I don't know why consoles are hopping on the gimmick train. Maybe that's how it's always been. I could give less than a shit about different styles of play. Just give me good exclusives and a controller that isn't shaped like a boomerang.

i just read an article that said this will also work with other titles like horror rpgs ect not just fps.

right now i think its just in the early stages but dude can you imagine playing dead space 1 with this? that would be fun and also creepy as hell

That looks pretty awesome. I'd definitely use that but it is probably one of those things that will work well if you have a certain layout to your room. I doubt it would work too well for people with TV's in the corner of their room unless they tinker with it and make it possible.

All I can say is I really don't like the direction consoles are headed.

Even around the release of the current-gen consoles, I sort of had the feeling they were going to be the last leap in gaming technology for a while (and it wasn't even that big of a leap, at least not compared to the transition 16-Bit to 32-bit technology).

From this point forward, loading times may get shorter, skin textures may look more realistic, and lighting/shading may get more sophisticated. I don't know how anyone can expect more than that these days, and honestly, none of that stuff really impresses me anymore.

The next leap isn't going to be gaming presentation, but a change in how we play games (and as we've already seen with the Wii and Kinect, there's gonna be growing pains).

Not me. I feel like my PS3 was a waste for gaming this gen. I own less than 6 games for the system and I have over 60 Xbox 360 games. I've used my PS3 more for watching movies and with the next Xbox supposedly having a Blu-Ray drive, I see little reason to own a PS4. Sony is really going to have to come up with good exclusives next gen. It's going to take more than God of War and PS All-Star Battle Royale to get me to buy a PS4.

I can see game environments getting much bigger along with having a longer draw distance and being able to support more players at once next gen.

originally i was going to retire after this gen but if this new xbox has a similar 400 dollar price like the ps4 who knows maybe i will jump on the xbox720 bandwagon. thing is though i want to see the gaming library for both systems before i drop any cash on it

I'd say look no further than the Vita to see how they want to change the way you play. Social aspects are pretty prominent throughout the system and seems to be overall where the hobby is headed. As a more solitary gamer, I could give a fuck less what trophy my friend just earned or that a random gamer from "Hotlanta" thinks the graphics on the new god of war are "hella gay". Just enjoy the damn game.

In terms of power, now that Sony is going with an AMD chip set, I would imagine the days of inferior PS ports are gone with the wind. I think both systems are gonna be on par with high end p.c.'s(for about a month or two).

As far as "being the central hub of the living room". Microsoft and Sony have both had their eyes on that for a while. PS2's were a lot of people's first dvd player just like most people's first blu ray player was a PS3. I think the xbox has the edge on this for now, despite the fact that the ps3 was recently revealed to be the machine more widely used for netflix(weird).

As always, Sony is most assuredly gonna have some awesome first party exclusives to lure people over. InFAMOUS, Killzone, God of War, Gran Turismo, Little Big Planet, Motorstorm, among countless others...all great franchises. At least 3 of the ones I mentioned are rumored to be shown off with the console, which is awesome.

The thing that worries me the most is marketing. It seems like Sony took their lumps with the ps3 and are applying a lot of the lessons learned with the ps4(easier dev tools, great launch lineup, price points, etc.), but the marketing for recent games has been non existent. PS All Stars Battle Royale was Sony's big holiday game last year...and nothing. The PS Vita is a prime example, when's the last time you saw a vita commercial? Hype is non-existent. Did you know that a new Sly Cooper just came out? Yeah, nobody else does either. You gotta sell the legend with this shit, and Sony just isn't pulling through.

Overall, I'm optimistic. I think it could be a great system as long as we're not battered over the head with social options at every corner, the lineup of games is varied, and people actually know the damn thing exists.

We shall see.

Meanwhile, I will continue to have fun with an N64 while my current gen games gather dust.

Gaming is on a decline anyway, andf the future is in social network games.


Plus, the new concurrent console the SteamBox would be more akin to a PC anyway, so...

It's expanding in that direction but the core gamer audience isn't going anywhere.
