Just host a competition like u said, except before someone enters they have to submit a previous fake to show what "talent" they have. That way yu could filter out the sucky ones first, while giving encouragement to the good fake makers and alllowing them to go thrugh to the next level where they come up with a new original fake. I think that might draw some of the 'veterans' back because they know they would be competing with the best.

Wow. It's been so long since I posted here, I actually had to go look up some year-old threads just to remember my user name. Anyway, I think that once we start ramping up to the next MK fighting game next year, the good artists will come back. I guess Shaolin Monks wasn't enough to inspire most of the artists. Not enough new stuff in the game, I guess.

I don't think an impending NEW MK release will make that much difference. We will just get more 10yr-old looking crap based on it too.
I personally have switched from 2d art to 3d art completetly. I have done so many 2D MK stages into full 3D its insane, but at this point I don't feel the need to post shots of them all over this board, as 3D environments are best experienced interactively, not viewed from a single meaningless screenshot. (I am nearing the completion of all the MK1 stages and have done some MK2 stages, the MK3 Graveyard and the MKD Dark Prison). Once they are all done I will be making video fly throughs of them, and THOSE I will post.

Back on topic- I come to this forum daily in search of good MK art. Nowadays It doesn't come along very often, but I have enough faith in the forum's prospective and past posters to keep coming back. I think alot of the stronger artists have run out of ideas and/or inspiration or motivation (I am one of them). Never mind the rating system here is useless. I have seen 4 & 5 ratings for things that seem unfinished and/or, IMO, shouldn't have even been posted.
Kind of discourages high quality artists after spending several hours/days on a piece, but then it garners the same ratings as some sub-par 30minute dibble-dabble.

I think that there definitely needs to be more constructive mentoring going on around here. I personally TRY to give helpfull suggestions, but unfortunately sometimes my frustration comes out along with it.
Some people just won't listen or don't understand. Others I question, based on the unbalance of their 'supposed' work, whether they actually made it all. You can't have a really cool looking guy on one side with great effects, then the guy on the other side look like 1minute crap. That tells me the good part was PROBABLY something someone else either partially did, or that part was completetely stolen.
I also wish we could separate fakes and animations and stories/fiction from REAL original MK art. I want to see REAL ORIGINAL MK art. What do I mean by that? Work like JAX007 and The Suit. The work is OBVIOUSLY of exisiting MK content, and its ALL original, as in- they made it from scratch!. I don't place as much weight on fakes/anims as they are just copy and paste jobbbies (although those of you who know how to make a fake into a work of art do deserve credit) And IF I SEE ONE MORE FAKE done with that GARBAGE MK1 THE PIT screenshot with the crappy mk dragon overlayed over the moon I AM GOING TO GOUGE MY EYES OUT!
MK fan fiction and stories,well, I just don't get the point of making up story lines or fiction if there is no intent to a visual re-creation. For example- "MK Story" by Yanden has the intent of becoming a massive game which I will be helping with content creation for. I understand text works are considered artistic expression, but I think we all know the original intent of the FAN ART forum was PICTURES, as the older version of the site and forum seemed to focus on. I think fan fiction and stories belong in a different forum all together. It would help those interested in writing and reading get what they are looking for easier, and make finding visual art around here a little easier. I hate reading a topic of a thread expecting a picture and end up finding a bunch of text. LAME meter goes off!
Anyway, I'm sure many think all forms of MK art should be lumped and cluttered together under one forum, but I think we need to examine the prospect a more focussed separation of creative works pertaining to MK.
And that brings me to another topic. ALL WORKS POSTED HERE SHOULD BE OBVIOUSLY MK RELATED. It hasn't happened as much lately, but it was getting really old. General or other-topic "artists" posting obviously not MK related works and making poor attempts at brandng them as such. I say if something isn't OBVIOUSLY MK is should be DELETED from the board with haste!.
If I want to see a medieval scene and a dwarf with a staff I will go to medieval art message board. MK is about its fighters, its locations, its sound, and the MIDWAY created story lines that bind them (MKSM excluded- OMG-bleh on its story line adaptations).
I personally dont think MADE UP MK fighters belong on here at all either. As far as I am concerned they cannot be proved as being MK related unless they borrow visualizations from other exiting fighters, and thats just as bad. Oh- theres another topic. Really crappy hacks of pre-existing art and /or mk backgrounds and sprites. You've all seen it so I won't go on about it.
I could probably rant all day long but this post is probably unmanagebly long all ready, so I'll cut it short.
