Along with three new characters and an all-new story chapters: Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath will bring new fighting arenas to the battlefield of Mortal Kombat 11 free for all! Take a closer look at one of the klassic returning concepts: The Soul Chamber!

NetherRealm Studios released the official arena render embedded above via Twitter, giving us an overview of its newest version. It can also be seen in the background of an official hi-res screenshot showing a battle between Fujin and Shang Tsung.

This time the cavernous Soul Chamber appears to be located more specifically within a cathedral, surrounded by arcane artifacts and scriptures. Like past incarnations, it's identified by the large open maw of a head-like structure filled with the swirling green energy of tortured souls.

The Soul Chamber made its first appearance in Mortal Kombat 3 [pictured below], where it seemed to be part of Shao Kahn's Outworld tower. Upercutting an opponent through the ceiling would send them to The Balcony stage. The stage later returned in Mortal Kombat Gold, Armageddon, and revamped for the 2011 reboot.

Story & Voice Director Dominic Cianciolo had praise for the story-driven arena update in a PlayStation blog: "One other benefit of a new story? Our environment team got to build a bevy of new stages. They outdid themselves with fresh takes on the Klassic Dead Pool and Soul Chamber arenas, as well as a new stage that showcases the exterior of Kronika’s Keep."
