When you find out someone does drugs does your opinion of them change?
I'm just curious. It seems that I know a lot of people who will think highly of somebody, but when they find out that person has used acid or coke in the past or smokes pot in the present, their opinion changes and this new information changes how they felt about that person drastically. Now they're worried about getting close or trusting them because they're dangerous with a terrible life style.
I'm just interested to hear how you guys react to hearing that a "seemingly nice" person has messed around with some drugs. Do you immediately make the decision to cut them out of your life? Do you think they need rehab? Do you lose respect for them? Is it that big of a deal for you?

Considering my entire family except me have been doing drugs for my entire life, no, my opinion doesn't really change.
I hate pot, though. I don't have anything against people who smoke it, but it smells so bad... Like burnt ass and cat pee. So, when someone around me starts smoking I'll bitch about it until they go do it outside, hehehe... Makes my head hurt. That, and I tend to have very physical reactions to drugs. Being around certain things, even cigarettes, for too long makes me sick, literally. So, I avoid smoking anything for self preservation's sake.
I wouldn't think just any recreational drug user needed to go to rehab, but I do have very strong feelings about people who have fallen into the Amy Winehouse category.

Eh. I'm a pot man and my (new) dad has admitted to me that he once tried cocaine. My thing is, as long as you don't let it affect your life in a negative way, go do whatever makes u feel good, baybeh.

I used to hate people who drank and smoked.
Than I tried it. Smoking (weed) is great it's the one time I can be at peace and just chill.
Drinking is fun and I'm not like one of those crazy drink before noon guys.
I'm iffy with people on crack and cocaine. But as long as you can control yourself I'll be fine with them.

I don't care if people do drugs, but I do care when it becomes an addiction. I know plenty of people the smoke pot, and it doesn't change my opinion of them, it's just another piece of the puzzle of who that person is.
However when it becomes an addiction, when the person starts putting a vice before everyone in their life, it does change my opinion of them. Addicts are often portrayed as victims. The people they lie and steal from are victims. Addicts are often portrayed as 'ill'. Cancer is an illness, ALS is an illness, addiction is self inflicted and I really have no sympathy for it.
So long story short, don't care if people do drugs, but if I find out you've been lying and stealing to support your habit, then yes my opinion of that person changes dramatically for the worse. Life is about choices and having the courage to stand behind them. Addicts like to pretend the vice is making the choice for them, and they're wrong.

i really wouldnt care, i'll only care if the following applies:
1) The girl i like smokes weed.
2) If you're just gonna be "OMGZ I NEEDZ ME SOME FUCKING (insert Drug here)"

I dont really care if you do them or not. If I thought you were a chill person to be around before then most likely I still think that. To me it dont matter one way or another. Just dont try and get me to do it, nor be askin for money so you can do it.

Yeah, cigarettes suck. And so many pretty girls smoke them.
No I don't cut people out of my life if I find out they do drugs, what kind of friend or family member would I be if I just shunned them forever?
I'm not opposed to drug use because of my libertarian principles of "if you're not hurting anybody, be yourself and have fun".
With that said however, I don't do drugs and I have a fear of not being in control of myself, so yeah, not to mention I've had to deal with enough drug addicts who let it control their lives and I'm not a fan.
I am aware that some don't and just use stuff casually and not often though.
I'm not sure how I feel about Cocaine and crystal meth, out of all the drugs, these two make me very worried, not in an I'm judging you way, but because of how dangerous I find those two drugs.
It's not like when I find out someone I care about does drugs I dislike them or don't treat them the same, but when I learn something new about someone and this is for other stuff besides drugs, like religion, sexual orientation, political ideology etc. I examine them in a new context, not because I'm judging them, but because I'm getting a bigger picture of who they are as human beings and I find it fascinating.
The TL;DR version, if there was a bill that legalized marijuana, I would support it for my smoking brothers and sisters

I drink, I smoke pot, I'm all for psychedelics. But as people have said, when someone is weak enough to become addicted or dependent, that says a lot about their character. I'd have a hard time respecting that.
I'd probably sooner associate with a weed smoker than a cigarette smoker. Nasty.

Nice to meet you.
It's not a big deal to me but it largely depends on:
A. If we're talking about someone's past.
B. What kind of drugs we're talking about.
C. If currently using, how often?
D. Are they parents?
Even then it's not about looking down at someone as much as it is figuring out if they have an abuse problem or not. I mean if you're a 9-5 working parent of two young kids and every once and a while you smoke a joint with the wife then...well...that's one thing. If however, you find yourself snorting cocaine off of your child's forehead then I have a bit of a problem with that.

It depends on the context. I'll openly admitt I've taken ecstasy and smoked weed before but in the former's case it's only at festivals and in the later's case it's only seldomly. I have no issue with people taking drugs so long as they're intake of drugs isn't causing any damage to their personal relationships.
I recently lost a very good friend of mine, my best friend of 5 years, but he didn't die from drugs. In fact, he's not even dead. He's just become a person so unrecognisable with his dependancy on weed, ketamine and ecstasy that I don't even know the man anymore. My outlook on him has changed completely.

To me, honestly, its what you do with it. I may not like drugs whatsoever, I despise cigarettes, yet I am admitting in trying Hookah and actually liking it as long as my throat doesn't hurt, but it's what you choose to do with your body. I cannot force you to stop what you're doing, but I can tell you to not be near me when you light one up because I don't want to inhale that stuff.
And mind people, there's a huge difference between smoking a cigarette and smoking at a hookah bar in case people don't know it or whatever. I'm willing to back myself up here and not sound like a hypocrite because neither are the same.
Yet, if you are using the substance in an abusive way, then yes, I will step in and try to help but I doubt it'll go anywhere depending on how long the abuse is going on for.

I myself have never tried drugs and don't plan on it, just a personal choice. But I have had plenty of friends who were big time stoners and well, they're still my friends.

Work for a living, or be going to school.
Take care of your friends and family.
Stay out of trouble.
Do all that and I don't care if you indulge. Contribute positively to the world and you've done your job.
However if your a punk kid not going school cause your high, or if your dealing to kids, or if your on welfare. Then my opinion of you isn't very good to start with.
COnversly there are some sober clean people that I think suck as well. Usually get along better with stoners.

This. Also, it affects you even more for being a passive smoker.
