I don't know if a thread of this has been made so forgive me if it has.

But I just don't see how Sub and Batman are all that similar. Sure they're both good guys and they know martial arts, but that's about all it comes down to. Wouldn't it make more sense to have Sub-Zero fight Mr. Freeze since he's a villain with like the same power? I think that Liu Kang or Kung Lao would be a bit closer to Batman.

To be honest their the only chars that kinda feel right together their both good guys and kind have of have the same views and morals and they just feel right. Also I dont think any of the other characters look good together. BTW I just noticed something in the trailer Sub-Zero does not have his medallion on so it might be another Sub-zero I think that their is more than one.

Maybe it's just a costume change? But that is an interesting theory.

Sub-Zero is a ninja whose brother was murdered, setting the course his life would take: he uses his great resources to protect the world from evil. He had a protegé (Frost) who refused to learn self-control, got herself killed, and came back as an enemy.

Batman is a ninja whose parents were murdered, setting the course his life would take: he uses his great resources to protect the world from evil. He has had several protegés, one of whom (the second Robin, Jason Todd) refused to learn self-control, got himself killed, and came back as an enemy.

To be honest, there aren't really good counterparts from MK to DC. The only real counterpart to Batman would be Stryker, because they both would lack any super-powered special moves. And I hope to the Flying Spaghetti Monster that Stryker's not in the game.

Similarly, like was already said, Sub-Zero's counterpart is probably Mr. Freeze - and I doubt he'll make it into the game either.

There are always similarities, but due to the complexity of both MK and DC characters sometimes there's more than one.

Example, Shang Tsung is like Martian Manhunter; they can both shapeshift and read minds/souls. But Shang Tsung is also kind of like Raz Al Ghul, both seek immortality and have used sorcery and magic to prolong their lives thus far.

I don't think it would make sense to include 2 characters with the same exact powers in this game though. So Mr. Freeze is out. Fighting games are boring when you have 'clone' characters, which is why for characters like Jarek who used to have only Kano's moves in MK4 they gave him all new ones for MKA.

I think with the paring of Batman and Sub-Zero, they're looking at a deeper parallel than merely their powers.

Sure, Mr. Freeze also shoots ice....but how else does he parallel Sub-Zero? Sub-Zero is a stoic warrior who adheres to his own code of honor and morals. A "ninja" who has overcome betrayal and turmoil to become a heroic and powerful leader. He has come to be seen as sort of the "other hero" of Mortal Kombat. A darker contrast to the more "pure" main hero, Liu Kang.
Mr. Freeze is a scientist who had a freak accident and became a moody, low-level villain.

In terms of personality and essence, Sub-Zero and Batman are actually fairly close.

Are Sub-Zero and Batman similar in some ways? Yes. Are they counterparts? No.

Why the hell two good guys are even beating each other up makes no sense.... but then again, I never complained about Johnny Cage smacking Sonya around either.

I think a better "counterpart" to Sub-Zero would be Azrael (I swear you're going to hear me mention this guy many times before the game ships) because there backgrounds are vastly more paralleled. Both are ex-assassins trained to kill by their respective secretive organizations whose mantle is passed down from generation to generation, often father-to-son. Both of whom rejected the old ways of their clans, choose to side with good, and were hunted down, while both struggled against their own dark training and destinies. Ultimately, both became fighters for good, though in different ways.

That and maybe I just want to see Azrael's flaming blades in a clash with Sub-Zero's ice sword. Might just be me.

Seriously. I don't even know who Azrael is and I think he's a better match for Sub-Zero.

I think the reason Batman was chosen for Sub-Zero is because of how well he handled himself against Mr. Freeze in Batman & Robin the movie, and Batman Dark Tomorrow, the game. I assume that's why Ed found Batman formidable. Also because of his Iconic status. Not to mention as like Mr. Freeze & Sub-Zero maybe cold hearted, but has a soft spot for Frost, as Mr. Freeze did for his wife. Not basing this off much, but you can see the similarities in the two.

If they’re sane, nothing should be taken from Batman and Robin, ever.

That movie made MK Annihilation look like pure gold by comparison.

Here’s a few thoughts on counterparts

Batman & Sub-Zero parrallels are nailed quite well but so are Azrael's. The difference with Azrael and Sub though, it's not just for father to son, it's for every Cryomancer really. Sub-Zero's brother is named well...Sub-Zero. Another Batmeng and Subby parrellel is that both refuse to kill. Well, according to Subby's MK2 background we know that.

They have some similarities but also have differences, such as one having powers, the other doesn't. Both share martial arts at high level etc

I'd say Liu Kang is more accurate with Sub though with the martial art concept.
