Although I don't crack my knuckles, I can share a similar experience that may answer this question. I've been double jointed in my fingers since I was at least four years old, and every time I perform a double-jointed thing with my fingers, the joints crack. I only found out some years earlier that all of my fingers were double jointed (when I was four, I was only able to do it with my left thumb, middle fingers, and pinkies), and because of this, the joints in the middle of my fingers have permanently swelled in different sizes; my middle fingers are the most swelled, while my ring fingers (which I only found out were double jointed three-four years ago) are minimally swelled. I think if you do continue doing this many times a day for X amount of years, you will eventually have to change your ring size.
