I recommend watching several of the season 1 episodes.

Don't like it? You rebel against the constantly growing herd? Fine by me.

Once upon a time, within the domain of a website known as 4chan.....
--October 2010--
There was unrest on the /co/ board of 4chan. A brand new My Little Pony cartoon was about to air, and a thread popped up discussing it and other Hasbro property reboots. Five people of /co/ decided to watch the first episode for laughs when it aired. They returned to /co/ with an interesting story to tell, the show didn't suck as they had expected. It was actually really good. These five got tripcodes and hung around /co/ for a while, discussing the show. Of these original five, only one is still known to be around.
/co/'s very first MLP general was so full of curious people of /co/, it reached bump and image limit, much to the surprise of everyone. Another thread was made, and that one was autosaged too. Youtube user Pensivepony (then Pensivepine) uploaded the first episode on Youtube. /co/-goers watched it, and loved it. More bronies were born. As more episodes came, so did more bronies. Some people began making fun of bronies, but most of them didn't care. It was also around that time that more drawfriends and writefriends began appearing. MLP generals became a constant sight on /co/, if there wasn't one on the front page, that simply meant the old one had only just reached autosage or image limit. Some animosity towards the bronies was brewing, but as long as they had a place to discuss the show, they didn't care.
--December 2010--
In a private chat between the original 5 bronies, they decided to see if they could spread the pony love to other parts of 4chan, namely the /b/ board. So they did, and started a simple pony thread on /b/. And much to everyone's surprise, it caught on. /b/ suddenly exploded with pony threads. More and more bronies were born the the /b/ pony threads. The /b/ pony threads took on a copypasta format, that went a little something like this:
----------
THIS IS THE OFFICIAL PONY THREAD, IF YOU SEE ANOTHER, DIRECT THEM HERE! (If there are multiple threads, the older thread should ideally become the "go to" thread, unless another thread is more active.)
Everyone equal, everyone loved. You didn't need a tripcode to be a brony, it was just for fun. Due to complaints, the links have been removed from the OP copypasta, but a brony will always be ready to help to anyone who asks!
Love, Tolerance, Friendship, and Kindness are the most important things a brony can have, let's spread some joy and post some ponies!
----------
Ponies were becoming the biggest thing on the internet and were the number one trending topic on KnowYourMeme.com. It was around this time that two pony-related chans were created: FiMchan, established by the bronies of 4chan's /co/ board, and Ponychan, established by the bronies of the /b/ board. Equestria Daily was also created around this time. At this point, the hatred towards bronies was really festering. Spammers attacked the /co/ and /b/ pony threads, but most bronies, as previously stated, did not care as long as they had a place to discuss the show.
--February 26th 2011--
On this day, a rogue /b/ mod placed an autoban filter on the word "pony". He then went to an active pony thread and banned everyone in the thread for a month, including the spammers. Bans started happening on /co/ too.
It was around this time that Ponychan started getting lots of users, as many /b/ronies wanted a place to go, but didn't use FiMchan due to some tension between the /co/ portion of the fanbase and the /b/ portion. Soon, ponies became okay on 4chan again, leading to more bronies being born. Today, bronies are undeniably a huge thing on the internet. MLP is still at the top list of trending topics at KnowYourMeme, and is the most viewed page. Equestria Daily has had over 20 million views. /co/ threads still reach autosage and image limit every time, /b/ still has pony threads many times a day. Ponychan gets a ton of traffic, mostly on its most popular board, /oat/.
The number of bronies is still growing to this day.
*Origin of bronies was taken from Teh Meme Wiki*
What makes MLP:FiM really special is the fandom, the community it has gathered, most bronies value love and tolerance. We will be there to give you advice about your troubles, to help lift your spirits up, or to just have a good time.

So I'm like really curious about this show, but I'm afraid it is going to trap me in it's colorful gaze. What should I do?!?!?
I mean hell I still watch shows like Adventure time, Chowder, Ben 10, Generator Rex and so on, what can I say I'm a kid at heart.

Well, I would say give it a try. I like Adventure Time and Ben 10 too, though I stopped watching them on my own 'cuz I just seem to have kicked watching TV.
Do not be afraid to be trapped in FiM's colorful gaze, you'll be trapped sooner or later, just like me. Unless you don't want to.
Linky to Episode 1
Linky to Episode 2
The first episode of season 1 is about this one unicorn pony, Twilight Sparkle, who is the personal student of Princess Celestia. Twilight Sparkle has read a book containing a prophecy about the return of the Mare in The Moon, Nightmare Moon. Which will happen in less than 2 days from the time Twilight reads the book. Upon Nightmare Moon's return, she will cause the land to become engulfed in eternal darkness. (And in turn, cause the end of the f***ing world!)
Episodes 1 and 2 are two parts to the same story of Nightmare Moon returning to the land of Equestria, they are more like an introduction to the show and its characters.

To be fair, I thought Powerpuff Girls was garbage too.

I would try to get you to watch a few more episodes, but if even the Powerpuff Girls weren't your type of show, then I guess MLP:FiM just isn't for you.

@Murcielago
Did you know Lauren Faust, storyboard artist, writer, director, and supervising director of the Powerpuff Girls, is also currently the creator, developer, and consulting producer of MLP:FiM?
----------
@J-spit
Did the show catch your interest? Judging by your Twilight Sparkle avatar, I'm assuming it did.

@Darkhound74
This is no black magic, my good sir. THIS IS SPARTA!!! But for real now, it seems the show has injected your brain with its colorful magic. Like it did to me, at first I was like "No, this cannot be!", just like you. But then after a few weeks, I embraced it.

@Unknown Yeah, I digs it. Twilight (not the movie) is my favorite, Rainbow Dash is cool, Pinky Pie is obnoxious, but somehow still likeable and I'm not sure about Apple or what's her face yet.
I want MOAR, but I need to know if asses get kicked in the future. I need violence! In my shows!

Yay, I actually assimilated someone into the herd!
Of course there is pwnage, not overly violent like MK, but still pwnage. I'll edit my post with linkys when I find some episodes.
EDIT:
Linky to episode 7
Linky to episode 17
The pwnage comes later in both episodes, near the end.

Do not worry, the episodes are more like "a day in the life" episodes (except for the first 2 episodes of season 1and 2), there won't be any real continuity issues. Only exceptions are 3 and 26, episode 12 with 17 and 18. But even then, you don't need the earlier episodes to know what is going on.

It's just a good show. There's no other justification. It's just that high quality and good natured that it's impossible not to love.
I'll frame it this way for a gaming audience. You know how when you play one of those games that just draws you in with its charm? Be it Mario, Final Fantasy, Kirby, or whatnot? Games that just make you feel good with their idealism and charm? That's My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic in a nutshell. That feeling you grew up knowing but not quite being able to define when you played that special game or saw that special movie when perhaps you were young and still able to feel the magic in fantasy worlds? Well, imagine how all of us 20-somethings felt when after all these years we stumbled onto a new cartoon that made us feel that again.

Rarity is definitely the best pony.

Twilight is my favorite pony, followed by Pinkie Pie.
