This apparently dropped a bit under the radar a couple of months back, but has now gained a ton of traction. NRS is expected to announce that Ronda Rousey will be voicing Sonya in MK11 at the reveal event. This is being picked up not by some, but many sources and gaming news sites. With that much traction there's a good chance that this is legit.

Personally...and I do mean personally, so curb the rage...to me, this is the first spot of "bad news" regarding MK11. I can't stand Rousey, and the few times she has "acted" have been cringe-worthy terrible. I haven't watched wrestling in nearly 20 years but I hear she is just awful when she takes the mic. From what I've seen, I definitely believe it.

We've seen the MK and Injustice franchises grow tremendously in terms of story-telling, with pretty great voice work. They've been using professional voice actors since MK9...the likes of which you see in high profile animated shows, other videos games etc. Casting Rousey, while probably a good marketing tactic, is a bad move from a characterization perspective. What they're doing here is the equivalent of taking, say...Tara Strong or Jennifer Hale, and replacing them with Sofia Vegara because even though Sofia Vegara has a voice like a tortured slow-dying cat, she's sexy. Since sexy doesn't really apply to Rousey, it's a matter of casting her because she's "tough" and recognizable.

Given Rousey's titanic ego, she'll probably also demand that her likeness be used too.

It's a minor thing, sure...but seeing how far this series has come, introducing an element that will make you cringe at terrible voice acting is step back. Oh well. If it's the ONLY thing in this game worth complaining about, no big deal.

I follow MMA, so I'm definitely familiar with Rhonda. I haven't followed wrestling for a few decades now, but I'm sure she plays a great heal in WWE because she's a straight up biotch in real life. That being said, I don't mind at all that she'll likely be voicing Sonya. WB trying to expand their audience by putting the most recognizable female fighter of all time in their new fighting game (even if it's only for voice acting) is a very smart move. Now it all comes down to her performance and I'm really hoping she pulls it off.

Ronda’s voice is not too bad when she talks normally, hopefully she won’t force her voice too much and end up sounding really really terrible... I fear that a bit as well, you’re not the only one.

NRS is actually pushing a story that is less MK like to appeal to the masses, the casual gamers and I don't know why people in any shape or form think NRS has been doing a great story mode for MK9 & MKX. Deadly Alliance and Deception were cool, but these last 2 were downright horrible. MKX pushed it to a new low of inconsistent, typical Hollywood type sci-fi / action movies with some clear from the big franchise DC Comics. I like to think Warner Bros is pushing for this. MK11 might be the turning point, though it's a clusterfuck waiting to happen.

I wouldn't mind her voicing my favorite character- she's cringe worthy while acting, but doing voice acting is pretty different. However, I hope they don't use her digitalized face on Sonya, go get someone else.

I hope it's false because Ronda is a terrible actor and if her wwe mic skills say anything it's that her voice acting won't be very good either.....plus the woman they had doing Sonya's voice was perfect so I don't see why they had to change her anyways just because Ronda is a big name doesn't mean she will do a good job.

I don't really know anything about Ronda Rousey but from what I've heard of her voice, she sounds a bit like a less annoying Rosanne Barr. But maybe they wanted someone who sounded a little older...

In my opinion, the problem is less with Rhonda Rousey's voice or personality; I know little about her, and she sounds enough like Sonya to me. My problem is her voice actor in MKX did a fine job. I think it was pretty much THE voice for Sonya. I am a little concerned that they're shelving really good voice actors who have really brought life to these characters, just to have bigger names involved.

That being said, I do think there were a couple of character who haven't found their voices yet. Shang Tsung, Smoke, Reptile, and Baraka are among those who could use some fresh voices. Sonya is one of the good ones though.

I've never heard of Rhonda Rousey before the leak. She's not popular in Europe like... at all. On the other hand, Tricia Helfer was great as Sonya and is a bigger name around the world thanks to her Battlestar Galactica fame.

I think people are placing way too much focus on their personal feelings of Ronda Rousey.

I neither care for MMA nor WWE, so I am rather indifferent, but I do know that the reasons people dislike her inclusion in MKX have little to do with her [potential] voice talent. Now, if you genuinely lack respect for Rousey and feel morally obligated to oppose her, then by all means do what you feel is right. However, I doubt this is the case for any of us here.

I like to be blind to faces when it comes to voice acting, for the faces - obviously - don't matter. It's their voices we need. Her voice is not annoying or obnoxious to me, so I wouldn't mind hearing it in a video game. Even better, it's not a particularly recognizable voice, either, so tuning out her face would have not be an issue for me anyway.

Don’t care for her voice. As long as they upgrade her design to something more asthetically appeasing. Liked her MK9 look. Hated her MKX look; really, really awful design.

interesting since she is with wwe now and usually vince mcmahon dosent let talent do there own projects without getting a cut of the profits himself. wwe is soooo pg now with no blood in matches plus his wife is in presidents trump cabinet so they have to keep a clean image . i mean if this is true more power to ronda she deserves it but i dont know we will see thursday. and yes i follow backstage politics on pro wrestling so

Yes, I don't watch UFC. But my opinion is based on my conversations with fellow MK fans from all over Europe. Prior to the MK11 related leak, more than 80% of my contacts (8 out of 10 people) had no idea who Ronda Rousey is. In one of the recent NetherKast episodes, one of the American guys also said that he had learned about Rousey's existence because of the leaked emails.

Certainly, I can't speak on behalf of all Europeans, but according to my survey, Ronda and UFC are more of an American thing.

BTW, it turns out I've seen her in The Expendables 3 and Furious 7. These movies did not make me want to know more about her. She looked like an extra on screen, because of her small roles and limited acting skills. I guess it's not easy being remembered when your ass is handed to you by Michelle Rodriguez. :)

Of course, I'll give the lady a chance to prove herself as a voice actress. I watched some interviews with her on YouTube. She sounds like older Cassie Cage and that's a good thing.

But she has to work miracles to outdo Tricia Helfer...

It's just a voice, guys. It's not like NRS is replacing the actor or actress in your favorite sitcom or reality TV series. Most of us probably wouldn't even notice a change if Ronda Rousey, who has genuine talent (and a more-than-decent agent, it would seem), wasn't "announced" as a potential voice actress for Sonya. Don't hate her for being chosen by NRS. Place your blame on those who selected her. I, however, think it's a fine choice and totally see the similarities in personality between "Rowdy" Rousey and Sonya Blade.

I'm all for it. Ronda was a little over-exposed a few years ago, especially with her campaigning to be Captain Marvel, but I don't have anything against her. I can't wait to see what she and NRS has in store with Sonya. Sonya is a character they've been getting right in the last few games and I absolutely loved her in MKX.

That said I hope they can get her face right. She looked weird in MKX.

I don't really know how I feel about this.

Nothing against Rousey, but it seems like she may be walking into someone else's role. Now, if Tricia Helfer stepped away from the role, then I've got less of an issue with it. But since this is all rumor at the moment, the idea of bypassing an actress who did a spectacular job to get a sports figure to voice Sonya just rubs me the wrong way.

Now obviously, Sonya's voice hasn't been a constant. This isn't like Kieffer stepping into Big Boss. Still, though. If it's true and NetherRealm chose Rousey over Helfer, I'm not a fan that decision.

My feelings aside, the decision to include Rousey in some form makes some sense. The marketing potential is undeniable, particularly with NRS's relationship with the WWE. Even before WWE Immortals, I was well aware of the overlap between MK fans and wrestling fans. The combination of WB and the WWE could probably yield some excellent cross promotion for MK11.

Okay, I seem to be the only person who didn't like Helfer's performance.

I personally found her acting in MKX to be rather lackluster and plain. I'd rather a new actress came along.I'm not exactly thrilled abour Rousey (don't really care either way), but anything other than Helfer would be a delight for me.

Hmmm... well I'll add my two cents, as I feel I have a unique perspective regarding this bit.

I played the original Mortal Kombat on Sega Genesis when I was 3 years old... 1994. I watched Ronda Rousey fight before she was famous, in Strikeforce on Showtime, in the early 2010s.

While Rousey is somewhat of a black sheep in the martial-arts community (she got her arse kicked by Holly Holm, losing the UFC bantamweight championship in the process, looked downright foolish in doing so)... I like the idea of her voicing Sonya Blade. She's about as legit a martial-artist as you could have in this role (she beat Meisha Tate soundly twice! Both times by armbar.). I think she could do a great job. Voice acting, while it is an art form in itself, is not as demanding as, say, WWF work. I think, if she is indeed in the game, she'll probably do a good enough job. Let's not pretend great Mortal Kombat games need great voice acting - see Mortal Kombat Deception.
