You can check out "Gamespot's analysis of the new trailer. Nothing really new, but a fun read, and there are decent quality clips if you want to add to the current pic collection already available. Though I find it strange that they recognize Reptile immediately, yet they have no idea who Nightwolf is fighting in the next pic.

Also, despite that I consider Gamespot to be the lesser evil next to IGN, they had this to say about the new studio:

but the development team behind the game has a new name: NetherRealm Studios. A reference to the home of Mortal Kombat series antagonist Shao Kahn.

You FAIL gamespot.

Game testers, reviewers which seem to dont even know the backgrounds of the games or even ..relative popular characters like Nightwolf?

goddamn fire idiots like that.

i never visit gamespot or other big site slike ign since years now thanks to blogs like kotaku, this site and a few other sites dedicated to only specific gameseries....are the big sites becoming more and more shallow as the most games today?

They did point out one of the cooler effects nobody here has mentioned yet. The way Subby freezes himself then disintegrates on the wind when he tags out.

I hope they really go full bore on giving every single character their own unique beginning of round 2 wake-up animations, win poses, tag outs, etc. Too many characters got generic ones in the last few games.

I agree whole heartedly, Razor. They seem to have the time to put in to this game and really do it correctly and I think that part of that is giving characters as much individuality as possible. Lots of special moves and everything that you said with regard to win poses, round 2 wake ups, etc. It also looks like we're going to see MvC style "jump in/special/jump out" moves, which would obviously be signature as well.

Very cool.

Thanks for posting this Temp!

Some other observations:

Characters that look incredibly boring: Shao Khan, Rayden, Kung Lao, Cage and Mileena: Honestly, they look so similar to previous costumes in the game.

One thing that I've really enjoyed about upcoming MK games is the new interpretations of old characters. They took absolutely NO chances here whatsoever.

Characters that look solid: Nightwolf and Sub Zero: These guys also look similar to their old interpretations, but they also seem to be refined to the point of perfection. In other words, I don't think these characters have ever looked this cool before.

Characters that I really dig the looks of: Sektor and Reptile: Wow, some subtle changes to Sektor and he looks a thousand times better. I never really wanted to see him again but he looks really cool here. Reptile looks like the perfect compromise between past and present. I like this even more than his MK:SM look.

Overall, not a whole lot of chances taken with looks of teh characters. A bit disappointing (okay, very disappointing) but hopefully we'll see alt costumes (please more than 1! Many fighters now have 5+ costumes per character) or heck, maybe even the ability to make costumes for your characters. If Soul Calibur, Tekken and VF can do that, why not MK?

The arenas are fantastic and easily the coolest part of the video for me.

What looks like the reinterpretation of Shang Tsung's throne room is phenomenal. I could have every single fight in that arena alone. It's dark and I love the rain outside, yet it still has an asian feel to it and a majestic feel thanks to the use of red and gold. Fantastic job here!

Khan's Arena, The Pit II, The Living Forest and the Dead Pool all look like solid updates of the originals with a great level of detail to them. I still wonder why the characters look so medicore in comparison, but I'm hoping that gets ironed out.

The return of city street levels from MK3. Boo. Not a fan of in any way, shape or form. I can't stress enough how much I hate that they're including this awful motif in this game. Zero desire to play these levels.

So yeah, the levels are shaping up well, the characters are looking okay, even if they're playing it safe with the looks thus far, now I just hope that we can see something new at E3 like new characters, a new storyline... Something that hopefully proves that this isn't just the old MK games reimagined or rebooted or whatever. Forward progress, that's what I'm looking for overall.

Wow, that's pretty sad.
Next thing we get is a Street Fighter fanboy at gamespot writing the review for MK9...

I 100% agree with you on the first part!!

I was so disappointed to see the classic characters looking exactly like they have looked before. Don't get me wrong, I ADORE the classic outfits and looks, BUT, like Baraka407 said, one thing that always got me excited was the intriguing nervous wait of seeing my fave characters with their updated and awesome new looks. I was never disappointed. I was always happy to see Sonya in different styles and always updated, Mileena in MKD blew everyone away, Raiden's Alt in MKDA is still a fan favorite, etc etc etc.

It is still very early, so, I'm seriously hoping for some major improvements and updates. I want to play with characters that feel new, fresh, and unique. I don't want to feel like I'm playing MKA, MKSM, or MKD all over again...with better graphics.

@ Baraka407 (again): But I disagree with your point regarding Sub-Zero. If anything, he looks even more boring, stale, and predictable than Johnny Cace and Mileena. At least the last 2 got a few new updates and we didn't seen them in the last game, but that Sub-Zero is almost a copy/paste. I certainly hope/believe that its just a placeholder because its still early, but, so far, he is one of the most boring ones.

Nightwolf does look slightly new, so, he is OK.

@ Queve, while I agree Sub-Zero looks rather boring, he isn't as much of a copy and paste as it might seem at a glance. The only thing he shares with his MKvsDC design is his mask, either because it is place holder, or because they simply liked the look of it. Hopefully it is placeholder, since i'm not a fan of it.

I see. I personally loved that mask, but, we've seen it before. It's a really cool look, but its an old used one. I wouldn't mind so much if the overall costume looked new, but it really doesn't.

I was (and still am) hoping for some bold and unique attempts in costumes. I want characters to look fresh, new, unique, and different.

MKD Sub-Zero (his primary outfit) is one of the best examples of why new looks and some change is good.

MK4 Reptile and MKSM Reptile were absolutely brilliant.

Sonya has always had this to her advantdge, always looking fresh and new: MK1, MK3, MK4, MKDA, MKSM, MKvsDC, etc. I'm hoping she keeps her MKvsDC bangs/hairstyle, but she can be without the beret or with a MK4 cap, for example.

Mileena in MKD is another perfect example.

And so on.

There's always alternate costumes...

If Mileena's first costume is her classic, it's safe to say her 2nd will likely be something compeltely different, such as maybe her MK:D outfit. Rarely ever do they just give you their classic outfit and nothing for a 2nd, besides MKvsDC, and I think that had to do with other reasons than just because they didn't want to. They have plenty of extra time this go around, and they aren't trying to start using and building a whole new engine to use. So just relax. : p Just a random thing I want though, is I would love to see Sonya in an MK4 type uniform. I really dig the army hat that she wore in the MK1 movie, and I think she should get an outfit like that. One that's strictly 100% serious business. Her MKvsDC one was good, but the fact that she had no bra on and a halfcut shirt w/ unrealistic extra DOA style bouncy boobs kinda killed her serious appeal. 1 outfit should be serious, the other can be a little more laid back.

Nobody asked for "fresh and new costumes" when we saw the first Shaolin Monks footage, did they? Because I don't remember anyone doing that so the fact that it's happening for THIS remake all of a sudden is a little weird.

I completely agree though, I'm still hopeful that we'll see some new costumes for the characters. I found the costumes for Johnny Cage and Kung Lao too stale and unrefreshing. Mileena looks a little bit better, in my opinion, the same with Nightwolf.

As a huge Reptile fan, I can say i'm extremely happy with his new design. He has a great streamlined look that I think fits his character perfectly. I especially like the muted green coloration of his skin, rather than the vibrant greens of the older games.

Thanks for posting this, bro.
I do agree that it's disappointing to see most characters in costumes similar to old ones. I do hope they get updated and given some new outfits. Reptile, Sektor and Nightwolf look great in their new attire. I hope they too have something even more striking for alternate outfits. Overall, I hope the characters look a lot more real by the time the game comes out.
I am impressed by all of the stages so far. They all seem to be mostly updated MK2 arenas with the Street from MK3 and Shangs Throne Room form MK1 thrown in. The lighting on most, especiall the Pit is brilliant. I have a feeling this game is going to be very atmospheric. If they had new versions of the original music or even the original music from these backgrounds, I think that would make them perfect.
