Animation or CGI Movie???

Mortal Kombat needs a new animated film badly. Especially one thats gritty and targeted towards mature audiences.
Street fighter 2: The animated movie and Tekken: The motion picture were more brutal and well produced compared to Mk's animated cartoon.

I think an animated movie would suffer from some of the same problems the live action ones did, in that an hour and a half or so (actually, all WB's direct to DVD superhero films are restricted to a 70 minutes running time, so that's even worse) isn't enough time to really cover all the events of an MK game. You end up skipping stuff and doing a poor job introducing important characters.
A series would be better. You can spend the whole 13 episode season on one game and like each episode could adequately cover a different character and/or you could show every important fight of the whole tournament.

What they should do is quit trying to CHANGE shit and just stick to the freakin' storyline, like the first Mortal Kombat film.
From what I can see, a main reason for the fails of fighting game-based films is the lacking of the original story.
For example, with Mortal Kombat Annihilation, the story for MK2 was completely skipped, and while film loosely used the story for MK3, it was more in the likeness of MKTrilogy, and even incorporated elements of MK4.
In fact, the third Mortal Kombat film could have very well been MKTrilogy (an apt name for it too), if the second film was based on MK2. Instead, MKAnnihilation severely damaged the film series and made it virtually impossible to make a sequal.
Another main reason is lack of information. The film makers attempt to cram in as many [popular] characters as possible (i.e. Street Fighter, Dead or Alive), and thus many characters that are important in the games are made minor in the films, while others may not even have any other existance than to please fans of the games (i.e. Rain and Ermac in MKAnnihilation, Gne Fu and Brad Wong in Dead or Alive).
This upsets the fans and repels them from the film, and makes it even more difficult for non-gamers to understand the film.
If Ed Boon and all these other game creators stop being pussies and take charge in the making of the films, we'd have better products.

If you read the recent lawsuit by Threshold vs Midway., you will see that the future plans included at least an animated movie and a third film. You'll also read previous mediums Threshold made, such as TUG2MK and "Behind the Dragon."
