MK11 should transition to 3D play style
03/03/2015 05:18 PM EST
I know this might get a lot of flack because MK4-MKA weren't popular for the time and MK9-MKX have a big reputation, but I believe that NRS should take their chances and make MK11 on a 3D fighting plane.

One thing that's impressing more than the characters in MKX are the levels,
they are magnificent, however we can only see about a half of whats going on in the background because of the camera setting. Also there's more space for the players to move around and interact with the (amazing) environment if they convert to 3D.

I might have made another post on this months back, but there's not much else they can do to in terms of gameplay if they continue fighting on a 2D plane without adding long-ass string combos or adding Smash bros platforms. I don't really see anyone going crazy over MK going on a 2D plane anymore, I think its rather outdated and it adds way too many restrictions to characters play style.

Mortal Kombat was more popular during the 2D era you say? Guess what else made them more popular: arcades, media attention, movies, advertising, and all the other spin-offs that gave the classic characters more attention. This ain't the 90s no mo...maybe hardcore fans on the MKO and TRMK see that, but sadly the majority don't. So they'll probably stick with 2D...its sad really.

Being someone that grew up with the 3D era it'll always have a special place in my heart.

However, I can say without question that the 2D gameplay is significantly more fun than the 3D.

Although I did enjoy 3D MK games, it suits MK better to be 3D models on a 2D fighting plane. It just works better game-play wise as MK9 and MKX show.

Certain fighting games just have a specific fighting engine that works for it.
MK and SF is 2D. Tekken and Soul Calibur is 3D.

One of the greatest things NRS did was return the series to 2D. Leave the 3D fighters to the people that do them best, and let MK do what it does best. We are past the time where 3D = Better.

Yeah, I'm gonna hop on the "no" train as well. The 3-D games will always have a special place in my heart(mainly for storyline reasons). MK is absolutely at its best on a 2-D plane.

You work with what you got...not what you hope for.

I have no problem with that idea. I'd buy mk4 if it was on psn. That's not something netherrealm has to handle personally either, sub contract like the mkx port. Mk9 movements would probably look janky in 3d though. Mkx would be better suited with the running, pacing and animations.

MK4 isn't a 3d game, even if you do the sidestep it resets automatically to the 2D plane, they should get a proper working 3D engine because MKD and MKA were fucking garbage, unplayable crap.

I grew up in the 2D era, but I prefer 3D style fighting

The special moves that utilizes it, is what made it so fun, plus the leveks with stage fatalities

Wow...I was hoping NRS can officially rub Tekken's face in the dirt by giving MK impressive and dynamic movesets without the floaty juggle combos that have remained unchanged in Tekken, but I guess that dream won't come true.

Y'know, NRS has a bigger budget now that their partnered with Warner Bros, so unlike the midway years they can perfect 3D gameplay just like they do 2D. I'm guessing most people haven't even read my full post.

2D should stay. 3D MK ruins new characters, gimps Existing characters movesets and just doesn't plain feel good for a special move and projectile heavy game like MK.

First off. Switching to a full 3D arena would require them to remove some of the objects/details you like so much. They can have so much detail because they just have to load one side of the area.
And another reason why 3D didn't work was because Mortal Kombat was heavy on projectiles and special moves. In the 3D era, most of the special moves/projectiles were obsolete because they could be side-stepped easily. So you only could win with close combat and combo's. Which is good for games like Tekken, Soul Calibur, ... . But not for projectile based fighters like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter.

All the things you mention to go to a 3D-playing field, are exactly the reasons why they went back to a 2D plane.
