They both seem to think the only reason to live is for simple pleasures, but i find it difficult to tie it into changing someone else's opinion on something.
Perhaps Alana is going through a break up and trying to change her bf's mind about leaving. This sets Matt off b/c he believes if the guy wants to leave, its for the best b/c if he stays it'll only end anyway and then it'll be worse b/c the more time Alana is with this guy who doesn't love her, the more she will get attached and the more it will hurt when he leaves. Hence the "everyone ends up alone and broken" b/c in the end, your love will leave you (whether by choice or not i.e. death) and the loss will crush you.
