I thought it would be good to have a thread about physical fitness and health.
Perhaps we can share ideas/advice and goals wether its to lose weight, build muscle, and/or just be healthier.
I started going to a gym in January for my new years resolution and im already seeing good results.

Nice thread.
Working out is awesome. I started this year and I was easily able to gain 25 pounds or so within 2 semesters.
I wish I had a shirtless before image, but I was pretty skinny before working out.

oh la la! Nice pic.
I really want to get in shape this summer. My goal is to climb a 14er (a 14,000 ft. mountain), but I have a lot of conditioning to do. I want to lose about 20 lbs.
A good soultion for weight loss is to eat protein at every meal to balance blood sugar, and to eat breakfast to regulate metabolism. Some people don't like eating breakfast, but it's something you can train yourself to do. One of the hardest things to do is laying off the sugar.
My roomates tried the P90X diet, and it was seriously intense. I didn't even start it because I knew I wouldn't be able to finish it.

kingjolly - thats cool man, are you currently taking any supplements?
I take whey hydroslate immediately post workout because of its rapid absorbtion rate, and casein protein right before bedtime because its the slowest releasing protein and will provide your muscles with aminos while you sleep.
I also just take a multi-vitamin/mineral supplement, and pharmaceutical grade fish oil, and thats it. Just sticking with the basics.
I know 4 supplements may not seem like much but it gets expensive when you also have bills to pay and video games to buy.
StormChaser - wow good luck whenever you climb that mountain! thats sounds like it'll be a lot of fun.
And you're right, they say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Also the obvious stuff like stay away from sodas and fast-food restaurants. And im sure you already know to drink plenty of water.
Plus it'll be so easy to burn calories with summer coming up, you'll be fine.

No I dont. I just try to eat right. I try to make sure I'm on a high protein diet and keep my calorie intake high. I dont have anything against supplements. I have friends that take it and clam that it helps. They're just a bit expensive and inconvenient for me to get.
I currently started weight lifting again. Its been 3 weeks and much has improved already. Lost fat, gained more muscle. Currently I am taking Whey Protein and Creatine as my supplements. They work very well to help increase the number of pumps you can do, and your recovery is better the next day. I workout about 5 days a week. I think that's a good amount.
I run miles, lift weights, do these machines for my shoulders and back, and work out my abs. I need to figure out how to work out my legs.
This is going to be weird to say. I have no ass, so I went onto Google and typed "how to get a bigger butt." It's not that I want to fill out pants better or anything (I mean that'd be a cool plus) but honestly sitting for long amounts of time is uncomfortable. I'm so bony.
This was the first link. The name of the video is absolutely hilarious.

But I actually watched it and it seemed like it'd be good for my ass and legs. One day when I'm not exhausted from concerts and drinking, I will totally try out this routine.

Erick....if you want strong quads, hamstring, and ass look into squats and deadlifts. They're the best leg excercise and they work your whole body too. f you pursue them, be very careful though. Proper form is critical, if you dont want to mess up your knees and back.

My roomate was telling me about this one diet where you take this hormone pill that makes your body think it is pregnant, so it goes into "fetal survival mode" and supposively starts burning off all your fat to feed the "fetus". She asked me if I wanted to do this diet with her, and I said, "Umm... NO!" I don't really understand the logic behind this diet- pregnant women don't lose weight. They gain it. Every time I've been on birth control I've gained weight. Not to mention it just isn't safe to mess around with your hormones.

Eh, live topic.
Without being cocky, I'm very fit in terms of stamina/upper-body/core/legs. I'm a soccer player so generally I'm always going to be in good shape since I play all year round.
Winter is my 'off-season' if you call it, since there isn't as much soccer as there is in the summer, I tend to dedicate my team to the gym as much as I can, and put on some weight.
This winter I easily gained around 10 pounds of straight, lean muscle. I know a lot of proper workout techniques, had a strict schedule, and took a very very good weight gainer which helped me out A LOT. I also eat very healthy on a daily basis, which is why I have no problem in seeing results.
As it stands right now, soccer is starting to pretty much take over since it's summer now, so I'm not as dedicated to the gym as I was before. But I try to go atleast 3 times a week, as oppose to going 5 days a week during the winter.
My workout schedule was the following:
Monday: Chest & Biceps
Tuesday: Shoulders.
Wednesday: Legs/Abs
Thursday: Back/Lats/Triceps
Friday: Freestyle (Usually go into just work on biceps)
Also use this day to maybe make up a day I couldn't go to the gym during the week.

I've watched my boyfriend do P90X, that stuff is just ridiculous.
Though, as a conference champion cross country runner... I am out of shape... in some fashion.
I haven't had time to work out, but as soon as this semester is over, I'll finally have time to work out again. And since I have a membership at a gym, I can go there after work.
Normally, if I didn't have a job, I would do morning neighborhood runs around my old elementary school and through the neighborhood, hence the name. I love running, I think that running is the best thing to do. But after I met the love of my life, he has introduced me to weight lifting.
I find myself just lifting five-ten pound dumbbells as well as other weight lifting items while having him train me.
Swimming twenty laps in a pool also helps a lot as well. I do these, well, used to, all week. One day it'll be running, the next will be weight lifting, the next will be swimming and you rotate that around. It helps you explore working out all different parts of your body.
I am also tempted to try and do yoga as well during the summer, I am absolutely NOT flexible whatsoever, and I find that a problem, from a person who used to be in gymnastics... but that was a really long time ago and I quit because I could not do a cartwheel. But still, I am trying to do a lot more working out, because come on!!! It's almost summer! I want a beach bod!
So yeah, that's what I do for my workouts and will be doing them for a while.

I'd actually like to start exercising to back into shape myself. I'd like to ask those that do exercise on a regular basis if you have any tips for getting into running? It seems that when I try and get into running I get cramps in my calf, and shin splints even when I stretch.

Make sure you're drinking plenty of fluids (water or gatorade/powerade). Gatorade supposably works great for cramps.
Like when I watch an NBA or NFL game and a player cramps up, he'll go sit on the bench and guzzle a cup of gatorade.

Well, if you're out of shape, expect to get cramps.
Make sure you're wearing proper shoes, that matters as well. If you don't get running shoes, you're going to kill your ankles and feet. Believe me, I've had that happen before. Regular gym shoes are okay, but I prefer having actual running shoes.
Don't try to just go out running full blast, because you're going to just kill yourself. Always start out with a light job that has you jogging for one mile. Then after that, begin running at a good pace and well, there you go. That's how I started out.

Gatorade isn't recommended as you're working out. Water is most reccomended.
Gatorade you drink after an intense work-out/game to refuel your body with nutrients lost while sweating.
If you get cramps, the best way you can deal with them (proven), inhale and exhale, but properly, as many times necessary till they go away,

^^ yeah I prefer water myself. Its just that I always see professional athletes drink gatorade during games, so I figured it was fine as well.
