I think this is a great render of Scorpion. It's give an edgy look. I was fond of him in MK2, so maybe that's why his appearance appeals to me. lol

I don't know what they are since I didn't really pay attention to the background other than the lava, but come on man it's lava. Trees + lava = dead trees. I doubt anyone at Midway is gonna try to put trees somewhere that trees can't go.
