Full title: Mortal Kombat (2021) R-Rated Pandemic/Internet-Era Film Almost DESTROYS Mortal Kombat (1995) PG-13 Rated Pre-Pandemic/Pre-Internet Film at Box Office
But it topped domestic weekend box office.
From the article:
Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema’s Mortal Kombat topped the domestic weekend box office, opening with a solid $22.515 million. That’s essentially tied with the $23.5 million debut of Paul W.S. Anderson’s Mortal Kombat back in August of 1995 (around $50 million for inflation).
That $22.515 million debut weekend includes a $9.03 million Friday gross and an $8.66 million (-5%) Saturday, giving it a 2.49x multiplier. That’s reasonable for an R-rated video game-based action fantasy with a fervent fanbase. The reviews and buzz for the relaunch have been “fine for a video game movie” (56% fresh and 5.5/10 on Rotten Tomatoes and a B+ from Cinemascore). The domestic weekend gross is both well above the over/under $13 million pre-release tracking and puts the over/under $55 million New Line flick in a position to earn (presuming a 2.7x multiplier) around $60 million domestic by the end. Like Tom & Jerry, Mortal Kombat is a Covid-era success by performing about as well as it might have had it “disappointed” in normal circumstances.
