First of all, most of all of us remember MK1. Remember how MK1 was the 9th tournament and if Goro won it'd be 10th Kahn could invade earthrealm yada yada yada.
What if we could go back to the very first tournament. Where we had the likes of the original kung lao etc. That way they could of settled the offspring's Kung Lao (mk2) Shang needing souls to retain his youth.
To me it would be awesome to go to where the tournament actually started and play as the different characters who go through the ladder and have lost til we get to liu kang.
To me this would be a nice view into the past that way we could see how Edenia was captured as well as other realms.
This would be awesome as well so we could get real backstory on King Jerrod and Sindel before Kahn took her.
Explain the Shokan race having hatred for the Centaurs. How the Tarkata came about. Etc...
What do you think?

I don't think they should've rebooted back to then. But it'd be rather cool to see a prequel game takes place back then.
I hope once they finish up tying the MKX comic to the game they start doing more flashback issues to character's past. Including ones we already know their backstory of. It'd be nice to see it as more than just a blob of text.

I too would like a prequel, and I'd like to see the art direction go back to realism. Digitally scan actors like they do in sports games and make it really feel like the old MKs.
Something about the Unreal Engines plastic slimy glossy action figure look never sat well with me.

I would not want a pre-MK1 game because we all know how that story ends and it is kind of redundant to do the whole game to show how Kung Lao dies at Goro's hands in the end.
But I would not mind MK comics covering the origin story of the tournament, kind of what they are doing now in MKX. It will be sweet actually.

I like the idea, and the concept, but I'd prefer something like that to be saved for a Shaolin Monks type game, or comic.
The reason being, for me personally, I'm just so ready for this series to move forward.
MK Deception came out in 2004. This was the last unique, usual MK game, moving things forward, and introducing more characters and plots. This is now 10 and a half years ago.
MK Armageddon, Trilogy 2 in many ways, had some story progression, but as it turned out, it was very much a dead end forcing a reboot. It was not your regular MK game. Even still, that's 8 and a half years ago.
MK9 was a reboot, and a retelling of MK1-3 events.
My point being, I'm SO ready for moving the series forward and seeing what happens next. A prequel, would only mean we're seeing events we already know existed(to an extent), and then eventually catching up to the years we've already played.

True we know that OG Kung dies. And Liu is our present day OG Kung along a new timeline. But what gave Kahn Power to rise to Emperor? Who gave him that position. It's arcs of the story we don't full know about that I want to know more about. Something had to cause Kahn's greed for power and helped him devour the realms but who aided him in this balance of power he misueses?

*Should HAVE
But, oh well, there isn't much point in discussing this since you're about 5 years too late.
I'm satisfied where they rebooted it, the future of MK looks great!

I want that Scorpion and Sub-Zero adventure game so bad, it is long overdue. And I kinda think MKX are setting up a good platform for it storywise with whole Scorpion not being on Quan Chi's side anymore and tidbits from Sub-Zero trying to reclaim Lin Kuei and work for Raiden.
If they rebooted it back to the first tournament would not that make most of the characters in the game redundant? They would have to invent a lot of new characters as a result.
I think this would be better explored in a comic.

I'm still bitter we never got a real sequel to Deception... or Armageddon. Who had the idea to make MKTrilogy 2.0 a canon game? Total screw up.
But yeah, prequel would have to be a spinoff and not made by the fighting game dev team.

Yeah I have been hoping for something similar for a while, id like them to make a game that takes place around then with The Great Kung Lao, a young Tsung, and Goro.
It could do a time skip thing starting slightly before the first tournament, then jump to the first one and then sometime after.
Id love to have a game where we get to play as the Great Lao, a younger pre-champion Goro and a really young Tsung.

9 generation of chosen warriors, I bet some of them were insanely strong but were played dirty by Shan Tsung and his minions, was Raiden present in all of them?
I'm with u Minion. I want to know more! There is so much potential. I really hope that if the MKX comic continues to do well, DC will announce an entire MortaL Kombat Line of comix. One could be titled "Sekret Origins" and every issue would tell the origins of a character. How Kool was that KotaL Kahn origin story right? We could get that for EVERYONE. It would be like the "Villains Month" event DC had 2 yrs ago. I definitely want to see ShaoKahn. But more than anything, I wanna see that DBZ-Style fight between Raiden and Shinnok that wiped out the dinosaurs.
@Minion. What's funny is that about 13 years ago I actually wrote a FanFic for an MK adventure game. The Villain was Kronus, the God of Time. The story starts 20 years after MK4, and it had the SON of Johnny & Sonya, Collin Cage, as the hero. He would be bouncing around thru the timestream doing various missions in the rich history of the MKU. One of them would be helping the Great Kung Lao beat Shang Tsung in the 1st tournament. Now you can imagine my surge of emotions when MKX announced Cassie Cage! LoL

That's not a big to a lot of people though. There have been movie and games prequels before but people still watched and played them even though they likely knew the ultimate out come.
I do agree that would be a great comic book series too though.

Yeah, maybe as a side, non-fighting game at some point down the line, but right now I want to move forward. I want something new. We've had SO much revisiting of the past recently. And while we would learn new tidbits with a prequel, we still know how it ends. I just need something fresh and new. That's a huge reason why Im psyched for MKX.
