Hi all,
As we wait for any news about the upcoming movie by WB, I felt it necessary to bring in my two cents, from my experiences in film, as an MK collector, archivist, and even reseller, to shed light on this and to help end some of these arguments I am constantly reading, every day, on MK sites, Facebook, posts, etc. If you don't want to read the wall of text to follow here it is in a nutshell:
1. WB cannot afford to rush this movie. Neither can we as fans. WB must cater to the general audience, however, if it wishes to make money. Otherwise, as history as shown, the MK fans alone do not bring enough revenues to keep MK an ongoing project, so expect changes to be made to keep MK relevant.
2. A lot of people criticize Kevin for one or two changes or additions or even clarifications to the existing storyline. Yes, a lot of people found it annoying that Raiden would accidentally land at an insane asylum before meeting the heroes. But that was an additional story arc, as careful analysis (and transcription) revealed. It didn't take anything away from the MK mythos, only added, and possibly a new character who perhaps could later ebcome tied into the storyline (like Hydro, who was originally a minor comic book character and never from the game). But remember - a lot of people didn't like teh first MK movie when it came out because it steered away from the mythos but THEY DEALT WITH IT AND IT GREW ON THEM AND THEY LOVE IT NOWADAYS. So sit back, relax, and you will too with whatever happens. As we say in today's generation...
Whatevs!
Understand this - Patience is a virtue. Annihilation sucked because it was rushed, that led to all the reasons people say it sucked. Freddy vs Jason also sucked because it was rushed once New Line got the rights to Jason. This isn't Deadly Night, Silent Night here (or whatever horror film was hot in a few days) - Mortal Kombat is a huge saga. To make all the pieces of the puzzle fit you must first know which pieces fit what.
We will likely have to wait for the series to premiere... or even end as a lead-to, hehehe, to find anything else about the movie. Logic dictates that - when news broke about the series beginning production we learned a little about the movie from Lance Sloan. Warner Bros. is backing the movie so there's more hope than before. This movie MUST make WB money if it wishes to continue in a global market where Batman, Harry Potter, and The Hunger Games are profitable. The money it made was considered huge for New Line because New Line was independent back then. WB is a major studio - in this business that does not mean they will invest in any and everything even if they can afford to. So they must make the movie to the point where it will sell to a GENERAL AUDIENCE rather than MK fans. In case you haven't followed merchandise and resale sales for MK, much of the merch upon released is NOT a huge seller and only years down the road will it even turn a profit (and that's from my experience as a MK reseller).
I also love all the criticism Kevin gets when, case in point, the FIRST MK movie derived a lot from the video game:
1. Scorpion's harpoon... suddenly is an animated snake?
2. Neither Scorpion and Sub-Zero were Asian in the film. In fact, almost all the video game fighters, except Sonya and Cage from what I recall, were Asian in the game but only Liu Kang and Shang Tsung were Asian in the movie.
3. In the video game, Scorpion and Sub-Zero were bitter enemies. In the movie, they were made slaves under Shang's power.
4. Since when did Shang have the ability to cloud men's minds like The Shadow? I thought he could only morph and be a deceitful liar, now he has mind-control?
5. Almost none of the video game costumes adapted to the movie. This was explained in a few articles by Kasanoff.
6. In the movie, Kano becomes a servant to Shang. When the hell did that happen, even in the Midway comics?
7. In the video game, Reptile was not a reptilian mini creature - he was a reptile the same height as a human. Oddly no one bitched about that.
8. In the video game, Sonya was older and not so sexy. In teh movie, Sonya was really young... and hot.
Despite people bitched then they were not so violent and bent out of shape about things now.

Well,I agree with all your points except the last one, because Sonya might have had an old actress playing her in the game, she was never old STORYWISE,I forgot exatly, but it was around 24-25,so Bridgette Wilson was good for a role...I wish Cameron Diaz didn't get injured while training for this move...

Cameron Diaz would have been hot as Sonya as well as Kathleen McClellan, another girl who was casted as Sonya but injured herself and replaced by Bridgette, who had actually injured herself during an audition and went to do Billy Madison and was called back to MK on the day Billy Madison wrapped.
