back the true Raiden. Nightwolf has one piece, thus giving him the power to summon lighting. Ashra another, giving her his torpedo move. The remaining pieces need to be recovered and that is were Scorpion comes in. It is his job to locate and recover the remaining pieces of Raiden's soul. Once that is done, they will need to drive the possesing demon from Raiden's corpse and return his restored soul back to it proper place.

Then there is the simple reason by Raiden's new look, this is the first time in centuries he is really, really angry. The outfit is an old battlearmor of his that was slightly singed by his fight with the Dragon King. The red glare is just proof of how seriously pissed he is. (Very similiar to tgrants but hey, I 'borrow' good stuff all the time.)

Anyways, my main concern and perhaps proof to the 'possession' theory is the Dragon King marks on Raiden costume. It looks like he has one on his hat and the back of his cape. Can't be sure because I haven't seen a really clear view of either. Why would Raiden of all people wear the mark of the creature that supposely killed him?

Note: Like tgrant's theory, the 'demon' in question may in fact be Shinnok. Shinnok does have the ability to shape shift and thus 'copy' other peoples abilities.

Good theories, but I think Raiden's condition is less complex then we think. To me, Raiden doesn't appear to be dead or possessed, but really war-torn. Like he just got out of a brutal battle with a even-matched foe.

I believe the reason his eyes are red are because when he's in full health and strong, his eyes glow white. When he's weakened and damaged on both physically and spiritually(from the ethereal sacrafice), it reflects in his eye color. Just my theory.

If you're going to make a statement like that, you sure as hell better support it. Many of us have faves from the MK4 era.

I'm not flaming ya, but if you don't try to back up that comment with reasoning, you're going to get slammed by others.

Yah I had a thread like this it got closed by the purple bunny. So he redirected me here. Now it's kinda a bit funny being that this thread was made after mine and he says it's already been done lol. How would I've known that purple bunny it was done after mine lol. You got to love that lol. But I have no problem with moving it here just thought its kinda funny and I would share it with you all lol. I guess FLSTYLE was right if you have many visits your immune to this lol.

My Theory:
Raiden unleashed his blast and some of the DK's evil went into his body. He was stunned for awhile when he awoke he noticed that he has changed. His Powers had become more powerful and darker causing his features to change. He was now part evil and good.

now I have two branches from this

He could control his powers to keep him good to decieve the DK. When he had the right chance he would challenge him to Mortal Kombat.

Or he has now turned evil on the side of the DK and is a big threat to everyone.(My theory)

raiden is good he just got fried by releasing alot of electrical energy on the dragon king which ended up charring his clothes and tearing up his cape. Losing his essence could explain y his face is pale now. If he was under control of the dragon king to lure the good guys into the jail cells, u would think that the dragon king would make sure he looks the same ..
But who knows raiden could be evil/possed and it would be an interesting twist to the Mk plot ..
And Ur theory on shinnok controlling his body would also be kool...atleast shinnok will only be mimicking raidens moves and not any 1 else’s..

Occam's (sp?) Razor: All things being equal, the simplest explanation is usually the right one. Now some of my thoughts on his eyes: Bear in mind that in his profile Raiden sacrificed his "godly essence" (I'm not sure if those are the exact words but you know what I'm saying). I think that this means not only sacrificing his powers (although it didn't look that way in the videos...) but also his divine grace. Thus I think he's got himself a mean streak now.

WELCOME TO MY NIGHTMARE

I like this 1. Some good stories and so Iam gonna give my take. I have 2 of them.

First off after Raiden "sacrificed" himself w/the ethernal blast it weaken Raiden enough that the Dragon King knowing of who "attacked" him could retailate fast. With Raiden in a weaken state and knowing else that can stand in his way, the DK possesses Raiden's soul. Knowing that Earth Warriors rely on Raiden as there leader the DK can use this as a "DECEPTION" to lead earths warriors into a trap.

My other theroy is like mention above. After releasing his essence, Raiden's power was left in a weaken state. His worn-down look is a cause of some of his powers leaving him temporary. The red eyes as mention above are a sign of Raiden in a weaken state. When healty and powers to max we see the white eyes. Raiden is weak, know showing that he needs help and that some1 else needs to step up.

Also, I wouldn't mind seeing Fujin play some kind of role. Maybe if Raiden is evil, Fujin could come to his aid. Also, wouldn't Sub-Zero play some sort of role in this? I thought Raiden looked to Sub Zero cause Lui Kang was dead(which we all know now hes not) as somewhat of Earth's new leader.

I just hope 1 thing- That he isn't liu kang in raiden's body!!!!
They clued the possibility of liu's soul inhabiting a dead body in DA, what if Raiden died after the blast, but liu went in? Could this be the rumored Zombie Liu? That would explain why there is a Ghost AND zombie liu... One is actually Liu Kang, and the other is Raiden! I kno I'm probably overthinking this, but maybe Midway wanted Lu to finally gain an assention after all those years of champion.. and Raiden either dies or his essence is ecovered?
Just a crazy theory
