Well of course it is, it's a movie, not connected to the source material. And it's a series that kicked off in the 90's, before they figured out how to embrace the cheesy premises and colorful costumes inherent to the hero genre like Raimi's Spidey or the Marvel Studios flicks.

The only way I can accept the film is if it is legitimately documented as a being set within an alternate universe, along with the rest of the film series.

Wow! That was diplomatic. No complaint. It's just so rare that any cross-media adaptation is directly related to the source. If you're looking for a written statement on status -- expect clarification that it is part of the canon. Source is king. Everything else is subject to determination. This is 101, universal, playground knowledge, regardless of what the franchise is. We're on a Mortal Kombat forum. There've been movies, TV, cartoons, comics etc. We know how this goes.
Meanwhile -- If anybody gives any credence to the notion that X-Men broke down the blockbuster, balls-out superhero movie barrier (and they probably should) -- you can just as readily assume it suffered for its trailblazing.
It only took a couple of years for Spider-man to laugh in the face of X-Men 2000's post-Matrix/late 90s attempts at conforming black pleather cool. X2 swiftly kicked its own predecessor to the curb by being the more sophisticated movie the first film wanted to be, but they remained victims of their own success. The visually unspectacular, self-serious pretzel of the X-Men movies was engineered to be overtaken by better, bolder versions.
The great tragedy of Days of Future Past will be if it Singer's gunshy, bland misery successfully supplants a better franchise. First Class was the overdue step forward the X-films had been waiting for. Not just a stay of execution for an increasingly obsolete team-up in an Avengers world, but a fresh, vibrant, colourful start for a series that had shied away from a great many of the things that made it dynamic.
There's no argument. First Class was progress. Much needed!
Interesting news: Singer Teases Possibility of Nightcrawler and Gambit in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’
Not so good for folks taking issue with perceived irregularities between the original films and First Class -- but good news for anyone hoping the 2000s don't overwhelm the new wave. More Nightcrawler lovins, too! [Amazing X-Men preview on pg3]

- Early First Look: CYCLOPS #1 Shows Off Young Cyclops and a Whole Lot of Corsair
Couldn't be less interested, but the Cult of Cyclops will be... pleased?
I don't know how those "people" feel about Corsair and Cyke in space.

- X-Men Producer Interested in Possible Mystique Solo Film, And More
The producer spoke with Entertainment Weekly, and expressed her desire for “taking that character into a solo film,” with regard to the mutant shapeshifter.
The site also says screenwriter Simon Kinberg (X-Men: First Class) wants to write the film, and “likes the idea” of a Gambit movie. Kinberg goes on to tell EW his love for Jennifer Lawrence’s version of the character, but feels she could use the spotlight in her own film, saying, “I feel like because [Lawrence] is in such a crowded ensemble, there’s so much opportunity if you were to follow her solo.”
Donner also tells the site that Gambit or Deadpool could use a solo film, noting, “There’s a lot of great characters.”
I don't know how much it's worth -- they've been lobbing potential spin-off characters & films into the air pretty much since '02/X2. Still, I'm sure that tickles the interest of plenty of folks.

- Channing Tatum confirmed to play Gambit by X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner [YouTube]
We're gonna have to start popping some of these out into their own threads at some point. Channing Tatum a go! They're talking solo films, but you've got to think they'll fall into a team flick (as usual). The question: Is he gonna find his way into Apocalypse, or is this a name character & actor to build the X-Force movie around?
Edit: Should've shopped for sources, I guess. Seems like the hot word on the beat is an Apocalypse intro. [If anyone wants to get an X-Men: Apocalypse thread going, go ahead!]:
- CHANNING TATUM GAMBIT Solo Film, APOCALYPSE Appearance Confirmed, AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Moving
"Multiple sources say that Tatum will get a stand-alone spinoff, with his version of Gambit being introduced in X-Men: Apocalypse," reports THR. "The stand-alone film is still in development, however, and no director has been attached."

- Every ‘X-Men’ Movie Ever, Ranked
Spoilers: Generation x isn't ranked. X-Men: Days of Future Past is. Proceed with caution if applicable.
Otherwise, a fine ranking of the work so far. Particularly impressed by their #1 choice, which I wouldn't necessarily expect every channel to embrace.

Good choice for the first place. I dare say - the best choice for the first place.
Brickwall as charismatic frenchman? Well, they could have hired an actual brickwall to play the part. It'll not make a difference.

I am appalled at the #1 choice.
I would have much rathered it went to #3, easily the best of all the films.
