The Little (absolutely glorious) Mermaid!!!!

Absolutely the best Disney Movie and the one that made sure Disney is still with us today. Disney was at its worst and this was the movie that would either save the Empire or end it. This film did so much more!

Ariel with her beautiful voice, red hair, fins, and her world under the sea started the Renaissance that brought us the very memorable and unstoppable Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Lion King, Hercules, etc.

Yes, I've discovered that I am a huge Disney fan because these classic films are true masterpieces and works of art. It's a real shame that most of the new stuff that is out today cannot live up to these wonderful classics.

Tangled, Enchanted, Nemo, etc are all great exceptions, of course, but, Disney really hasn't topped itself with any of its new movies. None of them can live up to the great classics that will remain immortal forever.

The soundtrack of The Little Mermaid remains one of the top best musical creations Disney has ever produced. A true work of magic and (probably) the films most notable victory:

YOUR SOUL IS MINE!

I am assholish enough to state that the original tales were not as happy as Disney would like you to believe it:

Snowwhite: medieval folk tale, actually an allegory for assassinations within regal families for succession, necrophilia. SW never wakes up from the glass coffin.

Mermaid: she dissolves into foam and, I am hazy on this, becomes some sort of ghost with a curse which has no basically no chance to redeem herself.

Coinciderntally the Grimm tales were also toning down the violence and darkness of the original folk tales (which were originally not meant for kids when they were created).

Yeah, they neatly tidied up that story by:

-removing Hera's homicidal hatred of Heracles.
-removing Heracles' mortal mother from the equation.
-removing Heracles' violent selfish tantrums.
-removing the fact that he was a serial rapist.
-removing the fact that he was a pederast. (though it wouldn't have occured anyway)
-removing the fact that he killed his wife and his children in a fit of rage.
-above fit came because of Hera.
-removing the fact that he was a jackass.

Which brings me to another point. Why, to my tastes, does the mainstream animation still cater to oversanitizing the production? Only a few truly smart examples (Toy Story trilogy) exist which have to go to insane and awesome lenghts to circumvent this kid-friendly prison by being incredibly subtle.

Fantasia was always a favorite of mine as a kid watch that at 2 or 3 in the morning without a sound in the house and you'll be in a trance.

My favourite Disney movies are The Hunchback of Notre Dame & Hercules.
But if they are not "old" enough I'd go with Beauty & The Beast.

Hahaha. This post makes me feel really old.

The 90s weren't THAT long ago, were they? I am not pushing 30, I am not pushing 30...

Robin Hood, Stone in the Sword, Sleeping Beauty. All of those are still great!

You guys probably haven't seen it, its one of those obscure 1960s live action films. It's called Charlie the Lonesome Cougar. It was filmed in my hometown while the log drives were still in operation and before a Dam was built. I'm not a big fan of my town, and I NEVER wanted to go into logging because my dad always made me promise I wouldn't, on account of him being forced into it for financial reasons. Even though its what my Grandfather, Father, and Uncle did, because of my father's warnings logging, and really any sort of forest related work became radioactive. Anyway, when I watch this movie, all that goes away, and I just feel so warm, happy, and proud. It's a unique piece of history, and though I personally wouldn't want to be a part of it, I'm glad my family was a part of it.

Without a doubt in my mind.

The Lion King

I only watched it recently after all these years...but I still remembered how much I loved it only this time I was able to spot all the voice actors now I am older....Actually a little annoying when you can see the real face of the voice in your subconcious when your concentrating on a Lion grin.
Rowan Attkinson is epic gold for Zazu though.

Also... at 21 years of age....I never expected myself to (and quite loudly) call out " go on Simba, fuck her Lion face off " during the *can you feel the love tonight* scene... sat in my caravan...alone.
..... What can I say.... it just seemed apropriate at the time.

I also, on a smaller note, love Dumbo for just one scene, "Pink Elephants On Parade". I FUCKING adored, and still adore, watching those sick minded little bastards dancing, morphing, and singing that mesmerizing tune ! A work of genius, if you ask me!

That actually scared me when I was really little!

I used to love "Peter Pan", but now I realize how horrible that movie is.

My other favs:
-Little Mermaid
-Lion King
-Beauty and the Beast
-A Goofy Movie (After my stepfather died, I watched that movie a lot. It reminded me of him!)
-Robin Hood

I see a lot of you have listed two of my 3 least favorite Disney movies. Hercules and The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Hercules for the reasons Chrome listed, plus the changing of the 12 labors, the blaming of Hades, etc.

I don’t like the Hunchback of Notre Dame because it changes the story, I mean Arch Deacon Frollo (not Judge) isn't even the story's main antagonist, the "hero" Phoebus is. Frollo is more of a tragic character, who ws forced into the priesthood to maintain his family's meager status, while his lazy younger brother sponges off him. Meanwhile, he begins to fall for Esmerelda, and knowing he can't have her for himself because he is a priest, he begins to break down and believes she is a demon sent to tempt him. Frollo is finally relieved when Esmerleda is hanged and he let's out a laugh, which Quasimodo hears and pushes him off a ledge. Also, Frollo was a caring father to Quasimodo, teaching the the deaf Quasi a form of sign language, so he can communicate. Also they left out Quasimodo's holding of Esmerlda's corpse and dying of sadness.

But the worst, so bad I don’t even need to describe the flaws, is Anastasia. AWFUL.

Anastasia is not a Disney movie.

And, seriously, nobody cares about historical/book accuracy when watching a Disney movie. It's not about that. These movies are designed for entertaining children, simple as that. We know that when we watch Disney's Hunchback, we aren't going to see Esmeralda twitching as the last bits of life leave her body. We aren't going to see Frollo reduced to nothing as he splatters across the ground. We won't be presented with the depressing image of Quasimodo's skeleton tangled with that of a girl. It is an interpretation of a story, not a documentary of the book. I am absolutely in love with this story, I even wrote a four act play about it, but I too made changes to the story. It is no fun to recreate something only to be bound by it. The joy of the experience comes from the change itself, for me.

Also, the whole Phoebus story line could have been worked into the movie, but it was a little too complex for a children's movie, I think.

Also, Hunchback of Notre Dame had spectacular music. I will never ever forget "Hellfire".

Without a shadow of a doubt, Aladdin or the Lion King. They were THE cartoon movies of my childhood, which I wore out my dad's VCR (remember those?) with, alongside Batman 89 and Transformers 86.

I can pretty much quote all of Aladdin verbatim, and I once got some major applause for singing along to the entire Prince Ali song pretty acurately - with all voices intact.

Lord, how I hate Disney's "Vault" horseshit though. I missed both films on DVD, and never have time to rifle through pawn shops for them. I really gotta bite the bullet sometime soon and just get 'em off Amazon sellers, or Ebay, or something.

Of course, they're totally not going to let kids know how over sexualized and psychotic killers the Greek Gods were. The only problem is that Disney even knew that the movie was going to plop anyways. Which made me ticked when reading because if they knew this movie wasn't going to be that big of a success, Hercules could have been one of the greatest Disney movies to have come out of all time... Well, it'll be up there with the other legendary Disney movies.

I have in my hands here, a great Disney book that talks about basically the entire works of Disney starting from the way early 1900s to now. And even though I'm slightly agitated over the fact that they hardly did any coverage on Hercules as much as they did with their other movies, still, I had to bring this to the public since Chrome here has mentioned about how kid-friendly they turned the Gods into...

If The Hunchback of Notre Dame was an ambitious disappointment, Hercules (1997) was a flippant failure, sadly so since it was directed by the talented team of John Musker and Ron Clemenets, previously responsible for the Little Mermaid and Aladdin, and produced by Aiice Dewey. A visitor to the studio when Hercules was in pre-production would have seen concept art - including drawings by the British caricaturist Gerald Scarfe - and storyboards that gave promise of a witty, somewhat campy spoof on Greek mythology, cleverly overlaid with deliberate anachronisms, a little like a latter day take on "Pastoral Symphony" segment of Fantasia.

By the time the film reached the screen, however, it had become arch to the point of tiresomeness. The idea of Greek Chorus in the form of a Motown girl group probably sounded great when it first came up at a story meeting, but as realized - and despite some decent Alan Menken songs - it's a novelty that soon loses its charm. There's nothing wrong with having fun with the Greek myths, but unless there's a sense of respect underlying the humor (satire would be strong a word for this production) then the fun falls flat, and that's exactly what seems to have happened here.

As in all Disney animated features of the nineties, the produced values are terrific - the animated flames that dance on Hades' head, for example - and Hercules cotnains some clever visual gags, but it is then on character and the hero in particular is essentially a sap who, even when he shows signs of achieving his allege potentiel, remains silly rather than sympathetic. It's difficulty, in fact, to point to a single really sympathetic character, - certainly not Meg, the tarty heroine - and a Disney animated movie that lacks the dimension of empathy is doomed to a lovely place in the pantheon. What is missing in this production is the sure touch of Howard Ashman, whose understanding of how campy Broadway wit could be made to mesh with Disney char might have turned this movie into something special.
