Megadeth was gone after Mustaine hurt his arm, but supposedly they are doing a final album since Mustaine's arm is better now www.megadeth.com talks about it in one the front stories...
St. Anger was out of the element of Metallica's normal, but I agree that the Black Album started the descending trend of the style in Load and Reload... though I don't think I heard one guitar solo in the St. Anger album... And Justice For All is still my favorite Metallica Album...
Mudvayne would be an okay choice also for a dark heavy feel...
