For me, Krimson's biggest crime was being a bland character who tried to take credit for a bit too much. It's just too presumptuous to ascribe a detail as iconic as Kano's cybernetic eye to a character so new, and otherwise uninvolving. This was definitely a character whose ending would've been much better served focusing on character-specific plot points, rather than the 'defeated Shao Kahn' model. It also goes without saying that this was one of the many characters guilty of a completely pointless association with Quan Chi.

Really, I think the name has to be considered a bit of a drawback when the series has just added Skarlet to the canon, as well. I think when you borrow a noun for a character's name, it needs to be individual, and perferably justified by some sort of semi-artful relation. There didn't seem to be any thematic or character-based reason for the name, which would be a drawback even without Skarlet in the mix.

As there's nothing that particularly jumps out about Skarlet, I'd certainly recommend strating from scratch with something new. I'd encourage you to think more carefully about the boasts of the character and how they earn them. I think MK itself is quite guilty of building characters around non-existent reputations, but that doesn't really excuse it. I'd tone down the credentials a little bit, avoid touching on key canon, and maybe be a little bit less obvious with the 'I'm such a bad ass' characteristics.

I would recommend trying to paint with a more vivid theme or starting point that gives a sense of unmistakable identity to the character. I would also try to avoid making arbitrary relationships with other characters. You might like to find a corner of the MK universe that your character is comfortable in, and make that the area of development before trying to branch out into other areas. That isn't an unimpeachable rule to live by, but it's something you might like to consider.

If you go back to the MK criminal underworld, it might be an idea to try to isolate the specific role your character serves. You might also like to try to think of some sort of super-villain style gimmick, but that's only one way to go about it. We know there are comic book style villains and more basic crooks in the Black Dragon and rival clans, there is still a lot of room to explore and develop within that area of the series. That said, I'd encourage you follow any idea that strikes you, and not necessarily stay anchored to the crime corner of things.

Hell I might bring Tyron Magnum back as well with a few tweaks. But I've also been thinking about developing a story for a character mentioned in MK but never materialized. Idk if it's against the rules but I'll try.

Hey Mick, if I do bring Tyron back do you have any ideas on what should be changed about him? I got till December to figure It out but I'm drawing a blank right now.

Thank you for your response! When I was creating her, I wanted to attempt to make her to fit like any other character within MK both aesthetically and in other aspects. I see how her connections to Kano, Quan Chi, et cetera could be seen as forced, in a way.

Chances of me of entering another character are looking higher. I just need some inspiration..

Anyway, chances are looking good for a winter tournament and JAX might be willing to contribute a prize again, so don't lose all hope of getting your character drawn. Volcano Baby was a pretty solid entry; with some streamlining in the story and a little more distinction in some of his specials, I wouldn't be surprised to see him go far again.

And you seem to understand that it was a dream of mine for atleast 4 years for jax007 (who I see as an ELITE level artist maybe one of my idols) to do a drawing of Ekimaru ,if that happened I would print it and have it on a bigass frame in my room!By the time of the next contest my drawing and painting skills will be elivated ,and I will re-enter Ekimaru all new and improved!

By the way Kruor is savage I like every single aspect of him( the latin wordplay is rather smart,did you know that I used a similar word play from japanese for Ekimaru's name :D )

I'd love to get any feedback or reveiws on Casilde if anyone's got the time. I won't be entering her for the next contest as I have two more characters to choose from and develop, but I'd love to hear some more in-depth analysis of what would improve her and what you liked :)

Alright, guys. Some feedback, but I'm not doing your homework for you.


As far as KAK contest goes, it has to be an original creation, so pre-existing unused MK characters are out of the running, as well they should be. In the grand tradition of any creative medium, I don't think you'd be disqualified for making an artful character who's analagous to another one, though. It'd be a heckuva gamble to try that with a lesser known figure, though.

On the whole, something I thought the contest was really missing was a strong human presence. We're back in the territory of MK1-MK3 with the current game and I would've hoped that would inspire more thinking in that direction, instead of (painfully) nonsensical Chaosrealm fan-fics and more Edenian slash-fic.

I think you've got a strong basic concept, but the stuff that's hung on it let you down as the rounds went on. I gather the military backstory was to try to give him an MK hook and a reason to interact with Sonya in his ending, but I think it was just unnecessary. When you combine that to backstory involving Johnny Cage, I think the character was just stretched too far across the spectrum. I would rather see two seperate characters there -- a military grappler, and an MMA fighter. Similarly, the exchange with Mavado was pretty loose. You might have been better trying to make use of Kobra -- a character who is really quite okay, but never got put over.

I think you have to accept that a character like this enters MK like a lot of the MK3 creations (and Johnny Cage) -- he's a human perspective confronting the supernatural of MK. That means trying to be comfortable with a design and character that is quite human and not distinct to the MK-specific style, or even necessarily intrinsically linked to existing canon. The Anderson Silver reference is fine, but I might consider giving Magnum more of a Brock Lesnar type physique, just to give it a more threatening visual. Most of the moves you described can still work from there, but I'd lose the Rottweiler nickname, for now. You could probably make a more specific, scrappy type fighter out of the Rottweiler motif, rather than sending mixed messages with this one. Really, the guy already has a cartoon sounding name, and I think 'Magnum' is where you could build your theme.

Basically, I think the character just needs to be streamlined and pared down. I don't know if I'd be quite as specific as you have been, but building him up as one of the world's greatest MMA fighters is probably backstory enough. I think a better way to get him into the world of MK is either through being thrust into circumstance -- ie; MK3 -- or the tried and true method of a dominant fighter seeking challenge. Kobra could be the transition from the world of competition fighting, to more outlandish MK things. Perhaps they're enemies -- or perhaps they're friends. Then you go from there.

Like I said earlier, it's cool to have plenty of meat in the bio, but I think there's a lot to be said for just establishing the character in the bio. Then use the ending to tell their story in the MK world. That might be something you take on board moving forward.

But like I did with my character, I added more info on the character in his appearance/primary costume. Like the 'seeing in the dark as if it was still day'.

But as the tournament has proved too, is that even a bio with only a few lines in it can get voted over a bio that has 20+ lines... I should know. Right guys!?
