Well I've looked around and I see no Euro '04 thread except that little rant no one is paying attention to at about mid-page. I think this event deserves it's own thread. Afterall it's only once every four years.
Onto business, today we saw the demise of England by France (who I'm pretty sure is in the lead right now) and a timid tie between Switzerland and Croatia.
Tomorrow we get Denmark v.s Italy and Sweden v.s Bulgaria. My predictions:
Italy > Denmark.
Bulgaria > Sweden.
Right now as it stands, France is in the lead with three points, followed closely by Greece (who pwned Portugal). Zinedine Zidane is the MVP with 2 points and I cheer on France. Go Zinedine. He has proven himself as one of the greatest in the world today by single handedly crushing England by scoring two goals in the record of two or so minutes with a free kick and penalty finale in injury time. w0w. Not only did he tie up the game for France he also won it for them.
So, now predict your victories for future games and cheer on your favourite team/country!
P.S France will win it all. If not them then Italy for sure.

As a life-long England fan, today was unbearable to watch. I bet a lot of u laughed and thougt it was hilarious, but honestly today was sooooooooo painful to watch. It is now 2nd in my 'Most heartbreaking football matches I've watched' list, coming in just behind England VS Germany, Euro '96 Seminfinal - The game was tied 1-1 and then in the penalty shootout, England lost 6-5 (it's first cus it was the semi final) But England can still win their next two matches and finish 2nd place, and if Greece win their group, then England vs Greece is a possibilty.
Now after my little rant 'bout England, I will tell you that either France, Netherlands or Italy will win Euro'04...

Ha. I know what you feel like, man. In '96 Yugoslavia was facing Germany aswell and we were winning by 1. Then all of a sudden the German's tie it and get another one near the end. It was crazy. And I was a little kid back then. LOL I think I cried.
And I'm sure England will bounce back. One loss isn't so ba. They were winning 90% of that match up until Zinedine went crazy mofo on their asses.

Well hopefully they'll bounce back, and progress to the knockout round. And I'm glad u know what it's like (I was also 10 when England lost to Germany in '96) cus watching the end today was HORRIBLE!! I remember watching Man United vs. Bayern Munich in the 1999 Champs League Final, and United doing excatly what France did today. And since I am a HUGE United fan, I thought it was great, I couldn't believe it! Now I know how they felt that day!

ahhh now that was a night to remember, i hated watching that match until the last 2mins, thank you mr solsjaer and mr sheringham, as for this year i'm still going for portugal and spain to get to round 2, and i thought the crotia and switzerland game was awful to watch, if they don't play a lot better than that it'll be England and France no problem, I'm going for Holland as my dark horse this year, if they get good draws they could avoid france and italy up to the semi's, who knows, but i'm still going for England, they have a habit of playing better in more important games, eg. france in the final instead of the 1st round. as a possible suprize for the tournament i think everyone has been surprized enough with greece beating portugal, and pretty comfortably at that.

Are they going to show any of these games on ESPN? I saw highlights from the Greece/Portugal game and updated scores but thats it. I want to see some games!
Not on espn, on Foxsports. one of the two is Live!!!!!
As for me and my friend were in pain when England scored, beautiful freekick by Beckham. We were down for the whole match until Barthez stopped the penalty kick!, Hopes were all lost agian untill Zidane shot the free kick at the 90 minutes.
Even more happy when they got the penalty kick.

Italy continued the trend of big teams underperforming. They drew with Denmark 0-0 today, after England and France (although an exciting match) both underperformed on Sunday. Croatia vs Switzerland was probably the least interesting of all the games so far, as they tied 0-0. Portugal suffered a huge upset when they lost to Greece 2-1 on Saturday and Spain never showed their best play in a tense 1-0 win over Russia. Sweden vs. Bulgaria has just kicked off..

Yeah, I have to agree. I expected more "action" from England and France.
Italy vs Denmark was a great match imo, unfortunatly, a draw like you said. I'm at the office now and I can't watch Sweden Vs Bulgaria.
Let me know the results asap please!
My prediction: Bulgaria will win.

England played the old Italian style of 'catennacio' (sp??) After getting the first goal, they were trying to sit back and defend the 1-0 win, and it doesn't work unless you're Italy in 1982. Eriksson, it didn't work against Brazil in 2002, it definately wasn't going to work agaist France (although it almost, almost DID!!) With such a talented team playing a defensive game, it seems such a waste, much like Italy today. Italy vs Demark was a good match though, but the Italians played a defensive game and got nowhere. I will update the Sweden vs Bulgaria match at halftime and fulltime...

It's halftime and the score is:
Sweden: 1 (Ljungberg '32min)
Bulgaria: 0
Sweden: 1 (Ljungberg '32min)
Bulgaria: 0

Calm down, they might have a chance to qualify if they don't screw up.

MaxDam Wrote: 5-0??? Lmao! What a surprise! I will watch it later supposing they will show it again later. Thanks for the updates. |

Yeah they still have a chance to come 2nd... And if they do, they'll (most likely) have France to face!!

Yeah you and MaxDam were a little off on the Swe. vs Bul. match, but today was a good day for Scandanavian football. Tommorow is Czech Rep vs Latvia (czech's will win 3-1) and the next BIG match: Germany vs Netherlands (2-2)
OMG!
I can't believe this. Sweden beat Bulgaria. 5-0. Sure, I knew Sweden have a very good team, but I never thought they'd win their opening game in Euro 2004 with 5-0. And yes, I'm extremely happy, but at the same time I'm worried. Chances are the rest of the games are not gonna go as good. But, damn. If they play like this against Italy... then I really think they have a chance of winning the whole thing.
PS. Wilhelmsson and Larsson owned.

czech republic 2 - 1 latvia oh well, the scoreline doesn't reflect the way the game was played but at the end of the day the standard of the team latvia were against caught up with them
