Do I really need to go into the reasons why Mileena is popular? This has been gone over more than once and an abundance of reasons have been given in other threads in much detail. Why must people always put down one character to make their favorite look superior in some form or fashion. To say Mileena is nothing but a palette swap of Kitana is like calling the kettle black. Both Mileena and Kitana were introduced at the same time, so if Mileena is nothing but a copy of Kitana, then Kitana is surely nothing but a copy of Mileena, which in MK2 they both practically were. And What's this about Mileena having sub par moves? Mileena's sai throw and her spy kick, those two specials alone have become some of the most beloved moves of the MK franchise if I am not mistaken. Not to mention Mileena has a far more interesting and emotional story than half the other characters they ever introduced. So really it's no surprise that she is as hugely popular as she is, something that isn't going to change anytime soon.

Mileena was just as good as any of the other characters back in the MK2 days. and really she has always been a good character. i just think really her story is where she lacks.... never thought much of her story really...

it wasnt really till MKD that Mileena (and Baraka) became a lot more popular than they previously were. i question why as well? well neither are bad to play with (though Baraka ive started to like least over time in MKD and MKA). both got kill fatalities. both look good. and really... i think the explanation is all the promotion work. bascially Mileena and Baraka were the faces of MKD, thus became more recognizable and more popular. thats plus good performances in the game itself... yeah thats my explanation.

Kitana was quickly established as relevant to the central driving plot. So, even if Mileena was already quite literally a clone of Kitana, she would still be the less significant of the two characters, ergo she is the palette swap.

I can't say I'm much of a fan of either.
It seems reasonable, however, that Kitana can fulfil functions significantly different to other members of the cast, whereas Mileena overlaps with a lot of other characters pursuing the same rivalry ad nauseum, or acting as a lowly grunt.

I don't see how even the most deranged fan could really try to argue different.

another thing that helped in their popularity boost was that they hadn't been around in a while, and hadn't been in too many games (especially Baraka), but already did have a solid fanbase and with the return of them they got hyped up and a lot of people became new fans of them.

pretty much this is what happened with the likes of Rain and Chameleon becoming a lot more popular i believe because of how few games they were in and ppl just wanted to see them again. they got so hyped up and really they didnt turn out that bad.

i just think the MK team has the ability to make any character more popular. so in the future who knows who will be the next to have a huge boost in the popularity ladder?

Mileena is a girl. Girls are a rarity in the Mortal Kombat Universe, it seems.

I don't think it was much to do with popularity and more to do with the fact with only 10/11 MK characters, most people would have thought that there would be at least 3 female characters. But Midway destroyed that dream. Bravo!

Plus it seems to be the perfect excuse for DLC...

It's funny how so many people forget this simple fact.

Saying Kitana and Mileena are the same is the same argument as saying Scorpion and Sub-Zero are the same. Both sets of fighters were introduced as palette swaps with very different move sets. Advanced technology has allowed for more differentiation in appearance, but they were very different fighters from the very beginning.

Mileena is the Butterface Goddess.

I think Mileena has always been a fan favorite, but her popularity really skyrocketed after Deception. It wasn't just the heavy promotion she recieved, it was her presentation: The look, the story, the gameplay, and personality.

She was just very well done in MKD. Slap that all over covers, websites, etc. and you've got an instant series icon.

So in conclusion, she's popular because she's high quality in all aspects and heavily promoted.

That's the recipe for a huge fanbase.

Her moves aren't really sub-par, some of them are very effective.

Her outfit wasn't originally Kitana's. They both appeared at the same time, and had the same outfit, just like Sub-Zero and Scorpion had, except for colour.

Whether or not the MK team were gonna give whoever a certain outfit or not. It doesn't matter unless it's actually done and in the game.

I think you will find that Kitana had Mileena's costume, minus the veil in a couple of the endings from Deception. Whether it was 'intended' for her or not, it doesn't matter, considering it was never actualised.

Mileena is MK's femme fatale. She's the villian every straight guy wants to bone and every straight girl wants beat the hell out of because they're always catching their boyfriends beating off to the Sexy Mileena poster.

She is the one of the well known villianesses of the video game industry, though there aren't many villianesses. Minus the teeth, she's the chick everybody wants. Hell, even gay guys want to fuck her!

I disagree about Mileena being Catwoman's counter-part. Catwoman skirts on both sides of the law while Mileena has always been a evil. IMO, Mileena has usually been a sub-par fighter, but her uniqueness and back-story have gained her many fans.
