Supreme Court: 'hurtful speech' of Westboro Baptist Church is protected
The Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Westboro Baptist Church exercising their right to free speech regardless of the fact that it may be hateful or take place in inappropriate settings.
For those of you who don't know, The Westboro Baptist Church is the extremist group in Topeka, Kansas who demonstrate open hatred for those who they believe defy God's will. The organization is run by Minister Fred Phelps.
What do you guys think of this?
Do you think the Supreme Court did what they should have done?
If so, what do you think of Supreme Court Justice Alito who voted against the Church's right to protest?

There was this video I saw on you tube a couple years back that showed those idiots protesting on a street corner. NO ONE acknowledged them and guess what? They were gone within 15 minutes. I know if I ever see them in person I will not even LOOK at them, just keep on walking.
As far as them protesting at funerals. Smh. Something needs to be done about that. I'm very disappointed that nothing has.

Yup, pretty much that. The judicial system has to remain impartial, even if these people are vile scum.

Yes.
Someone's going to lose it one day and blow these miserable people into bits and pieces.

Yeah, I really wish they'd stumble into the wrong neighborhood one day and protest the wrong thing to the wrong people.
Shirley flucking Phelps... Oh my god... Look, I know that these people are basically the definition of what you would call, "retard," but this woman... I saw a small documentary of her and what she does with her family. They have a choir session that basically changed the words of "I'm Proud to be an American," to how they hate being an American.
I laughed because if you hate America THAT much to where we have to re-word a song about this great country, why continue living here? This woman is just... horrifically stupid. This whole group is stupid, and I don't give a flying fluck (yes I said "fluck" I'm not cursing) about this country;s right to free speech, if they are disturbing a funeral for a soldier, that to me doesn't seem like free speech. It's just making them put more grief on the family that lost their son/daughter for protecting us, and these retards, from terrorists/other miscellaneous attacks.
I find it funny that these people are making fun of the people that are actually protecting them and making us live an extra day in this country. I find that ironic to be exact.
These people are retards, and I don't care if that word offends anyone here, they are literally that, and what they do is horrible, vile, and any other word that is similar to those two words. I am just shocked that there has not yet been bullets fired towards these people with the way they protest.
"Thank God for 9/11..." Sickening. Just sickening...

None of us may like what they say, but they have a right to voice their opinions, just like the rest of us; we have the choice of ignoring them, or listening and doing something about it in a non-threatening manner (counter-protests). That baptist church may have a loud voice, but there are at least a thousand more voices who don't agree with them.

Sure they have free speech and whatnot, but do you think it's right for them to toss their children away if they dare to question or is against the whole belief? They do that, and I think it's wrong.
They also say that if anyone of them gets killed, they're going to Hell. Let's say someone got hit by a car during a protest, apparently they're going to Hell because they died.
I don't like what these people have to do to get their "voices" across the nation for people to realize that the "wraith of God" will soon strike us down because America is doomed. They claim that Bush is the reasoning behind this country's doomed crap and now they're saying it's Obama as well... They can't make up their minds.
Yeah, I have watched several Youtube clips of them and what they're like, these people are nothing but psychos. They claim that no one should judge but yet they judge people themselves by dissing the Jewish community, the Gay community, the Amish, and other people if it's against their religion.
I still think they're nothing but a cult, their leader is a afraid to say anything in interviews. These people I really hope, gets their rights taken away. Yeah, that's asking too much, but when you protest at a funeral of a fallen soldier, putting more grief and sorrow onto the families with no thought behind it other than saying that they have to thank God's work for having him dead and that he's rotting in Hell for what he did, that's not freedom of speech, that's just pure hatred. Soldiers are risking their lives to save this country, and unfortunately they're saving these people as well. These people could care less what our soldiers are doing overseas. As long as God hates them, hates the so-called "fags" and anyone against their church, they're going to remain happy.
They don't care what we think because our opinions is like dog crap. Something that's irritating but that not big of an issue to pick up at times. As long as their voice is louder than those arguing against them, it's fine for them. I cannot see how this is freedom of speech. They're haters, it's hatred, and what they do is utterly immoral, disgusting and downright wrong. And in their eyes, you, as well as most of the people here, are all going to Hell because of what we do. If we support the gays, we're going to Hell. If you are against this church in general, you're going to Hell. I cannot accept hearing people telling me to go in Hell because I support the gay community and feel that their words are wrong.
I can't stand these people, and my goodness it shows.

If that was the subject of this trial, then the judge dropped the ball; however, this was only about them protesting, so that's kind of irrelevant to the "freedom of speech" right that they do have. You don't have to like what they say, but that doesn't mean they should stop saying it, since you have the right to not listen to them.
The Constitution protects the peoples' right to voice their opinions on things that they do or do not support, something that should never be taken for granted. As Americans living in a free country, that right should not be taken away from them just because people do not want to hear their statements. That is how freedom of speech works.
You don't care what they think because to you, their opinions are like dog crap, something that's irritating, but really, it's not that big of an issue to pick up at times. As long as your voice is louder than theirs, it's fine for you and for those who agree with you. That's the truth and beauty of freedom of speech, the fact that it works both ways, and that they cannot prevent you from expressing your disdain in their actions.

It just boils my blood every time I hear about this group. I have family and friends in the military and I would go insane if somehow they have fallen in war and these people showed up.
I have so much respect for the Patriots though. Riding their bikes and standing in front of the Westboro... I don't think any family who lost someone in the war should see or hear these people at all at the funeral. It's not right, it's not right at all. To me, this doesn't even seem like it's a freedom of speech kind of thing. This is just making more of a hassle for these families to cope with during the loss of their relative. That's cruel, sickening and just immoral.
Yeah, the freedom of speech protects these people, but its certainly NOT what should be stated. This group, to me, is nothing but a hate group that doesn't care about your opinions. They're right and there's nothing you can do or say that will get them to change their minds. No family of fallen soldiers should ever witness these disgusting creatures. I can't even call them humans because it's just ridiculous with what they're doing. And it also bothers me that they get children involved with this too. There's a video showing a kid getting really hurt after getting smacked in the face with a plastic cup from some fast food joint. You think I like hearing that children are protesting with these people and getting hurt at the same time? No.
This isn't freedom of speech anymore with these people, it's just lashing out grief and hatred for people that don't deserve this at all. These families don't deserve that at all. Let them mourn their loss without hearing how it's God's fault and they're going straight to Hell all because they want to protect their country. I come from a really big patriotic family, I got a lot of people serving the military and or has served wars in the past, this is the last thing I want roaming around our country.
Understand this, IceBaby.
I hate these people. I hate them with every fibre of my being. And, if given the chance, I would send them to their god personally. Preferably in pieces.
But they have the right to express their hateful, stupid and WRONG opinions.
That's just how it works.
And you have the freedom to yell at them until your tonsils bleed.
It won't do any good. But you have that right.

Nail on the head here. The moment the government is legally able to deem an opinion as illegal is the moment we're no longer a free nation. I mean not to be dramatic but that's just how signficant the right to free speech is.

This. Even the most inflammatory rhetoric is apart of the democratic culture and rights that they afford. I deplore their message and I feel so sorry for those families who have to deal with a death and their idiotic and heartless rallies.

Icy, you're misunderstanding the concept of free speech here... It doesn't matter if you don't agree with them, it doesn't matter you think they're immoral, and it doesn't matter if you think that that's not something freedom of speech should protect, because they have every right to voice their opinions, just like you. The day that someone forces you to not say what you want to say is the day that you have lost your most important freedom. Denying these people the right to say their stupidities makes us all worry about our liberties and puts them in danger. The people in Libya protesting are being attacked for voicing their opinions; do not think that it is right to condemn others for taking advantage of a freedom that so many other people in the world do not have.
We don't have to agree with them, but we shouldn't force them to shut up in a country that prides itself on giving everyone a voice.

I agree with you, Crow. I absolutely agree with you.
I cannot think of anything more despicable than what these wastes of human life do at funerals.
And they should be eliminated from this Earth.
Y'know, if I somehow attained godlike power, the first thing I would do is destroy the planet and everyone on it.
Then myself.

If I attained godlike power I'd give everyone a genie and make a car that runs on air and bring back dodos and dinosaurs and ban all homework.
I'd like to think I'd be a benevolent god.
