We've all been waiting for Midway/Netherealm studios to upload new footage of the MK Characters, but seriously when are they gonna talk more about the females? We already know that Kung Lao, Lui Kang, Sub Zero, Scorpion etc are gonna be in the game and their inevitable importance in the overall story.
However I uploaded an emergency episode of my show on youtube. putting AJ Glasser on Blast who is a GAMEPRO Magazine editor and NOT a Gamer. He wrote an awful review of princess Kitana. My video will speak for it'sself.

Well, the answer is pretty simple. MK is a male dominated game, and there's only a handful of female characters, and out of that handful only a few are truly well liked. I wouldn't expect to see too many female character reveals unfortunately. Pretty sure Sonya, Jade, and Sindel will be in, and with the addition of already confirmed Mileena and Kitana, I'm rather positive they'll be the only females playable in the game.

Yeah the roster makeup for MK9 sounds like it's going to consist primarily of MK1 - MK3 characters which leaves Mileena and Kitana (Confirmed), Sonya, Sheeva, and Jade. So out of the 26 slots mentioned by Boon, that's only 5 female characters.
Now they could always pool female fighters from later games in the series but, I'd wager those later game characters will be DLC rather than launch.
I hear you though, I'm still wanting Frost in the game. EDIT: Oh and Sindel...not sure how Iforgot her. So 6 out of 26.

Same here. I think Frost (and plenty of others from post-MK3 games) have a good chance of being DLC.

Great thread!
We surely need more female revelations and a LOT more MK promotion material featuring them. I'm so sick and bored of having the same repetitive male cast (Scorpion and Sub-Zero) being shoved down our throats, like, always, like, constantly, like, all the time, like, non-stop, like, you get the point so I'll stop saying "like" now.
It. Gets. Boring......FAST.
Anyway, Sonya (since always) and Mileena (now recently thanks to MKD) have been the poster girls of MK and the team has done well using them as the predominant female icons to promote a new MK game. However, I always feel like its not enough.
Sonya was pretty much the first character "confirmed" ages ago when those "WB Trademark" sheets were revealed in the web in November 1st, and then when her voice actress confirmed her to be in MK2011 in February.
I was extremely pleased with how they handled Sonya as a "promotional" character in the past games, specially in MKvsDC (which is her best, no doubt), and I was also very happy with all the attention they gave to Mileena in MKD (her best game as well). This time around, however, I feel like they really are not taking the time to give the females a little more screen time.
Sure, Mileena got her good amount of time when this game was first revealed at E3, but aside from that and the cool "Fatality booth picture" thing, Scorpion and Sub-Zero have once being shoved down our throats in almost everything else.
I think the females deserve just as much "screen" time as the male characters. This doesn't mean to simply to be "revealed and playable" for the public, these means that I expect them to use them for awesome promotional material IN and OUTSIDE the game such as: billboards, cards, special editions, collectors editions, action figures, posters, game menus, concept art, videos, magazine covers, etc. Sonya's been the luckiest one because in the past, during the classic games, there was tons of stuff going on that featured her in things such as game cards, cloth, comics, posters, magazine covers, reviews, game boxes, toys, etc, and she got that back in MKvsDC.
I hope they treat the females better within the next 6 months, and that next time that they have a cool idea for a poster or a concept art that's going to be used for game promotion, I rather hope to see something amazing featuring Sonya or Sindel or Kitana or Mileena or Jade or any female (or all of them!) and not another one of the guys or boring ninjas.
No, its not.
Its nice to hear what your thoughts on the matter. On the other side, don't you think you were a bit harsh? To be fair, Kitana wasn't exactly the most polished of the whole cast at PAX, and they did write one or two positive things about her character. I don't think they were biased. Also, there have been plenty of incredibly positive reviews for Mileena (another female), and the same happened for Sonya during her promotion in MKvsDC.

Fighting games always have more male characters than female characters.
I think we'll be seeing all six MK-UMK3 girls in this game even if people don't think Sheeva will make it. Although I suppose she is the most likely to not be included if one is left out.

Dead or Alive is an exception.
Concerning the girls of MK, I think this is a tough nut to crack. The first game only had ONE playable female character. Likewise, MK2 only had one actress fulfill the roles of both Kitana and Mileena. It wasn't until later that the ladies of MK started a veritable uprising, enough so that Kitana's ending has her making an "all female fighting force" (ugh...).
I have almost NO doubts in my mind that Sonya, Sindel, and Jade will show up. Sheeva, I hope, makes the cut, but it depends on how much the team wants to model and animated four-armed creatures.
Storywise though, there's no reason several others can't be in the game. While some characters, like Kira and Frost, wouldn't make much sense, it's far easier to squeeze in many others.
Tanya - She could EASILY be in the game. She's an Edenian, thousands of years old. We know she's evil NOW, but during this point of the story we'd have no idea. Even "evil", she may still want freedom from Shao Kahn and fight alongside Kitana and Jade, or she and Jade's rivalry could be touched on and developed. No reason not to include her.
Sareena - She's a very important character to both Sub-Zeros and has ties to Quan Chi. It was revealed that after her "death", she roamed the Netherrealm until she got strong enough to retain her human form and escape. It would be fun to see her, and maybe her hitherto unseen demon form, during that interval time before she escaped.
Ashrah - Just like Sareena, she's a demon, so age is not an issue. She was running around slaying demons back during the earliest parts of the franchise, long after she left Quan Chi's service, so there's no hurdles for her to jump through.
Nitara - Again, age isn't an issue for her. She had apparently fought to separate her realm from Outworld for years, so her goals would easily align with many characters from the earlier games. Her moral ambiguity lets her be flexible as well, so she's not locked into any given struggle.
Li Mei - She looks young, but she's an Outworlder, like Bo' Rai Cho, so she could be very old. Her story began when the Deadly Alliance forced her people to built Shang Tsung's palace, but her people had been enslaved and abused long before that.
Khameleon - While her chances of being in the game are slim at best, all MK fans agree her story is actually pretty darn good, especially since she provides some outer conflict, substance, and depth for the otherwise mindless drone that is Reptile. She does exist, and her existence can and should be a source of conflict for Reptile between serving his masters or risking everything to save his otherwise dead race. I'd like a cameo at least.

Just wanna point out that this is wrong.
Blazblue : 9 Male, 10 Female
Arcana Heart: 0 Male, 23 Female
and actually Dead or Alive has more males than females. I think its something like 12/9
Mortal Kombat just doesn't have very many interesting female characters. The male characters are just generally better; it's unfortunate to say, but true in my opinion. The females that are actually interesting were created too late in the series to be in this game, so instead of interesting characters like Nitara, Frost or Li Mei we'll look at Sheeva instead.

Well technically 8 male, 10 female, and 1 unknown.
I doubt Arakune has any of his reproductive organs anymore XD

Li Mei? Come on that joke character isn't worth mentioning, she is horrible in looks and in moves/fatalities/story everything.
I rather see Jade, Kitana, Mileena, Sindel and Sonya blade.

How the hell is Li Mei a "joke" character? Just because you don't like her doesn't change the fact that she's one of the best female characters.

About Me

"Fuck that" doesn't answer the question of how Li Mei is a joke character. A joke character, for example, is something that was placed in attract mode as a play on the title of a pop song.

It's sad that we only get 5 different female characters. DLC is going to be this games savior. Sareena is going to have to be a definite.

Sincubus calls any character he doesn't like a "joke".
You see, his favorite character is Rain. Who most people call a joke because he's named after a song and has only been in the "all-in" games. So it's sort of a childish "NO U!" reflex he has.

Just as long as they look bucket naked, they will always serve meaning to Mortal Kombat, and fatalities included so whats the debate about???
