XBOX 360 Elite or PS3? - Wii has just entered the frame!

posted01/27/2008 09:29 PM (UTC)byI've sold my PAL XBOX 360 due to my return home. I'm currently using my lil' brother's 360 but I'd have to get myself a new console sooner or later. However, I'm very much undecided as to which console to go for (please don't mention Wii!).
I'm thinking of getting an XBOX 360 Elite but having been to several Sony stores, I'm starting to like the blue-ray capability on PS3. I love the picture quality. It'd perfectly match one of those new Sony Bravia HDTVs. Movie factor is very important to me because I would like to facilitate my whole entertainment experience via whichever console I purchase. Is HD as good as Blue-ray?
So my question is this; Which console should I go for? Elite or PS3. It'd be nice to hear from someone with first hand experience on both consoles. Thanks.

Elite, go Elite!!!
PS3=crap
Just my honest opinion, I'd go with Wii and 360 if I had the money to get them.
Blue-ray is "supposedly" better then HD, but honestly dude. One of my best buds has an elite and HD, it looks GORGEOUS. I can't see spending a couple of hundred dollars more on Blu-Ray when it looks virtually the same honestly..
Plus games and online play is better for the 360 Elite. The only thing to watch out for that I hear people complaining about is the Ring of Death scenario but when compared to the PS3 flaws...that's nothing IMO.
Wii is just fun as heck IMO, and actually gets you off your ass lol know what I'm saying.
But the choice is your man, I'd go with the Elite though in this case

Elite, there is a new graphics card that helps with the overheating issue. Buy one of those coolers that snap on the back also. It will help the life of your box for sure.
If you want real blue-ray then buy a blue-ray 1080p.

quest covered graphics ill cover the games aspect.
The only big title that is exclusive to sony anymore is MGS4 with DMC4 making its way to the 360 and it will have incentive to replay with the achievement points available. Not to mention the marketplace is so much more organized and just put together so much better.
Hot titles
360:
GOW
DMC4
GTA4
COD4
Condemned(sequel coming soon)
DOA4
VF5(online)
Halo 3
Bioshock(more than likely game of the year)
Dead Rising
Lost Planet
Aegis Wing(free on arcade, great game)
Saints Row
The Darkness
Quake 4
Crackdown
PS3:
GTA4
Uncharted
COD4
DMC4
MGS4
Resistance
RE5
Time crisis 4
Tekken 6
GOW3
Just so much more variety on 360. In another year and a half ps3 might be able to compete title wise, but the 360 marketplace completely blows sony outta the water.

Condemned was badass. I found it best to play at night in the dark. I have surround sound and it literally made me jump somtimes. I will just buy the sequal if I hear some good stuff about it.

Thanks guys and thank you Doohoo for listing those games.
At this point, I'm 80% on Elite but let's hear more from some PS3 fanatics.

@Gtrax
The PS3's being made now are no longer backwards compatible. It will not play a PS or PS2 game anymore. There are reasons for this and if you want to know about it google it and you'll see. I would have liked to buy a PS3 and I would have bought every MegaMan game ever created!

From a gamer's perspective I would go with the 360 due to the fact there is currently a lot more online competition due to the fact more people have 360's on top of the fact there are more games for it. But that can change in a couple of years. I like the PS3 and I think overall its probably the better system because of all the features Trax mentioned and I will get one by this christmas time. I want to play that Ninja Gaiden Sigma.

Thanks for your input dude! I'll probably post a similar question on PS board depending on feedback on this one.

Thanks Quest! That sucks though! I'm going to goggle it to find out why. But that alone is a major drawback. Not for me in particular because I only played MKD and MKA on PS2. But I feel for others with huge catalog of PS2 games. Nice info, Quest!

Definitely Groy! I think I'm going to have to get PS3 eventually because of Blu-ray factor because there's little sense in investing in a Blu-ray player that cost almost as much as a console. But I am yet to hear of any hot games to really make me crave for it. However, 360 on the other hand is just way too good from online gaming perspective.
Also Quest mentioned we can now start download XBOX games from marketplace. That's tight but I would need a huge HDD for it and Elite has 120GB.

I read this thing and it covers most of what you're asking about, Trax. You should check it out. Reading this, the Xbox 360 seems superior to the Playstation 3 is ALL categories except "potential performance", meaning that the Cell processor is more powerful than the triple-core Xenon CPU. But it's harder to develop for the Cell processor and use that potential, so a lot of it is wasting. For now. Eventually, people will start utilizing it and it will be better. For now, it's not, but it will.
Other than that, Xbox 360 seems to be better in all categories. More games on Xbox 360 (which means more QUALITY games). Xbox Live trumps every other online system (and probably always will). Xbox Live Arcade seems to be way ahead of the Playstation Store. And the thing that a lot of people seem to miss; Xbox 360 actually has superior graphics. The Xenos (360) is more powerful than the RSX (PS3). There's even a contrast list of multi-platform games you can check out from this link.
There's a little summary, but you should check this out to see it explained better for yourself.

There was a report a week and half ago on gamespot that Sony was bailing on the Cell technology...
Here's my take on it Trax...
As far as I am concerned the two consoles are close enough for me not to have a preference. The ultimate decision to me comes down to games. XBox has several games that are exclusive. PS3 only has one exclusive game that I would play (Metal Gear Solid 4, Damnit I want to play that). So, with the larger selection of good games and the far superior online aspect the 360 is an easy decision for me.
Here's one more thing, though. The HD DVD Player for the 360 is sold seperately and it is fucking expensive, basically the same price as an HD DVD player on its own. The Blu-Ray thing comes w/ the PS3 already. I'm not really even sure what the hell a Blu-Ray is anyways. You can rent (Download) movies in HD off of XBox Live, though. You can Download TV shows, too... Hell, I won't be surprised if you could download a damn pizza through that thing, they have pretty much anything you could imagine.
Oh, and I don't own a PS3 so you'd never get to play Omerta in anything. That alone should tip the scales...

The Red light of death is not really as bad as it's made out to be. I had it once with my other console and Microsoft replaced it for free. But it took close to 2 weeks tho!

Yeah! Like Choas pointed out too, I think having a powerful machine and fully utilizing that power are two different things. And Microsoft being a software maker are always going to have the edge over Sony because they can easily provide developers with tools needed.

i have both the ps3 and the 360. 3rd party game look a lot better in the 360 then they do on the ps3. the 360 also gets patches and map pack for there online game about once a month. only ps3 game that get that are rfom ( just a fast pace halo) and war hawk (SWBF and BF MC with more tanks).
blue ray and hd are close to the same thing. many hd movies can also be played on on any dvd player. blue ray has more room on the disk. but in all both come out at 1080p and 7.1 surround sound. both upgrade normal dvds from 480p to 720p/1080i with hdmi cables.
ps3 can play ps2 and ps1 games. its going to be the same thing as the 360. they can play alot of older games just not all.
i like my 360 a lot more then my ps3 just better games.

All in all it's all on G-Trax whether he wants to get a PS3 or an Elite. However, if you decide to get a PS3 look out for me on Tekken 5: DR. I'll be glad to annihilate/destroy/slaughter/kill/obliterate/pwn/murder/own, and all the other words related to kill.

Thanks dudes for your input. It's good to get PS people aboard and understand why you would prefer the console (PS3) to elite. At this I think I'll get an Elite first and get a PS3 probably 3-6months later for Blu-ray.
However, this cheap shot by Devil kills it for me...

As for which one I'm going to use more, they both have their pros and cons. I love 360 of course because that's what I had before but also wanted to see if PS3 has any edge of some sort i.e. Blu-ray or maybe even better games. But my conclusion after it all is that 360 still retains the edge and this thread has helped me understand why e.g. new dash board features etc.
