What sort of community activities would you like to see at MKO? (UPDATED with new POLL 1/2/14)
What sort of community activities would you like to see at MKO? (UPDATED with new POLL 1/2/14)
I'm feeling more proactive than usual (coffee is awesome) so I'm curious if there's enough of a userbase left that'd be interested in more community ran activities/events beyond stuff like forum games. Kreate a Kharacter is super popular but is one of the few events that gets a big turnout. So for now I'm looking for feedback MKO. What activity would you like to see/participate in? All feedback is welcomed.

the create a character is fun and brings the community together so I wouldn't mind seeing create a stage/arena. use pictures, written description, bio, etc. maybe 2-3 limit think it would add some more variety to those contests/competitions. when the cac is not going on the cas is going on.
Maybe a streaming of various fighting games like injustice, Mortal Kombat using users from this site. maybe incorporate a stream of the day where there's a poll to cast which game you want to see played by the users here. at the end of the week there is a small tournament with streaming as well.
think this would be pretty cool.

So far the only suggestions have been a Kreate-A-Stage competition, is it that no one has any other ideas? Here, let me make it easier. Again multiple responses allowed:

I really am anticipating the next KAK tournament.
My character has already been completed and he's ready to go! As for the Kreate-A-Stage, it seems like a very good idea, but I'm not sure how many people would be able to participate. It requires a unique level of skill and creativity, especially to make it convincing for Mortal Kombat.
Still, I wouldn't mind seeing a KAS tournament, even if I'm not in it.

Thanks for taking the time to vote. You can vote multiple choices however so please don't limit yourself to one. In fact, in order for the poll to have a shot at reflecting anything close to accurate I need people to please check all boxes that would apply. I'll edit the poll posts to make it more clear.
As for the character in the sig it's a Marvel comics X-Men villain named Mojo.

I have an idea for when the next MK game. There's this thing we do on the PS forums called Game Nights. Where we have a set day of the week, and a set time of day we play that game. It called be called MK Kommunity Game Nights.
MK10 would be on both Playstation 4 and Xbox One, so there would have to be separate threads. It's kind of like the matchmaking threads we had for MK9, but having a set time is definitely better than just trying to find someone to play at various times.

I'd like to chime in here due to the results of the second poll thus far.
Online tournaments only work if the people who say they're going to participate actually participate. Guess why Fight Klub eventually went under.
I would be more than happy to revive Fight Klub and tailor it to Injustice/MK '11 or whatever other fighting games are desired, but the community needs to meet me halfway on this one. If it's what you guys want, let's discuss it further. I'm all ears for any ideas that you guys might have.

I'm certainly down for a semi-regular MK9 or Injustice tournament (maybe both). Honestly I'm skeptical about any of these suggestions as the active user base here is just so small and interest in playing the game has all but diminished.
For example just checking a few other MK sites login right now at 3 AM EST:
Mortal Kombat United - 337 users are online (25 members, 312 guests).
Test Your Might - 318 users online (members: 59, guests: 259)
Mortal Kombat Online - 2 users (including myself)

Mos and Mojo the thing is I just want something along the lines of other websites that show Evo footage and etc. Why not have the users on this site do a live stream of say Mortal Kombat with the users on here. Just make sure they actually can with schedules and whatnot. like if 1 person is on at 8.40 in CT and another user can go on at say 12.40 in another state they'd just figure out best solution. if they cant have like a back up player or whatnot.
just a suggestion.

Live streaming is very popular but people have to have stream equipment to do it. I agree that a streamed online tournament would be fun and it's pretty common on the sites I mentioned. My point though is that there's just so few active users at MKO anymore that it's all a bit of a pipe dream. When's the last time you saw 20+ users on at MKO? It just doesn't happen.

Plus, until an MK game implements a spectator feature, a streamed tournament simply can't happen. The stream technology is there with the PS4 and Xbox One.
Be sure to vote in the first ever forum message poll of MKO as well. It is now updated with broader options. "Poll: Fate of Mortal Kombat Online"

I'm the only one that checked 2d and 3d forums and i only do so rarely BECAUSE of so much inactivity. The others i chose were regulars.
I'd love to match against some people here but can't. No internet connection to Xbox.
Don't know what else i could suggest that hasn't already been mentioned.

Wow, the votes are in and (according to the results) the majority of users here basically come to MKO a Mortal Kombat fansite to discuss things that have nothing to do with Mortal Kombat. Is this shocking to some of you? I can't say I'm that surprised. There's just not much of an identity to the dwindling community anymore and I'd wager a lot of the 15-20 users only come here out of habit or to play the Pokemon thread game or the IRC Kombat game.
Also, there appears to be little to no interest in doing anything community driven beyond simple forum thread games. I honestly can't fault the site admins for having this sucker on life support.
EDIT: Also random statistic:
USERS ONLINE right now
Testyourmight.com - Total: 315 (members: 81, guests: 168, robots: 66)
Mortal Kombat United - 375 users are online (in the past 60 minutes) 45 members, 330 guests, 0 anonymous users .

For what it's worth, a lot of other sites use a much larger time threshold for their "Users Online" lists. We could increase ours to inflate the number, but that's kinda cheap, and most people should be able to recognize the difference. [I'm sure they don't]
Our forum community culture can be pretty lousy at times. No getting away from it. We've still got massive readership (always at the top) and some of our off-site areas are a lot brighter. This constant cycle of moaning and navel gazing isn't helping. Anything admin do or don't do is only going to effect things so much. Any site with a thriving community is benefitting from people who are putting some effort in, doing it for unselfish reasons, sticking with it and supporting fellow users and the site itself.
The site needs to do things to help empower and encourage users, and we're doing various things on different levels, but bottom line: Folks've gotta stop being negative and convincing themselves everywhere else is better and brighter. It's stupid. I get messages from other sites - even other staff - telling me they think we're doing good stuff. Stop putting so much energy into complaining and set about creating. Find what's good, not what sucks. This is the principle foundation MKO was founded upon.
We've got some cool stuff in the pipeline. We're spread thin but working hard. Seek it out. Support it. Share it. Comment on it. If you don't like it -- maybe you want to have a conversation about why.
Don't wait for someone else to do something you're interested in. Share your interests. Share your opinions. Embrace what's good and mutual in the MKO community. Stop talking about what's not there. I don't want 30 people PMing me to tell me they don't think anyone else is around. YES! THAT HAPPENS! STOP IT! Some of the conclusions people are reaching are so sick and paranoid and strange and counter-productive!
You're gonna be okay! Lighten up!
Want a poll? Let's vote on whether or not moaning should be banned from the site for a while! Or come up with some wacky forum game. I don't care! Just get involved and have some freaking fun!

I see where your coming from Mick but honestly most of my personal interest lies in the actual playing of MK9 and Injustice right now and perhaps doing actual interactive things beyond a wacky thread game. I'm not trying to be negative, just put things in context when I post those stats. EDIT:...
There's so little transparency from the site admins though that there's barely any relationship or insight into anything going on.
That's the thing though, in order for that to become a tangible thing (the "sticking with it" and "supporting users") there has to be some form of definitive participation/interest. Like Moeseph pointed out a while back, what's the point in trying to host weekly online tournaments with MK/Injustice if no one gives a shit?
I'm trying to be positive and proactive here by even bringing this "where are we as a community" type of discussion to the table in hopes of improvement, not simply to complain.

1. For shame. MK fandom is discussing community events and no one has brought up cake decorating competition before I got here? What the ever-lovin', blue-eyed fuck? Did Cooking With Scorpion not touch all our lives?
2.
Unless your interests are character of the week or drivin' by. Then you can fuck right off.

Who really cares? Customers don't go behind the counter.
Sometimes people PM me or grab me on IRC to ask questions and that's okay. I usually give them pretty straight answers (or explain in some fashion that it's not appropriate for me to answer in full). If you want to know a bit more about a particular interest or concern, that's how you do it. You're never going to get a running dialogue of everything -- good or bad -- going on with staff. That's the nature of it. In the last 800 days I've worked on MKO related items an obscene number of days. Sometimes things work, other times they don't. We need the community to focus on the things that do and to focus on the things the community is doing. We'll all be better for it.
Edit: If there's a good chance someone is going to froth at the mouth like a lunatic, I'm probably less likely to talk to them.

This is it's own answer. Do it. Stick with it.

If nobody tries at all then it's guaranteed nobody gives a shit. You can't sit around moaning and expect it to fall into your lap. Yes - there are sometimes difficulties. Some things aren't going to work straight away, others won't work at all. Look for the things that do work. Engage in the simple stuff and work toward more complicated things.
All forums are democracies to an extent and there's no point being so terrified of it that you stand on opposite sides of the dance hall too shy to ask to dance. [And believe me, when you have an overview of things -- or even just a bunch of people PMing you how they're worried nobody is posting -- you know how much that's the case.] Our problem isn't nobody giving a shit. It's a whole bunch of people not giving a shit (or at least being very scared and silly).
Trying to convince people numbers are terrible and the grass is greener on the other side isn't going to help. Moaning and groaning and ignoring other threads isn't going to help. Talking about the possibility of doing something is - frankly: not going to help. Doing stuff helps.
Obviously nobody expects everyone to be interested in everything, but y'know. Start with chasing the bits that do interest you. Challenge the differences you find in other users, embrace the similarities. Accept and respect everyone. Engage. The point in hosting things is that you are interested.

Keep your interests in one relevant thread. If there's an existing thread - use it. Pretty standard stuff.
So now I'm just "moaning and groaning" and trying to paint a picture of how the "grass is greener on the other side"? I posted user numbers to put it into context, not to "sway users". Whatever man. I'm tired of slamming my head against a brickwall here.

Moaning and groaning is what you're doing now. Don't be so precious! We're talking about a problem with community culture in general terms. Nobody's going to hurt you. Nobody's going to blame you for the ills of the entire world. Even if they do -- that's not so bad. But they're not.
If I take you at your word: you care.
If I look closer: you care enough to - right now - post about the problem.
Care enough to post about something else you're interested in. Or reply to something. Or tell a friend about something. Anything! And not just you! Any one who's reading this! This is the "brick wall" to be worried about. Hysterics won't help. This is a safe space.

Yeah. Come on, Mojo, get involved. If you really want to spur activity on the boards you should stop whining and, for example, make a post trying to get folks involved in forum activities and - oh wait holy shit.
