Anybody who says the Playstation D-pad is great for fighters has never held a Saturn controller. Hell, or even a Super Nintendo controller.

The Playstation D-pad, while better than the 360's, still leaves much to be desired.

I have played MK2 on the SNES. The D-Pad is nice for it. However, nobody is making fighters for the SNES anymore. Of the three systems available now, the PS3's pad is far and away the best one for fighters.

SNES D-pad sure was superb. Nintendo 64 used the same D-pad. I haven't played PS3 but I've heard that PS3 controller would the best for fighters and Xbox 360 controller would the best for shooting games. I'll just have to wait and see how will the new improved D-pad Xbox 360 controller turn out on Mortal Kombat.

360 D-pad is a monstrosity.

Shame. Such a comfortable controller for most games but butchers fighters.

There's a new 360 controller coming out with an improved D-pad. Still not as good as PS3 apparently. The buttons are greyed out which doesn't look as good and only comes with play & charge.

I have play and charge and it's shit! It only charges when it wants. Which is surprising since it costs a bit of money as opposed to the PS3 controller which just needs a cheap USB to charge it but it works better.

Nintendo is comprised of three Japanese words. Nin, Ten, Dou, and when combined it means we kicked the holy shit outta Atari.

Well, technically I'd say the Wii's classic controller is the best current first party pad for fighters. But ignoring that and just going by PS3 and 360, yes, the PS3 wins out if we're not talking third party controllers like the Mad Catz Fight Pad. But I think it's still a "less bad" than an actual "good." It's tolerable.

I wouldn't bother. It's still apparently not better than the Mad Catz Fight Pad which you can get for less than half the cost.

I had actually forgotten about the Wii's classic controller, mainly because I've only used it once (for GoldenEye).

You must be talking about the Jan. Issue. The Feb. issue is the one with Elder Scrolls V on the cover and of also contains the section on MK with jade and Goro.

They're all 8 way sticks. They can hit 8 different directions. Unless you're talking something like Pac-Man which has a stick that is actually 4 way in that it can't hit the diagonals but that would be useless for fighters.

What I think you're asking is what the best restrictor gate is. Pac-Man uses a 4 way restrictor gate that's more of a plus sign shape cutting out the diagonals completely. But for fighters there's really only three options: square, octagon, or perfect circle.

If you want to use American sticks, the answer is simple. They're all circle. They don't actually use restrictor gates. You won't feel any corners or diagonals as you spin the stick.

Japanese sticks can vary. Most of them use square gates by default but can be swapped out for other shapes. It's really personal preference. I tend to like the square gate on Japanese sticks because I'm a Guile/Bison player in Street Fighter and I like being able to easily find the down/back diagonal since charging from that position is a key part of their game. It's much easier to find diagonals on square gates than any other shape. But a Zangief player having to do lots of 360s probably would prefer something rounder to speed things up.

For MK's tap tap motions? I'd say anything would probably work just fine. One of the benefits of simple inputs.

Sonya's projectile looks a lot like her UMK3 ring toss. And it seems like, she can shoot more than one ring in a short period of time.

That's glorious news! But, how can you tell by that picture? Did the magazine mention a deeper description of her rings projectile or is it mostly your assumption?

I think they look a lot more similar to her MKvsDC Rings with only a few minor updates. The rings look more magical and the explosion after they collide with the victim looks more dramatic and whirlwind like than the MKvsDC rings, but still similar.

I'd live it if they were exactly the same to her MK3 rings though, those were absolutely amazing. The little rain energy drops were superb.

It was mostly just my assumption. Judging from the picture, it looked like she had shot one that exploded and then shot another one right after. And I forgot about those rain energy drops! I miss those! It's sad it doesn't look like they're bringing that back.

I agree.

Those freaking rain drops of energy are spectacular! They looked so awesome in MK3 and combined with the sound effect of her rings they were perfection.

But, yeah, you are right, she seems to be shooting 2 (pro-move?) energy rings. Awesome.

PS: Still very sad about the rings. I also loved the glow she had all over her body before she shot them in MK3.
