DmC is my favorite Devil May Cry game by far. It really bothers me that people complain about such petty stuff like all the swearing or Dante's new look.

It's an origin story, his hair friggin' turns white by the end of the game. And it's the only one of the games to even have a decent story where Dante actually goes through character development and isn't just some generic Japanese ideal of an American cool guy whose only personality traits consist of "likes pizza, rock and roll, and cowboy pants".

I also wish Brutal Legend and Double Dragon Neon were more popular. I mean, those two aren't really hated, they have fandoms...I just wish they'd sold enough to warrant sequels.

A game i loved for the NES that never got hate because it was largely overlooked (therefore not much in the way of 'respect') was Low-G man. I never completed the damn thing but the playability for a game made completely out of 8-bit graphics was quirky and original, and completely ahead of its time. Also the randomness of the power-ups was so much fun.

A criminally overlooked game I must say.

But it's just so boooooooooooooring though. They turned Donte into a edgy douche for the sake of being an edgy douche. I like the old Dante for being entertaining and cool. I just can't like the new Donte for being "Ooooow muh feelings" "Fuck you lol" "I'm so deep love me".

Not saying the game is bad. It's decent, but fuck I hate Donte.

Nah man Capcom Dante was a fucking douche and I hated the series for that reason. Capcom largely (in my opinion) does incredible innovative shit with combat, level design, gameplay systems, and graphics but fucking screws the pooch when it comes to a good narrative and good character interaction and development. I'm sure people can find examples that offset this pattern but generally speaking, 'Capcom' and 'good storytelling' are rarely in the same sentence. I'm a bit biased though because I'm a fan of the studio Ninja Theory (they developed DmC) because they do PHENOMENAL work.

So with all that in mind, I'll go ahead and put Dragon's Dogma as one of my fav's that people hate/overlook. And yes, I realize that it's developed by Capcom (which is why the narrative is mediocre). However Grigori, the Red Dragon, is fucking EPIC. Best character in the game.

"For the sake of being an edgy douche" is not why they did it. They did it because it's the only characterization that actually makes sense given his backstory,

Both Dantes have roughly the same origin, orphaned by violence as a child, they spent the rest of their lives killing demons to survive or for revenge.

But despite the same circumstances, one came out like Raphael and the other came out like Michelangelo? I guess if Mikey's your favorite Ninja Turtle, fine, but he was never mine, and more importantly, one of these reactions to that lifestyle does not make sense. Where does Original Dante's personality COME from? What events in his life caused him to turn out not lonely and brooding like the Ninja Theory version? I sure as hell don't know, I bet you don't either, because Capcom never gave him any more backstory than "Sparda and Eva died when he was little...and now he runs a Ghostbusting agency! Now enough of that boring "information" stuff, check out this cool scene where gunfire makes a motorcycle float in the air!" (But then, at least he HAS an origin. Poor Nero, the main character of 4, didn't get one at all...and nobody seemed to mind when he swore and acted like an angsty jerk. Is that the secret to popularity? It's only okay to flip people off and be rude in every scene of your game if you DON'T have a good motivation?)

Or hey, maybe it does make sense to a Japanese writer to respond to childhood tragedy by becoming a shallow, one-note, cheesy joke-spouting machine, but that's the other problem i have with the older DMCs, I don't like stuff that's written like an Anime, because I'm not Japanese so I don't get their culture or their jokes or tropes, not to mention that the dialogue always sounds awkward because in the real world, people don't talk like a translation from one language to another.

I appreciate DmC not just because it has a story where the other DMCs do not, but also because it's Westernized.

Except video games don't HAVE to have a crazy realistic story or lore to make sense and to enjoy. Just look at the Super Mario franchise. A short, fat Italian plumber that goes chasing down a King of all turtles to save a Princess that happens to be the Princess of all mushroom people. Does Mario have a backstory to all of this? No he doesn't. Does anyone at this point care? Not that I've seen or heard no. I know I'm comparing a platformer to a hack n' slash, but the point is these are both Eastern made franchises that are wildly popular. I wouldn't want to have Nintendo throw their Mario game to another developer (A western one at that) and say "Hey, make this as serious and gritty as you can because reasons."

New Donte was just so damn try hard mode with his edge factor. Ninja Theory basically went "Errr what's cool guys? Smoking? Yeah! We'll have him smoke because cool people smoke. Ummm, cussing's pretty cool. Let's have him say fuck you after every word. What else....Ummm make him an asshole. Slap around some people he doesn't even know because that's pretty cool. Hurrr that soda will kill ya, now excuse me while I smoke my cigarettes xD."

Old Dante's one liners were at least clever and weren't as forced. That's how I feel about it. I'm not here to talk shit about western devs and praise eastern devs or anything of the sort, but when you just take a character like Dante and give him this makeover that no one wanted in the first place, it doesn't get taken so lightly. Me being one of those people.

Lemme stop ya right there. Most people don't play Mario games and games with cutscenes for the same reasons. Previous DMCs were in fact trying to have stories, they were just halfassed ones. DmC, on the other hand, puts its whole ass into narrative and character development. (That said, I know Nintendo has no reason to ever do it, but I've been championing the idea of a photorealistic survival-horror genre Mario game for YEARS because come on, the Mushroom Kingdom would look super fucked up and scary if it weren't cartoony in art style.)

Also "Donte" never smokes, that was removed after the first trailer. Did you play the actual game, or are you criticizing it by reputation alone?
And Old Dante's one-liners were NEVER clever. At best, they were corny.

I just don't see how there's character development in the new one when all I got from it was "I'm a rebel and I hate the law." The originals weren't great story wise, I'll give you that, but I just found old Dante way more entertaining.

To be honest with you I got about an hour into the game and dropped it. Prior to that I downloaded the demo from my 360 to give it a shot. I wasn't aware they dropped the smoking from the first trailer, and assumed he smoked throughout the game. So, I'll admit I was being ignorant there.

To each his own I guess. I thought he was a funny dude. I can't force you to like him, but I just don't see the new Donte the same way you do.

You dropped it after an hour and then want to shit on it's character development / story? C'mon man you didn't even stick around to see IF / HOW it developed. You came to it biased against it, let's be real.

I shit on the original DMC's but I played through every one. Bayonetta too.

Dark souls. No one likes that game that I know of. Its amazing and I've put in over a 100 hours with 4 different characters and still never beat it. I liked all the Devil May Cry games but never played the new one but I wouldnt mind playing it.

Dead island was pretty fun too but it got bad reviews.

Oh the onimusha games did not get enough attention. They were fucking amazing. Amazing cutscenes, gameplay, and I mean the SWORDS man the swords..

Will I pick it up again? Probably. I DID say the gameplay wasn't terrible, and I do like to play a game with good gameplay first and foremost. So, I'll look into going back into it. I'm not gonna hold my breath for anything though. I just couldn't stand to see what they have done to muh precious Dante.

Resident Evil 6 (mostly for mercenaries mode)

Mercenaries mode was always my favorite part about 4, 5, and 6.

I know 3 had it as well, but I've never finished 3.

Dark Souls/Demon Souls has gotten a lot of retroactive props but you're right, people RAGED against the punishing nature of that game at first.

Dead Island/RIptide is actually pretty fun though the first game launched with HUGE game breaking technical bugs/issues (like your save game constantly rolling back or deleting). There was some interesting core mechanic stuff going on though for sure. I played as Xian Mei in the first one and Purna in the second.

And I agree with you Onimusha needs a reboot. That series was fun as hell. I don't know why the developers aren't trying to release it to Western audiences anymore.

Duke Nukem. In general. Mind you it was unescapable for Duke Forever to turn out bad, but people forget that in the meantime there was a sleeve of pretty good platformer games with Duke, also, Duke3D is still fucking moody with it's genial level design.

Also: Shadow Warrior. Not the old, which was a pseudo-offensive mishmash of Asian stereotypes, but the new one. They rebooted the series and holy shit, was it ever done with finesse in design.

Simple, but very good game. Not too long too. Check it out, it flew under everyone's radar.
