Sub-Zero is Chinese-American. So, you're wrong. Kind of ironic, don't ya' think, [SUB-ZERO?

Source?

We all know how much you froth at the mouth over anything white male oriented, but here you go, From Wikipedia (with foot notes to sources so you don't use the lazy "I don't believe anything on Wikipeida."):

"Sub-Zero was first conceived by Mortal Kombat co-creator John Tobias as a mysterious character named simply "Ninja".[33] According to Richard Divizio, the Lin Kuei idea was his input back at the very beginning of the development, in the project that had been cancelled by Midway Games before being restarted later, and in which "originally John [Tobias] had Japanese ninjas".[34] Tobias wrote this inspiration came from the controversial book The Chinese Ninja Connection by Li Hsing, which "posits historical evidence for the existence of the Lin Kuei and their influence on the Japanese ninja. I was aware of there being some controversy about the author’s claims. So when we split the character in two for palette swaps, I thought it would be fitting that one was of Chinese origin and the other Japanese to kind of embody the argument."[35] According to Tobias, the original "Hunter&Hunted concept was going [to be] about a ninja escaping from his clan and hunted by another member. We used that later for SZ in MK3."[36] Daniel Pesina recalled Tobias' idea involved two ninja brothers, one of whom "wants to lead the clan, so he kills the father who is their teacher".[34] [...]

The character has primarily been portrayed or voiced by non-Asian actors.[38] Midway Games later explained Sub-Zero's rather occidental appearance for a Chinese assassin by giving him a white mother. According to this new backstory, his father had a wife, two sons, and a daughter while he lived in America to hide his personal role as an assassin for the Lin Kuei."[39]

I mean even going all the way back to his official ending in MK2 he appears Asian.

Does he?
Oh, the good old Wikipedia...
However, instead of words, I will show you visual facts which can't be denied.

From the beginning, through all these years he was portrayed as a white guy, through and through. You can argue with that all you want but anyone who has a pair of eyeballs can see it. And not just that, but he even had blue eyes... :\
You want to bring up the story? Sure. Everything could be explained and/or justified, but the fact remains that he was portrayed as white through all these years. If they didn't change him for so long, why are they changing him now? It's so obvious that because of the diversity politics.
And the same can be said about Kitana...

ps: That ending in MK2 with Joshua Tsui, every oldschool MK fan knows that it was a last minute job. They needed a face for his ending, Daniel Pesina could not give his face twice because he already acted as Johnny Cage, so they quickly put Josh in the ninja costume and made a quick ending. The fact that Josh was Asian was just a simple coincidence. That's why SZ remained white in MK3, MKMSZ, MK4, MKDA etc...

Or if you want to bring up MK2 SZ ending as some proof, then let's bring up Scorpion's MK1 ending too...

MK4 Sub-Zero is actually asian.

Old timeline = Sub Zero was half white half Asian/Chinese

New timeline = Sub Zero is 100% Chinese.

I prefer new timeline

This is why I don't think NRS really cares about their characters' ethnicity.

Sub-Zero looks white from MK1 to MK3, then he looks asian in MK4. Later, from MK Deadly Alliance to MK Armageddon he looks half-white/half-asian (looking more asian or more white depending on the game) and finally looking asian again in MK9, then looking white again in MKX and now looking asian once again in MK11.

Same thing happens with Scorpion.

Kabal is also an example of this, looking paler or more tanned depending on the version and the platform you played in, looking eurasian in MK9 and finally looking like a full-blooded native american in MK11.

John Turk also played Shang Tsung and all the ninjas. Does this mean they were all white too? LOL

Not sure when or where the 'woke' era started, but Sub-Zero was already portrayed as asian in MK9

Considering that Mortal Kombat was so heavily influenced by Enter the Dragon and Big Trouble In Little China and its whole mythos was originally built around a concept of "the old Oriental legends are true, the rest of the world are too caught up in their cynicism to realise" or as the first movie so beautifully put it "American life has enfeabled his mind; too much... television" I'm actually shocked that people are angry that more Mortal Kombat characters are being redesigned as Asian in origin once more (which MKs 1 & 2 represented as Asian in the first place). The more Chinese and Japanese characters and mythology in Mortal Kombat, the better as far as I'm concerned.

Although the characters themselves weren't great, I loved the concept behind the likes of Ashrah, Bo Rai Cho and Shujinko. I'll take those kung fu movie archetypes (straight out of the likes of A Chinese Ghost Story) over westernised heavy metal concepts any day, which sadly MK went down way too many times from MK3 onwards.

Western Sub Zero always came across as a cheap budget constraint to me, I'd far rather he was of ancient Oriental origin. I like the notion of characters like Johnny Cage discovering all the old parchment myths were true, being fish out of water and learning ancient Chinese secrets will destroy the world. That to me is Mortal Kombat; an Asian myth that the cynical western characters get drawn into and discover is all too real.

Complaining that MK has gone too Asian is like complaining that Star Wars has too many aliens in it.
