I wanna see this movie made. Who is with me? I would be happy if these first seven minutes were the opening scene (although I think it would be better to have Scorpion "kill" Sub-Zero, then maybe skip "three months later" to what we have seen already)
Admit it people, this movie would be AMAZING. It's new, it looks awesome, the fight scenes would be great, and it's MORTAL KOMBAT. I honestly don't see how an MK movie could be better than this. Finally, someone has come up with a unique way for an MK movie. This is what we've been waiting years for, so why hate on it??
Let's make this happen. I wanna see this movie made. All in favor, say aye.

I have to disagree. I think this movie would be the worst possible thing for the franchise.

Why? It's an original take on an idea that's been around since 92. Look at Twisted Metal Black and how popular that was, even though it changed the origins of every character. "Armageddon" was supposed to be the end, what more could you want?
I like this idea because they've taken the same characters from over ten years ago and given them a new look/origin. If you disagree, I dunno wtf you expect a mortal kombat movie to be.. unless you want a remake of the original

I co-sign your petition. Not because I care about a shitty MK movie pitch, I just wanted to be the first person in the thread to not knock you.

Re-imagining MK into the journey of a mid-west country singer would be original... but it wouldn't be good.

I would expect it to be based off Mortal Kombat. I don't think I'm being unreasonable here.

A faithful adaptation of Mortal Kombat wouldn't be a remake of the first version, since A) Subzero would know how to talk, B) Liu Kang wouldn't have a non-existent brother, and C) Scorpion wouldn't shoot bird heads out the Vagina inside his hand.

MK family feud would be bad ass, though!
Or MK Rock Band! Fuck yeah!!! Guitar fights, mofo!

I must respond.... And I agree with first post - MAKE THIS DAMN MOVIE!!!!!
Key reasons:
1st the useless sack of shit Johnny Cage gets killed in the first 6 minutes :) Yay for all of us who really REALLY hated him throughout the series of movies and games, IE - it was the best part of the second MK movie and I always take a personal pleasure in destroying anyone who plays him lol.
2nd the first movie was an adaptation of the games, and while it did well, it could have been way better, by not letting Raiden be a pansy bitch. And while they seemed to lend Raiden a pair of balls in the second movie - they promptly took them away at the end by making him an elder god.
3rd this could be the shot the franchise needs to get back its main base which has mostly moved on to adulthood lol.... This movie would be just cheesy enough to be an MK movie, but also a great action flick. Have you seen Ong Bok 1 2 or 3?
4th and finally revisions can be good or bad (AVP being bad and Batman Begins being good), and this one - thus far looks good, of course MK Purists as I will call them - will say its crap; but they are the ones that fear change and the MK Series has had MANY changes over the years.
In the end as in the beginning - MAKE THIS DAMN MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!

Fuck yes, this has to happen. Imagine Raiden is the on-screen character and you're playing Riot in Thunder Alley.

What a lot of people are forgetting is that this 'test' shoot is not an indication of the final script - the director already said he wants more fantasy elements in the movie, so I suspect we'll have proper origins for characters like Baraka and Reptile. If the script is respectful to the source material, then I'm all up for him directing it. Here's why:
-CASTING - He already proved his great with casting: The two actors he chose for the very important roles of Jax and Sonya shit all over the previous actors (and they managed to do this in literally less than 2 minutes).
-ATMOSPHERE - Very dark and moody, just how a Mortal Kombat movie should feel.
-CHARACTERIZATION - This is due to the writing/acting/directing - Spot on for both Jax and Sonya.
-CHOREOGRAPHY - The Johnny Cage Vs. Baraka scene was better than any fight scene in the previous movies - brutal, violent, very well choreographed, and even had (gasp!) a fatality.
-GREAT USE OF BUDGET - He filmed this 'test' with only $7,000 and pretty much shitted on all previous incarnations with those limitations. I could only imagine what he could do with a $30-60 million dollar budget.
-DIRECTOR IS A FAN OF THE SOURCE MATERIAL - Read his interview if you have any doubts: http://www.collider.com/2010/06/09/kevin-tancharoen-interview-mortal-kombat-rebirth-feature-film/
-FATALATIES - 'Real' fatalities, not the watered down BS we got in the previous films...
What's not to like? Some altered origins on a 'test' film? Based on the negative feedback he received in that regard and his desire to incorporate a more mystical theme in the movie, I doubt we have much to worry about in terms of the character origins....
I'll take this director over the minks and Uwe Bowl's any day....

I don't know if I'd want to see this EXACT movie get made, but I do like a lot of what the director's doing here. I like the style of it, the dialog, the acting, which is already a thousand times better than either of the first movies... I dunno, it looks like an MK movie that wouldn't be all campy and what not.
I still think that the more mystical aspects would come from having an actual budget, you have a martial arts tournament, and while I do think that there are things that simply wouldn't translate well from the game to movies (Outworld nomads and lizard people, for example), I still believe that you could create a great vision of Mortal Kombat that's both realistic and faithful to the original game vision.
To the people that don't like this, and that's fine that you don't, you honestly believe that there's another director out there that knows the source material better and would try harder to be faithful to it? I mean, again, you all know by now that this guy had 7K and his friends donating their time and he created something that honestly looks great.
If it's not Mortal Kombat, as I keep hearing, then what would be MK to you? Or rather, what would be MK AND a good movie to you? I think that the vision this director has, minus some origin story issues which look highly related to budget and time constraints, is a heck of a lot closer to both mainstream respectability and the source material than what you'd find from most other directors that would be willing to take on this project.
That's just my 2 cents though. I'd rather WB gives this guy a truckload of money to make his perfect MK film than see some hack like Michael Bay take it and turn everything in to explosions and sweaty women on motorcycles.
I look at the alternatives and I see what this guy did with the money he had and the desire he appears to have and it's no contest for me. I'm sure other directors could make a competent film, but to me, this guy just seems to "get it."

A few days ago I would of said yes... but guess what? I'm not as dumb as I was a few days ago. I hope this movie never gets made. It's not Mortal Kombat. It's just shit.
I just want a good MK movie, I don't care if it's completely faithful or not.
I can't believe someone actually said that the first movie wasn't faithful because Sub-Zero didn't speak, Liu Kang didn't have a brother (completely wrong), and Scorpion's spear was more like a serpent. What the fuck?
How the hell does that matter?
Personally I've always liked Sub-Zero way more as a silent character than a speaking one. I always think he sounds nothing like he should.
Also Scorpion's serpent in the movie kicks the spear's ass. Fuck the spear, seriously.
It's not like it would change anything.
I can't believe people are calling this "shit" just because it's not faithful. It's well written, well acted out, the martial arts scene is badass, the characters are creatively done (I had never seen a villain with harlequin syndrome), it's dark, it's violent, it's well structured... It's not shit, far from it. It's good, there's no questioning that at all.
Because it's not faithful it's shit? That's completely illogical.

There's a big difference between not being totally faithful to the source material and chucking it out the door completely. The only thing that ties Rebirth to MK proper is character names.
Look at it this way. If this director pitched a Transformers film instead of MK, the Autobots and Decepticons would be rival (human) gangs and Devastator would be five dudes sewn together at their torsos.

I'll sign. I'd rather see an awsome movie that's loosely based on the game than a giant shitfest of a movie that's spot on.

Say what? Reptile's backstory is one of the most creative "monster" stories I've seen in years. I'd never ever seen a harlequin-based killer before, it was a great idea and NOTHING like Croc anyway since Croc:
a) Lives in the sewers
b) Isn't picky about what he eats (as in, not just the head)
c) Is a huge, muscular mutated monster

Agree totally.
I used to want an MK movie that followed the story of the original games, a film that would literally bring them to life. But actually, seeing where that story has gone to with the more recent games - I couldn't give a damn. MKDA had some interesting ideas, but then MKD destroyed them all for me.
So I started thinking, 'maybe if they went back to the originals the story would be as good again' - and then MKSM came along and ruined that as well.
At least that's all my opinion.
Presented here is a version that seems to work. The director has proved he can knock out a quality film - and bearing in mind the source material here, a film that never had me scoffing at how ridiculous it was. Give this man a budget and watch the blood fly - I'd love to see an MK film that works within its own context, mainly because I no longer think that context of the games would work well as a film anymore.
And Jeri Ryan as Sonya is genius
