I just came across this interesting article about the Xbox One IGN Xbox One hardware. It gives a better justification about the systems always on connectivity and cloud service, that really wasn't explained much during E3. From my understanding, the system is designed to offload CPU & GPU processes to the cloud service. Basically while the systems hardware maybe limited, the cloud processing is unlimited and can actually grow as MS adds more servers. It sounds really promising, where console up until now where basically limited by their hardware, but now MS is developing a system that can grow and increase its performance as the system ages.

Its official now: Xbox One policy change
An Internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games. After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc-based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24-hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.
Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today. There will be no limitations to using and sharing games; it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.
In addition to buying a disc from a retailer, you can also download games from Xbox Live on day of release. If you choose to download your games, you will be able to play them offline just like you do today. Xbox One games will be playable on any Xbox One console--there will be no regional restrictions.
"We appreciate your passion, support and willingness to challenge the assumptions of digital licensing and connectivity," Mattrick said. "While we believe that the majority of people will play games online and access the cloud for both games and entertainment, we will give consumers the choice of both physical and digital content. We have listened and we have heard loud and clear from your feedback that you want the best of both worlds."
It sounds like you will still need an online connection to go through the initial setup, but after that its all clear. No internet required to play games. There will also be no region lock on the system.

I'm a Sony and Nintendo fan through and through but I took no pleasure in the tears of MS fans.
Glad they reversed the decision, this is a demonstration of the power of the consumer.

Well if they had left it alone in the first place they wouldn't have had to change it. You don't fuck with consumer policy.

Good, now if they release a good Banjo Kazooie I may actually buy an Xbox One.

Still doesn't change MY mind, but that's my preference. Yes, now that Microsoft has listened to the consumers , coming out and saying "We screwed up. You were right," I feel that owning an XBOX One may be something in my future. Of course, after I get a PS4. The $100 price drop and great game selection do most of that. Of course, the XBOX One has great games, too, and many great PS4 games are over on XB1 now.
Hell, the way people fight over gaming, I might just go ahead and completely switch to P.C gaming, with all the emulators and FREE games.

I am glad they changed policies. Now I will get an Xbox One without a guilty conscience. ^^
I am still a Playstation guy though. It is my preferred console and I am getting a PS4 as well, whenever I can afford it.

Doesn't change my mind. Microsoft showed its true colors at E3 and all it takes is a ToS update down the road to put the DRM back in.

I can definitely see that happening.

I don't think they'll put it back in since they are claiming that after the initial online setup, you don't ever have to connect again. Anything that would conflict with that after a console had been purchased would be grounds for some serious problems for Microsoft, and I doubt they'd risk anymore bad PR at this point.
I don't think we'll see this stuff again until next, next Gen. Enjoy your Xbox 360 2 folks! I know I'll be getting one at some point. Killer Instinct 3, here I come!

"Finally, Whitten could not give any reassurance that Microsoft will not change its policies in the future."
Yeah, fuck Xbox One.

An interesting note about these changes: Xbox One changes
Kotaku - Xbox One: 1 time connection
Apparently because of this late change in policy, the system will still ship with the functionality as it was intended. As soon as the system is first set up there will be a mandatory update to remove all the restrictions. Which explains why you need to have an internet connection for the initial set-up.

I think they plan to bring it back at a later date. One of the articles I read (not sure which one, might have been kotaku) they said, Family share won't be available at launch. The reason they are taking it away is because it was originally tied to the cloud library. Since they are doing away with it, it needs to be reworked.

But you can't have it without DRM, so from your post it sounds like we're headed back to what they were saying at E3.

the changed policy sounds like a good thing, initially, i'd be wary that they could change it later. However i'm not buying any next-gen anything since i haven't learned HOW TO SHIT MONEY. I'm amazed that anyone can afford these prices, i've bought all my consoles heavily discounted from friends or whatever.

Microsoft plans to be a Tokyo Game Show to display XB1. Will it change your mind? Will it change my mind? Will they have anything interesting AND positive for tehir new cnsole?
Probably not.
