Biggest Game Letdowns?
Biggest Game Letdowns?

posted08/20/2004 07:14 AM (UTC)by It's summer, so naturally, tons of games are being released. Games Like DRIV3R and Doom 3, but did they reach the standards of the previews and commercials praising them? I hear Driv3r was a big letdown, stupid name too. Just say the name of the game you thought was a big letdown, and state why.

Well, I haven't played Driv3r yet, but in the few reviews I read, Driv3r is supposedly glitchy, making some parts of the game seem sloppy. As for Spiderman 2, I guess you're right, but I like the fact that it isn't just straightforward missions like the N64 spiderman...memories...

I liked Spiderman 2 a lot. The missions were kinda bland and the mechanics invovled with 'advancing' in the game were kinda dumb, but the free roaming was enough to keep me busy. I loved scaling to the tops of the buildings, the higher you got the less sound, and some buildings literally put you in the clouds. And the Statue of Liberty, that was excellent.

Anyone that disagrees with me that Devil May Cry 2 was no-where the game it's prequel was should be locked up and had the key thrown away
Smackdown 3 for PS2. That **** of a game used 4 megs of an 8 meg memory card. And to further slap you in the face knowing how much they could've improved it if they'd taken the time, the next 2 games allowed you do more with only a couple hundred kilobytes.

- SpongeBob: Revenge Of The Flying Dutchman
Okay, this game needed SO much more work done on it. Especially in one scene where SpongeBob asks Squidward to race him to the Krusty Krab. By the time you get there, it resets the game to the PS2 file manager! What the %$$%?!
- Mad Maestro
I won't even start on this one....next.
- If this can be considered as a game, the Klik N Play game based on Invader Zim, Race to the crazy taco.
One huge problem to this game: YOU COULDN'T WIN.
It just gives you points for running in the street as Gir endlessly and eating tacos and not getting bumped into a truck.

Tekken 4. Crappy new characters, crappy redesigns of the old ones (green spandex??). The gameplay was "tweaked". And by "tweaked", I mean "ruined". The "new, interactive backgrounds" were heinous, and the story was stupid. Lets hope Tekken 5 can pull the series out of that toilet.

Ok, well you didn't exactly say Doom3 was a letdown, but this game was far from it. Seriously, I have not had this much fun playing a FPS since i played doom2 over my 28.8 modem with 2 or 3 of my friends.
The only thing that may have been a letdown in anyway was the online play being a little laggy. Some matches will be more than others, but overall it wasn't that bad in my experience.

I respect that..
but how can you? It has no storyline, same levels for each group, got rid of knuckles glide, and I had alot of expectations for it and was a HUGE letdown to me.

That's true, but that game had to be made. Somehow they had to go to 3D. BUT FOR CRYING OUT LOUD... NOT THIS WAY!!!
Doom 3 gets my vote for letdown of the year, mainly because of how repetitive the game was. I don't ever want to see another grey corridor in my life. Even the original Doom games had more level variety than this one.
After the initial "boo!" factor, the game really didn't scare me at all. I quickly came to expect enemies to just appear behind doors and pop out of corners.
Between the whole "space marine" story which has been done to death (thank you , Aliens) and the monorails with generic characters saying "I can't be bothered right now", I couldn't tell if the game was trying to be more like Quake 2 or Half-Life. All it really needed was the crowbar, I guess.
Hell was a nice change as far as levels are concerned (hours and hours after going through the corridors), but that segment ended WAY to quickly, and I almost uninstalled after I was sent back to the corridors...but, for whatever reason, I dredged on...
I didn't care for the "hold flashlight or gun, but not both" factor, and the weapons were for the most part, fairly generic. Most of the weapon sound effects were quite cheap, but none as cheap as the impact sound of punching something.
The game just didn't seem like it wanted to end, far after I wanted it to. I played it all the way through to say I did it, but I have no desire to ever play it again. It seemed more like a tech demo to show of the flashy new engine than a full-fledged follow-up to the Doom franchise.
Cyberdemon was pretty cool (beyond cheap, but cool), but he didn't make up for the negatives of this game, IMO.
Don't get me started on the "ending" either.
BTW...NO weapon in a Doom game should be more powerful than the BFG, and the BFG shouldn't be dumbed down, for any reason.

The biggest game letdown I can think of right now is none other than Mortal Kombat:Deadly Alliance.
I wasn't to fond about the new fighting syle when I heard about it but I thought it would at least be decent. damn, It was even WORSE than I expected. What a peice of shit this game was.
MKDA bashing never gets old.

Bein the Tekken fan I am I'll take the position of it's loyal defender
The story didn't do much for me either, but that's only because there wasn't a lazer zapping, fire breathing boss at the end, I enjoy fighting as/against Heihachi under normal circumstances, he's quite the challenge.
Gameplay wise, it wasn't a total loss, the new closed areas made sure you could keep backtracking on a timed game to steal a win.
The improvements to the side-step function were brilliant, it felt more like a 3D game than ever.
character wise their were some great new moves added to the characters, my personal fav Kazuya had a lot of new things to do as well as my second fav Jin. I never played much as Steve but him was well done.
