Who are the most popular Mortal Kombat characters?

Well, Sub-Zero and Scorpion are given.
I'd say Kitana, Mileena, Reptile, Raiden, Kung Lao, Shang Tsung, Quan Chi and Sonya are up there too.
Honourable mentions to Cage, Kang, Smoke, Shao Kahn, Goro, Sektor and Cyrax among others.

Kabal has a massive fanbase too. I'm suprised he wasn't mentioned.
Sub-Zero is still my favorite character, not because he's "popular" but because, visually, he's a great character, storywise, has always had the most potential, and gameplay wise, is an excellent mid-to-high-tier fighter, not too powerful, but hardly a push-over.
I'm not too fond of Scorpion, simply because his once-excellent storyline has become a joke. He really hasn't evolved much as a character at all, but there's still potential in him. A lot like Spawn was great once, but has become dilluted recently.
I used to like Kitana, Mileena, Smoke, and Raiden, but nearly all of them, except Mileena, have become tired and stale. Smoke really is completely overshadowed by Noob. Raiden going postal was novel, but that's gotten old. And Kitana... my dear Kitana... what have they done to you? I'm more of a Mileena fan now.

This depends on what u like to do as a fighter. I love combos so i have 3 choices.
Raiden-from DA, unspopable if u know how to use him
Reptile- from DA...the longest combo he has. even when timed u still can block it.
And my fav....Frost...that bitch is fast and deadly.

Scorpion and Sub-Zero of course.
Then most characters from the first two games. Raiden, Johnny Cage, Sonya, Liu Kang, Reptile, Baraka, Kitana, Mileena.
I hate the fact that people are in love with classic characters regardless of their redundant or boring stories in favor of some fresh new characters. Kenshi, Hotaru, Kira, Mavado....those are good characters. Some people just have to go.

I agree for the most part, except a few classic fighters returning wouldn't hurt anything. Most fighting games still have most of their original casts, and nobody complains about Soul Calibur or Virtua Fighter getting stale, so I don't see why a couple reminders of MK's beginnings would be so bad.

Kahn, Goro, Tsung, Kang, Rayden.

This said it all for me.
People should never let popularity influence their liking of characters in any way.

Smoke IS NOT my favorite simply because he's not known. I've been down with Smoke since MK2 when I first fought against him. I then used a Game Genie code on my SNES that allowed me to play as Smoke in MK2 and I loved him. Then in MK3 when I found out he was automated I thought "Wow he's probably going to be pretty cool" so then I tried him out and yeah he was still awesome and in fact the cybernetic version became my favorite. I was so pissed off when he was left out of MK4 and MK Gold, and was also missing from Deadly Alliance. It was great to see him back in Deception. I have always been kick ass as Smoke, and mostly because Ed Boon as continued to provide Smoke with such great moves over the years, even now that he's been individualized he's still awesome. In my opinion he's the most original of the three cyborgs (I've still got love for Cyrax and Sektor though, they kick ass too). If I was honestly going to pick a character based on how well known they are then I would have picked someone like Mokap or something.

Dude, that's EXACTLY what I think. Sub-Zero and Scorpion are my favorite since the beginning and that won't change. Saying they are overused is just a way people try to make themselves seem more individual when it's doing the exact opposite ! And your points aren't even arguable. Kudos.
