It all began with that infamous Mortal Kombat: Rebirth trailer, which was intended as a proof-of-concept and pitch to Warner Bros. by film director and choreographer, Kevin Tancharoen which become the catalyst for the widely acclaimed Mortal Kombat: Legacy digital series, which garnered just over 60 million unique views over on YouTube collectively.

Now, The Hollywood Reporter has announced that a full-length feature film for Mortal Kombat is currently in development with a release window of 2013 under the film giant - New Line Cinema who have given Kevin the green-light to begin the films development.

"Mortal Kombat is heading back to the big-screen.

New Line is hiring the filmmakers of the popular Mortal Kombat digital series, made earlier this year by corporate sibling Warner Bros. Digital Distribution, to take on a new adaptation of the classic 1990s fighting game.

The short was viewed more than 10 million times on YouTube, and although no movie deal materialized, he was asked to direct the 10-episode web series, which debuted in April, attracting more than 15 million unique visitors.

Off that success, Warners and New Line execs thought it was time to try to revisit a big-screen effort. (New Line made a Mortal Kombat movie in 1995, which grossed more than $70 million domestically and helped launch a directing career for Paul W. S. Anderson. A follow-up movie in 1997, however, fizzled.)

Uziel is returning to write the new movie, which is still in the development stages. There is no actor attached and the new story will not serve as an extension of the game or digital series.

Dave Neustadter and Walter Hamada are overseeing for New Line."

Whilst there are no actors currently attached, it'd possibly be a relatively safe bet to anticipate some cast members to return from the Legacy series. Oren Uziel who was enlisted to write for Legacy, has been confirmed to pen the upcoming feature film.

ComingSoon.net had the chance to feature an extensive and interesting interview with Kevin Tancharoen in which he shares his views and excitement concerning the news. To check out what Tancharoen had to reveal and confirm about the next MK movie, check out his interview at ComingSoon.net.
