Remember how the vibes of the old MK games use to be? (creepy, chilling, spooky, deadish...)

Remember how the vibes use to focus on horror? There use to be spooky, mysterious, interesting battlegrounds like "the soul chamber," "the dead pool," "the pit," "the wastelands," etc.... even COMPREHENSIVE battlegounds like "the bridge," "the subway," and "the waterfront." But now in MK4 and MK:DA, the kombat zones are so lame. What the hell happened to that creepy horror stuff? I also speak for the music. The background music use to be a lot more intimate with actual melodies. NOW in MK:DA it's just crap anyone could come up with (battlegrounds AND music). Even new characters don't come out with that "dark" look anymore like Sindel, Baraka, Shao Kahn, etc. It think MK:DA is an awesome game, but it just lacks the true "mortal kombat feel." Do any of you hope that MK:Deception brings back that original vibe, or are you fine with the new neutral, typical-fighting-game vibe? Which vibe do you prefer?

To make an MK with the old feel whould be the best.

I completely agree with you, especially regarding the lack of melodies in the music.. and just the overall feel of the music.
Deception needs layers of harmonies on top of utterly brutal minor key symphonic/orchestral arrangements to truly bring out the morbid and foreboding darkness that this franchise exudes.

I agree with the topic poster. The overall dark feel in Mortal Kombat I and II were a lot better than the semi-dark-cartoony feel in MK4 and DA. The DA character select screen music SUCKS. I loved those mysterious themes, MK3 having the best (char select screen theme I mean). The arenas in DA weren't 'mysterious' either.
But so far it seems Deception is going the right way.

Deception looks like a big step in the right direction for making MK's dark moody atmosphere from the originals. Hopefully the soundtrack will be more like MK1/MK2 as well, as the others didn't stand out.
MK2 was the best mix of darkness and light relief so far. Hopefully MKD will have that balance, without resorting to shit like Mokap.

Deadish yes.. yes indeed.
I'm pretty sure they're gearing this MK's "theme" towards MK2. Only using DA's engine. I assume they'll have even darker music and scarier levels.
MK never scared me.. I would hope it didn't scare anyone except for a girl. Because when I showed MK to a girl they'd freak back in the day.

i hope they orient the feel of mkd towards that of MK2... it had the darkest atmosphere out of them all... the music fit in prefectly... the levels... everything about it just captures a feel that they haven't duplicated since... i really hope they go back to their roots in this aspect.. bring back the dark music... the eerie lthisthingisdisableds... they need to sit down and look at mk2 and compare it with MKDA and bring back that old feel with the new game...
I couldnt agree with you more but i think the levels in MKDA werent at the calibur of mk1,2,3 but nonetheless they were stunninglly beautifull in detail. But in the Psm mag Ed says its going in a darker direction and with Forden kicking ass and with the level fatality's BACK im sure its gonna be hellla awsome so don't doubt the Midway crew yet cause there gonna deliver a DIE HARD KICK ASS game since MK2 hell it's gonna be MK2 and more in the sence that its gonna relaunch the franchise even further

i remember when i was a little kid i saw mk1 for the first time and didnt wanna play it cause i was worried id be fatalitied lol mk1 felt darker then mk2 but mk2's darkness was dark enough, since then its become more like "sweet valley high" colorfull and bright with dating and makeup and fashion

MK2 had the best mixture of light and dark. It was the only game I can think of that you could end a battle with cutting someone in half with a hat or end with with dancing under a disco ball...Now that's balance.
I'm really impressed with MK:D so far. It is defenately heading in the right direction.

MK 1,2, and 3 were the greatest, even though in 2D. Th fighter selection screen had good music, while MK4 and MK:DA's music was too "light". When the announcer says "Fatality" on 2 and 3, those also made it good. It's little things like this that all add up, and it's mostly the sound.

I agree, the music really has to be changed. The music since MK3 has all been really strange techno dance music. They need to bring that dark, broody MK1/MK2 music back. The only problem with that is, it was alot easier to make because it was midi type music. They would never get away with midis this day in age.

I kinda agree with you. MKDA did lose a bit of its edge. But MKD does seem to be shaping up to be a much darker game, so this problem may be solved.

Seriously, Ed Boon should use music and backgrounds to recreate that 'intimate horror' mood during battles. MK use to have a sort of 'ancient evil' look, but ever since MK4, it looks like a typical fighting game except with gore and SOME darkness.
well, we want more, right?
a lot of people believe that MKD is headed back to that style, but I saw some pictures of it, and the backgrounds look very plain like in DA. They need to have a creepy theme like "The Dead Pool", "The Graveyard", and "The Pit" to add that MK flavor we all love.
