The acting was better in the first movie than the second. The plot was more thought out as well. The fights in MK:A, while there were many of them, were mostly short and pointless. I prefer the fewer *good* fights that the first movie had, because they were actually fully done out instead of little scrap-fights.

Like I said though, the acting in the first was much better than Annihilation. You can say whatever you want about the slue of character cameos in the second movie or the multiple fights (The Sonya vs. Cyrax one being the only good one I recognize), but if the movie lacks a good script and good actors to play out said parts, as well as a solid plot, then it's significantly less of a blockbuster movie and more of a "Ooo! Look at the pretty characters! Squee!!"-fest.

...and was I the only one who thought the majority of the outfits from Annihilation looked like they came from a Halloween Costume shop's clearence sale?

I absolutley hate anihilation. the acting is extremely crap and the same goes for the special effects. The costumes are horrible, especcially the robots. Cyrax is my fave charcter in all the mk and in mka he looks like a peice of crap wrapped in plastic. The voices are so damn cheesey.

BTW, is that big thing that jax beats up a orochi hellbeast?
I hope you are mate!

I think that the second film, although not having much to do with the tournament is much more like the games, so i think that going on the merits of a game-to-movie tie-in it is better than the original. Rain and Motaro are well-cool too. Who's with me?...........anyone there?

I like seeing all the characters in motion, even if they aren't perfect.

The first MK story lags a little, too.
It might be stronger, but it doesn't have the enjoyable versatility of Annihilation.

There's enjoyable versitillity in Annihilation? o.O Please explain that one.

I don't see how exactly there were plot holes in the first movie, either. I thought it all tied in very nicely. MK:A was more a cut 'n paste collage of characters and loosely-tied plot. Why the hell kill off Johnny in the first five minutes of the flick? Same with Rain. Why make up some incredibly stupid idea as to a "family tie" between Raiden, Shao Khan, and Shinnok, for the sake of trying to put pizzaz in a movie that already had a lacking script? Why throw in so many characters, that mostly only appear to be killed off. Frankly, I'd rather have characters come in and have some personality and backing, like they did in the first movie.

And why, oh why, did they make my beloved Smoke like fricking Sektor?! Uggg.

The movie wasn't piss-poor horrible. (I reserve that right to RE: A) However, it was lacking a solid script, solid acting for the most part, and messed around with the characters a bit too much for my liking. The only thing I truly liked about the film was the soundtrack., which was quite good.

The only problem I find with this movie are characters that don't look like their game counterparts(Erm...Sheeva and Motaro? WTF?) and the fact that everyone dies too quickly(Sheeva, again, comes to mind. Her and Rain).

Except for that, the movie is kinda cool. Didn't bother me too much, especially when I was a kid.

There are more characters! More colours, whoooo! grin
I was careful to say enjoyable versatility, rather than quality versatility.

It's just fun seeing all the characters in motion.
It's not Shakespeare (some might complain if it WAS), but it's still fun to see the range of characters, locations, and motivations.

In that respect, it surpasses the first MK for me.
With the exception of the introductions, the entire thing is very one-tracked, with little diversity of themes.

To me, it lends itself to a second viewing a lot less than Annihilation.

It has a similar cut-and-paste style on a much smaller scale, too.
Tournament? Guys challenge Goro at random, there are random sparring sessions between chosen heroes and dangerous 'prisoners', random atmospheric location changes for fights (with Sub-Zero and Scorpion), and whoops -- Shang Tsung decided to fight in Outworld. Fair enough! tongue
In it's slack, war themed style, Annihilation probably forces characters on the movie LESS than the first.

I thought i liked MKA when i first saw it, then i watched it again... and i saw what a pile of crap it was.

All the charaters looked corney other than the robots. Rayden looked like a drag queen(that wig was horrible) All the cool characters died with no thought. Rain was wasted in the movie he had a whole 3 min part. Sheeva, which could have been a cool fight scene was killed in the stupidist way. What the hell was with all those dragons coming out of everyones back??

Scorpion was LAME his face mask looked horrible. Sub zero looked like a power ranger. The guy who was supposed to be Shinnok sucked as an actor, and they only mention that he was shinnok at the end of the movie and you could barely hear it cuz one of the gods has a weird ass voice and could barely understand what he was saying.

That movie has sooo many more things wrong with it that i can't even fit it all here.

Tho i will give a few pluses....

Johnny cage was cool and looked like Linden ashby. Thankfully he died so he didn't have to be in the rest of the movie.

Um....... the fight with rayden and kahn in the begining was cool.

um....... the music was alright..... man its hard to think of good things about this movie......

Thats about it,

The first film killed the second...It had hotter chicks, better and longer fights, and a better storyline, I mean common the ending fight in the first movie was an amazing fight, and the reptile fight so sweet,, And I have to close my eyes when the two dragons fight at the end of the second film because it was so terribly done. You cannot even compare the two films in anyway MK1 is just better in every way it is no contest.

MKA was one of those mindless summer movies, pointless and just there to entertian you, yeah the fights were ok, but they had to many characters in it and did not have time for them to each have a very sig. part. Honestly, Scorpion was in it for all of five min.

And the guy who played Shao Khan was terrible, i just cringe when ever i see him.
With the second movie i always felt that it was rushed or they tried to cram in as much as they could into the storyline from mk2/3 storyline. i definatley hold the first movie far over the second one, the the second did have couple decent parts. But the first movie ad the scorpion/JC fight which IMO was the best fight from of both movies.
