Top 5 Most and Least Improved Game Sequels
I do the occasional list of things that interest me... and games definitely do. I have a passion for games, but not all games are created equal. Sometimes a beloved game gets a lackluster sequel, while at other times bad games get incredible sequels. I'm here to share my list of the top 5 best and worst game sequels.
Let's start with the hall of shame first.
DEVIL MAY CRY 2
I'll be fair... I liked Devil May Cry 2. I'm probably in the minority though. But I'll concede that it was still an inferior game in many ways. DMC1 practically created a whole new action genre the likes of which still has repercussions in the industry. What did DMC2 bring to the table? ... nothing new. Unless you count a Diesel jeans brand tie-in. It even lacked the spark and edge of the first game. If the first game was a tasty burger from a mom and pop store, DMC2 is a dollar menu quarter-pounder from McDonald's. It'll do the job, but the flavor just isn't there.
PERFECT DARK ZERO
Ask any hardcore gamer from the N64 days and they'll wax poetic about the revolutionary Perfect Dark, the spiritual successor to the game that made console shooters not just viable but exemplary. Perfect Dark kept the spirit of Goldeneye while forging a brand new world, grew new gameplay, amazing multiplayer, and giving us a hot new female heroine. Then Perfect Dark Zero came years later and undid all of that. It was ugly, sloppy, and poorly designed with insufferable cutscenes, terrible animations, and none of the charm or wit of the original. Perfect Dark was a clean, sharp sword made by experts while Zero felt like a blunt, dull tool forged by amateurs. It also remains the ONLY game I regret buying.
SILENT HILL 4
Another game I genuinely like. In fact, I love Silent Hill 4... it was the last Silent Hill game I did genuinely love. But it's the first weak link in the series and the start of the inevitable slide down in quality. Mainly, it struggles because it gets rid of the strengths of the series (big world, flashlight, radio, exploration, strong story, likable main hero) and introduces the WORST parts of other survival horror games, things Silent Hill always ignored (item boxes, limited inventory space, zombies...) It felt like more of a Resident Evil game in the skin of a Silent Hill game, but it still did enough right to make me like it... just not enough to keep it from being the biggest drop in quality the franchise had ever seen.
DINO CRISIS 3
Pop quiz. What does Dino Crisis 3 have to do with the other Dino Crisis games? If you answered "not a damn thing", you're absolutely right! Apparently deciding to give it the Leprechaun movie treatment and move the game from a normal setting into space, the likes of Regina are left behind and weird controls, bad camera angles, and even bad dinosaur designs made this a sequel-in-name only. Beyond that, it effectively killed the thriving Dino Crisis series, and while Resident Evil is still going on, its sister series is practically dead in the water.
DRAGON AGE 2
Again, NOT a bad game... but a far cry from its predecessor. Unlike Bioware's other game, Mass Effect, which made huge improvements by leaps and bounds, Dragon Age 2 feels more like a regression, especially on the PC. Your skill tree is more limited, armor customization is more restrictive, combat lacks depth, and you spend almost the entire game in the same city instead of traveling the wide open world. Couple that with painfully repeating dungeons, a lackluster story, and a huge lack of variety in your party members compared to the original (I want a golem and a qunari teammate again, please!). It feels like a "lite" version of Dragon Age 1... one that feels like it was tailor-made for DLC to come in and fill the void rather than giving players a genuinely satisfying main game.
Okay. Done with that. Let's look at some positives now, shall we?
RED STEEL 2
The first Red Steel was a noble failure. It promised us grand one-to-one sword fighting, precision FPS shooting, and a dynamic world with the best graphics the humble Wii could offer. What we got instead was lackluster in every regard, from visuals to gameplay. Red Steel 2 is one of those rare sequels that has nothing to do with its predecessor and yet is better for it. With a bold, unique visual style, finely-tuned combat and gameplay, and a grand, memorable world to explore and interact with, this is arguably the biggest a game sequel has changed from its predecessor, and unlike the original, this one is absolutely worth your time if you're a Wii owner.
HALF-LIFE 2
The first Half-Life was a huge success. It helped put Valve on the map and led to their dominance as the premiere PC developer in the world just shy of Blizzard. But Half-Life 2 became their lasting masterpiece, the powerhouse PC game that revolutionized storytelling in games, altered the way people play FPS, and elevated Valve from a good developer to an outstanding developer. Half-Life 2 improves every single facet of the original Half-Life to the point that it's almost impossible to enjoy the original anymore after its sequel does everything it does, just better.
RESIDENT EVIL 4
Resident Evil is an odd franchise, one that has successfully popularized or created not just one genre, but two. Without RE1, survival horror games like Silent Hill and Dead Space wouldn't exist, but without RE4, over-the-shoulder shooter games like Gears of War, Prototype, and... Dead Space (again)... wouldn't exist. RE4 took the cumbersome, clunky, outdated mechanics of the old games and revolutionized them with one of the slickest, most stylish, and easy to use gameplay styles the medium had ever seen, then cast out nearly everything from the old game to give players new experiences left and right. If only RE5 had been as forward thinking...
TWO WORLDS 2
Did you play the first Two Worlds? You have my sympathies. It was regarded as terrible, almost unplayable. Some called it the worst RPG to ever grace the 360. But, they made a sequel. What a surprise. What's even more of a surprise is the sequel is... very damn good, actually. It's almost unbelievable that TW1 and TW2 came from the same people. TW2 fixes nearly everything the original did wrong; the graphics are lush, the voice acting much improved, the quests more varied, the classes more enjoyable to use, the monsters and enemies more diverse, the world bigger and more interesting, the framerate much better, and it all is wrapped up in a package that makes the entire experience more fun the more you put into the game. This game had no right to be made, especially after the first, but nobody expected it to be so good. Is it on par with Oblivion or the sure-to-be-big Skyrium? Probably not. But it's no less deserving of a try; with a wicked sense of humor, vast amounts of customization and skills, and more quests than some MMOs, Two Worlds 2 is a meaty sequel that leaves its predecessor shamed in the dust.
STREET FIGHTER II
Nobody remembers the original Street fighter. It was a bland game where you walked forward and beat some guys up. It wasn't even worth porting to any system that mattered and has never seen a console release. Ever. The same can't be said for its sequel, Street Fighter II, the game with more iterations than practically any other form of media on the planet. And for good reason; the game was a trendsetting, paving the way for the entire fighting game genre. Without Street Fighter II, there would be no Mortal Kombat. Without Mortal Kombat, there would be no ESRB. The ripple-effect. from this one game is so widespread that it's hard to fathom, but as a sequel it's gargantuan status as a legend so overshadows its predecessor that many have never even stopped to asked "wait, there was a Street Fighter 1?"

I'm gonna have to dispute the SH4 as being one of the least improved sequel. SH4 was the last good game of the series. I dare say, that if Team Silent had stuck toghether, they would have kept going in the direction SH4 was going and fans would have gotten used to it and I bet loved it just as much as the previous 3.
Anyway, since SH4 was the last truly enoyable game in the series, I would say Homecoming or Origins should really take that spot. lol we all know their unnecessary use of PH was an insult to fans everywhere... even if they did call it something else.

Bland? More like broken. It is difficult to perform special moves. It is not that I cannot perform them, but feels more like these commands only work they feel like it. It also does not help the controls are very stiff.
Also, the game did get a console release as "Fighting Street" on the TurboGFX and another on the PS2 on the compilation disc, "Capcom Classics Collection: Vol. 2."

The least improved? By far and large...
I bought a console for that game, too. Honorable mentions:
2. Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (Recycled setting with annoying busy-work puzzles; Nemesis was awesome, but that's really about it)
3. Every Fucking Sonic Game after the Dreamcast Generation
4. Castlevania 64
5. Final Fantasy V (though not even close to being the worst FF)
The most improved? Hmm...
2. Mortal Kombat II
3. Resident Evil 4
4. Mario Bros 3
5. Super Metroid

Yeah, I remember - and this must be going back some 15-odd years - seeing the original Street Fighter in Boots (kinda all-purpose store in Britain) for my Amiga. Looked it up:
http://www.mobygames.com/search/quick?q=street+fighter&x;=0&y;=0
and it appears it came out on a few systems, but you probably meant the traditional NES, Genesis, etc. platforms
---
Now, any list like this MUST include on the weak side:
Twisted Metal 3!
Take one of the most awesome games from the early days of the PSX, change companies (thx 989), and come out with...this. Talk about fall from grace.
As mentioned by statueofliberty, Tekken 4 was pretty wank in comparison to its predecessors.
I seem to remember Monkey Island 4 being a serious comedown after the great 1 & 2, and the cool, highly changed but fantastic 3.
Fifa 2002 also made rampant changes, and not for the better. Anyone else recall 'curling' the ball with L2 and R2?
I'd rather not either...
All of this is from my own experience.
Most improved:
1) Mortal Kombat (2011)
Holy shit. It's like it's a completely new game. One that actually doesn't suck. Only took them 18 years to get it right again.
2) Mortal Kombat II
Very few sequels improve on their original quite this much. Better graphics, better character designs, better tone, better Fatalities, better music, better sound, better everything.
3) Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal
Generally considered the best of the series, these two games made more contributions to the Pokemon world than we've seen in any sequel since.
4) Saints Row 2
Saints Row was a fun if extremely silly GTA clone. Saints Row 2, on the other hand, addressed many people's complaints that Grand Theft Auto IV had killed that series, by poising itself to be the spiritual successor to the GTA III games that people loved so much. Saints Row 2 may not be as critically acclaimed as GTAIV, but for fans of the GTA III games, Saints Row 2 is a badly needed continuation of the gameplay and whackiness that made GTA III, GTA: Vice City and GTA: San Andreas so beloved.
5) Tekken 3
Tekken 3 revolutionized the character designs and graphics capability of not only Tekken games, but all 3D fighters. If you compare Tekken 4 and Tekken 3, you will see slight graphical improvements. Compare Tekken 5 and 4, ditto. Tekken 6 and 5, ditto. But compare Tekken 2 and Tekken 3? They don't even look like the same game. Tekken 3 established the character designs that continue to this day.
Least improved:
1) Mortal Kombat 3
Every step forward in Mortal Kombat II was met by three steps backward in Mortal Kombat 3. Graphics were slightly better and some people enjoy the combo system but storyline, character design, tone, Fatalities, sound design, and new characters definitely took a huge hit in quality. It doesn't help that nearly every iteration of Mortal Kombat since MK3 got it even worse.
I don't have more than that. I'm sure there's other sequels that fucked up their series just as bad as MK3, but I can't think of any right now.

-Super Mario Brothers 2
How could Nintendo possibly top their best selling franchise? The number One reason why most people bought a Nintendo Entertainment System. Than came Doki Doki Panic I mean SMB2 . And wondered what the heck is this? No Goombas No Princess no Toad no nothing. What are these bird things why do Mario's eyes flicker like he's possessed?
-Mortal Kombat Armageddon
Not much to say but 64 characters must have been a nightmare for them to balance out. On top of Motor Kombat and Konquest mode. Deceptions Konquest was great and open. But Armageddon just seems like get to point A to Point B with some fights in the middle.
-Resident Evil 5
Since when was Chris taking steroids?

-Silent Hill 2
Now this is a game! If Metal Gear Solid 2 made me buy a PS2 than Silent Hill 2 kept my interest. Nothing new can be said about how great of a game this is. The player just gets sucked up in James's story. Getting sucked up in his drama with his late wife. Than the game throws in Maria whom reminds James of his wife. And Pyramid Head whose sole purpose is to torture and remind James just how messed up he is. One of my favorite parts is when James himself get's the Great Knife the player is subtly hinted to James really being Pyramid Head. And Maria dying over and over torturing James. And her Sexual advances toward James reminds him of how much he hated his sick wife. Silent Hill 2 is a work of art. A beautiful game and I would pop that in any day and enjoy it.
-Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake
Now were talking about great epic games! And It starts right at the intro. As soon as Zanzibar Breeze starts you can just feel how great the game is. It improved on Metal Gear in so many ways. The story laid the ground work for Metal Gear Solid. I still can't believe how they fit all that awesomeness in a MSX cartridge. The music alone sells it for me..
-Donkey Kong country 2 Diddy's Kong Quest
Admittedly I think I prefer DKC 3 over DK2. But DK2 improved over Donkey Kong Country that it can't be ignored. With the addition of the TEAM UP and Dixie Kongs abilities made for a whole new adventure. With addition to the all new LOST WORLD made for another dimension. With collecting the DK Hero Coins completing all the bonus levels and finally facing Captain K Rool. Then there is Toxic Tower
oh lord. But everybody remembers Target Terror and Rickety Race and just how great the music was.
Well thats it for now...

You're a boss. Thank you so much for reminding me about DK2's music, I used to absolutely love it. Rickety Race and Target Terror, one of the all time greatest soundtracks for games.
I will now go play DK2 and DK3 on my SNES for the next couple of weeks.
