Hey guys,
I was just thinking about stuff that exists in the MK games but probably only because of the other MK media that exists. Let's make a list of stuff that was probably 'borrowed' or inspired from the other MK media or at least appears similar. I'll start.
Kano being Aussie = from the movies (games originally said an American but born in Japan)
Raiden having white/gray hair = from the movies (games originally said black)
Jax having metal arms = from the Malibu MK comics released well before MK3, where other Special Forces agents had metal arms
Onaga, the Dragon King = very reminiscent of the Malibu MK comics where it was originally stated that a dragon lord named Draxxon was emperor of Outworld long before Shao Kahn.
God of Chaos = MKD's Konquest Mode explained that there was a God of Chaos, but they never mentioned him by name. In the MK Malibu comics, his name was Zaggot, and his brother was Abacus (The God of Order).
The One Being = pretty similar to Jeff Rovin's MK Novel which featured P'an Ku, a 'man' out of whom the entire universe (gods included) was formed from his body once he died. This was taken straight from Chinese mythology.
Quan Chi = first appeared in the cartoon Defenders of the Realm before he was in any of the games.
Bo' Rai Cho = obviously inspired by the Drunken Master and was given his name because of boracco which is Spanish for 'drunk'; but part of the equation could have been "Master Cho" from MK Conquest, from arguably one of the best episodes, "The Master".
Shaolin Monks = their appearance was much different in the MK1 comic book; but after the MK movies, the normal Shaolin Monk costume (as depicted in the MK4 Comic and later in MKSM) was all orange.
That's all I can think of for now. Anyone else got anything?

Good point! You just reminded me of a couple more.
- The Johnny Cage/Sonya attraction (as depicted in the MK4 comic, MKDA ending) originally came from the MK movie
- The Johnny Cage/Goro rivalry (as depicted in several promo images of MK4 and then in-game in MKSM) which also was originally shown in the MK movie
- Kano's MKDA combo "Ear to ear" based on that famous line of his from the movie

Raiden didn't really become the "Guardian of Earth" and mentor to the heroes until the movies came out. Before then, in MK1 and to a lesser extent MK2, he was just a pissed off Thunder God who fought because he felt like it.
I don't know if this has been officially stated in the game canon, but it seems to have become the accepted belief that Sonya Blade hates Kano because he killed her partner. This came from the movies, too.

The Unholy Alliance in MK Conquest,......which became the Deadly Alliance in MK Deadly Alliance.
Rain being in love with Kitana.......never really stated in the games, but fans have seem to accept it, since MK Conquest and MK Defenders of the Realm both implemented the relationship.

Wasn't Jax originally a concept of a special forces agent with metallic arms named Kurtis Stryker?

The MK Comics first showed Kahn being unmasked and having that Tarkattan-like face. Then in MKSM they had him have the face from the comics.

Johnny Cage never wore his sunglasses in any MK game until MK3, which was released the same year as the movie. I assume that he began wearing his glasses in the game as a reference to his fight with Goro in the movie where the sunglasses were significant.

While I appreciate your line of thinking here, this isn't really a great example because the Quan Chi/Shang Tsung alliance actually came from the games first (before it was implemented in MK Conquest, even).
The MKM instruction booklet showed Shang Tsung and Quan Chi's first alliance with each other approximately 500 years ago, when Shang Tsung (using knowledge obtained from stealing the soul of the Great Kung Lao who was just killed by Goro) found out the location of the sacred Map of Elements and agreed to reveal its whereabouts to Quan Chi, but in exchange Quan Chi and Shinnok were supposed to taint Sindel's soul with evil (so that Tsung and Kahn could resurrect her someday on Earth and with her being Kahn's wife but reborn on earth, this would allow him access to the Earthrealm).
But nice attempt and I like your thinking on this.

Well this was never really implemented in the games; the point of this thread was for stuff that exists within the MK games already but appears to have come from other media.

Johnny Cage has always had sunglasses; in both MK1 and MK2 already (see his character select screen shot, bio pic, versus screen pics, etc. plus in-game in his victory pose).

Well, yes, but he never actually wore them while fighting.

He wore the glasses in MK1 and MK2. Go to the MKWarehouse, and look at the victory poses. Or the select screen icon. Should show him with glasses. Or did you mean that he never wore them in the fight until MKT?

Yeah, that's what I meant.
With that fight between Cage and Goro making those sunglasses so important, they started to become more important throughout the games as well, so much so that he began wearing them in fights.
My bad though, I never said while fighting.

Here's an interesting question regarding these:
How many are worth-while additions and how many were better off left non-canon?
Raiden having white/gray hair
I think this works. We never saw Raiden's hair until MK:DA and Deception, and just imagine if his hair was black. I think the white hair makes him look more god-like for some reason.
Quan Chi
Good addtion. Easily my favorite MK villain and he had a lot of impact on the plot.
Liu Kang/Kitana romance
Meh. I never cared for this. It does make sense and it adds a lot to Liu Kang, but it doesn't do much for Kitana. Sometimes it even holds her down.
The Johnny Cage/Sonya attraction
This I never minded. Doesn't take anything away from Sonya and in all honesty, Johnny Cage doesn't have much else going for him.
The Johnny Cage/Goro rivalry
I don't like this because it's not a rivalry. This to me always seemed like a half-assed attempt to make Cage more important than he really is.
Raiden as Guardian of Earth
While I always preferred the pissed off Raiden from MK1 and MK2...story-wise this was probably the better decision, making him a mentor character for the heroes.
Kano killing Sonya's partner
Meh. A reason is better than no reason.
The others I have no opinion on.

The Turban Guard is a Null Character scrapped from the final version of Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, but his character model is still accessible with Cheat Devices. He is similar to the Masked Guard, only I think this version of the Guard is derived from the Guards in the Mortal Kombat Movie, who had their faces/heads covered with turbans instead of the masks the Masked Guards wear, in the Mortal Kombat Games.

He was made for MKM:SZ, and wasn't inspired by other MK media.

Johnny Cage worried about being thought of as a fake: I can't recall where it showed up in the games, but I'm sure it did. Maybe it was during Cyrax's Konquest mode in MKDA. I know Cyrax hated a lot of Johnny's movies, so maybe they snuck something in there about how he thought Johnny was a fake. And until the movie came out, I don't think this was ever something Johnny thought about.
